<div>The idea for The Weighted Cape came from a quiet moment at home. After buying a weighted blanket for my wife, I tried it myself and immediately felt the calming effects. That’s when the lightbulb went off: What if I could bring that same comfort into my barbershop? So I transformed a traditional cutting cape into a weighted version, initially just to add comfort for my clients.

But with the right tools and approach, that can change.

<div>Since then, I’ve become a Sensory Safe Certified barber, specializing in working with children on the spectrum. I’ve created a space where kids feel safe to just be themselves, and where parents no longer have to dread haircut day. I service about 60 kids a month and it is easily the most fulfilling thing I’ve done in my 10 year career. To see parents feel like weights have been lifted off their shoulders and not having to apologize and the kids slowly building that trust and haircut tolerance, the experience has been truly invaluable.

Help Expand Our Sensory Haircut Services Globally

<div>In the early morning hours of Tuesday, May 5, Grace Thompson faced every cat rescuer’s worst nightmare when her home—also the foster headquarters for her 501(c)(3) rescue, Kitten Kam Rescue—caught fire. She acted quickly, doing everything she could to save the cats and kittens in her care, but tragically, many were lost to smoke inhalation. Some of her personal cats survived, along with several adult rescue cats and kittens. As of Tuesday afternoon, one cat is still unaccounted for.

<div>The fire destroyed everything Grace owned—her clothing, furniture, personal belongings, and cherished memories. She is now faced with the overwhelming reality of starting over from nothing.

ALLEGORY Solo Show and Community Events

<div>Hello everyone, I am Abdul’s older sister Safrat Wague and on 11/13/22 Abdul was at work when he tried to break up a fight. During which he sustained a severe head injury. This resulted in a blood clot that caused a stroke to the left side of his brain. The left side of the brain controls the right side of the body. Abdul currently is experience right side paralysis. The next 7 days of observation and treatment will be critical. Only time will tell how extensive the damage is. Nonetheless it will be a long road to recovery. We have faith and know Abdul is resilient and that he will overcome this injury. All the help we can get during this time will be deeply appreciated. Abdul does not have insurance at this time and we will use donations to help with medical costs and aftercare for him. My family and I will help manage his affairs until he is able to .

Abdul’s Medical Bills

<div>On Wednesday 7/27, my partner Jamal was diagnosed with cancer. He has stage 3 Hodgkin’s Lymphoma. He is one infusion down in a projected 6-month-long chemotherapy treatment. The doctor has assured us his prognosis is promising, but as is to be expected, we are still having a hard time coping with our new reality and the uncertainty ahead.

<div>To make matters worse, Jamal abruptly lost his job last month due to restructuring at the organization he’d worked at for the past several years. Paying our rent and various other bills will become increasingly difficult as Jamal has to re-focus his energy from the job hunt to fighting Hodgkin’s Lymphoma. We also do not know how much in medical costs we will be expected to contribute as his treatment continues.

<div>Jamal and I decided to enter into a domestic partnership, which will make me eligible to take paid family leave so I can care for him. However, that is only going to afford me a fraction of my pay, and will not be enough to pay all of our mounting bills.

<div>When I’m at work, or otherwise occupied, I won’t be able to cook his meals, and he will likely need to have food and groceries delivered to the home. Another major expense we are anticipating is transportation. As the chemotherapy takes its toll on Jamal’s body, he won’t be able to walk to his various appointments as we normally would. The chemotherapy will also leave Jamal immunocompromised, so we’ll have to be extra vigilant in Jamal’s exposure to the elements and other people.

<div>Because chemotherapy can cause temporary or permanent infertility, we want to preserve his fertility through sperm banking. We have already had to pay out of pocket for this service as it needed to be accomplished before chemotherapy began.

<div>Jamal and I both need to get back into therapy and seek support groups through his treatment. While there are many no-cost cancer patient and caregiver support groups available on-line, therapy expenses will be out-of-pocket.

<br /><br />On Friday morning, May 20th, our grandson,Tré, and his mom escaped from a fire at their apartment complex with only the literal clothes on their backs. Sadly, they lost all of their belongings and now find themselves needing to rebuild their household. <br />We are so obviously very grateful for their safety and well-being, but are setting up this fund to assist them in their efforts to begin again.<br />Any donations, large or small,  are welcomed and appreciated by our family. <br />God is good every day and we thank him for his protection and we thank you for your help. <br /><br />God bless you all as we thank you in advance.

House Fire lost everything!

<div>On Sunday, March 27th, 2022 my uncle became one of the countless victims of gun violence in the city of Chicago. My uncle was a hard worker who was about to start his shift at his second job at a restaurant only blocks away from Wrigley Field, where he was struck with 3 gunshot wounds to his chest and armpit area. He was transported by the Chicago Fire Department to Illinois Masonic Medical Center in critical condition where he shortly died as he succumb to his injuries. Detectives are now investigating and there are no suspects in custody as of yet. He was a husband, father, and provider for his family.

Fundraiser for Wife & Daughters of Hermilo Beltran

<div>Simi Estiatorio was a beautiful restaurant to anyone who walked in, held up on false promises and one too many lies. I was their Private Event Coordinator and a floor manager. During SXSW Simi ran short-staffed with an average of 3 servers, 1 bartender, and 1 manager every night. Everyone on staff worked very hard for the team's sake and the reward of a hefty paycheck. Our staff was exhausted; with SXSW in the rearview, to give everyone a break management decided to revert to our old schedule and close Sunday &amp; Monday (03/20 &amp; 03/21). During this time, the "restaurant owner" George Theodosiou was fully MIA. No one had seen him aside from his quick visit to dine in the main dining room Saturday night, 03/19. On Wednesday, 03/23 it was confirmed he skipped town and would not be returning. Along with this news, we learned that we were now being evicted by our own own investors property management company, ECR. Simi Management was able to retrieve paychecks from the Accountant, we reached out to staff to let them know we would not be open anymore and to come pick up their final check. Very quickly the news started rolling in that the account had insufficient funds, only 5 employees have been able to receive funds from their checks. Half of our employees have been unable to retrieve their paychecks because the property management company says they know for a fact there are no funds in the account, while this is true I still think they have the right to those checks. Yesterday 03/24 one of the servers attempted to cash their check, only to be notified that the account had been closed. None of the kitchen staff has been paid, majority of front of house has not been paid. This is not fair for my team, with rent and other bills coming due soon. They are struggling to find quick employment to supplement their unexpected losses. I understand that Mr. Theodosiou should be held responsible and we should sue, but after speaking with several lawyers, they have confirmed that because Simi was an LLC (limited liability company) owned by George, no legal action would resolve payroll recovery. The accountant disclosed the necessary amount to cover payroll and that reflects our goal amount. If you are able to donate please do, any donation big or small would be greatly appreciated by my team, they would be so gracious. Thank you! **UPDATE** We are floored with the amount of donations we have received, because we are unsure that we will complete our goal I want to assure everyone that I am working with an accountant to evenly allocate funds to everyone owed based on the payroll. Accountability in Action - Justice for Wyche

This fundraiser has been established for the family of a longtime friend of mine, Julie and was made with permission from them.<br /><br />Julie’s father Tom was diagnosed with bile duct cancer last fall. The news devastated their family, and the following months have mostly presented them with setbacks and challenges. This summer, in particular, has been tough for Tom as he grows weaker from his treatments, his disease, and its complications.<br /><br />Then, life decided to be cruel to him - unrelated to any other ailments, Tom fell while in the shower and fractured his lower spine at the end of July. He will need to wear an upper body brace for about 3 months, or until his back heals. The logistics of wearing the brace and following his restrictions require him to have regular assistance. Julie has been staying with her parents and providing that assistance, but a plan needed to be made for when she went back to work as a teacher in the fall.<br /><br />Then about a week ago, Julie went to see a neurologist about migraine like symptoms she was experiencing. After a week of scans and appointments she learned she has benign brain tumor beginning to build pressure in her head. She was instructed to have the tumor removed soon and is scheduled to have surgery at the end of this week.<br /><br />Within this same time span, Julie's mom Kathy broke her arm and Julie's brother Jeff ended up in the ER with a nasty infection on his leg that he is still recovering from. Their family has been under lot of sudden stress, and are headed for some difficult times ahead.<br /><br />Now both Tom and Julie will require care as they recover. After considering their possible options, Kathy will need to take a leave of absence from her job for a couple months to care for her family. Everything he does, he does for other people and only to help because he has a massive heart!

<p>Most of you know Walker as a core member of Chelsea Chicago and the man who helps with dozens of the flag designs you have in your pubs both in America and at Stamford Bridge. He's a key member of the Chelsea community here and abroad.
</p>

<p>More importantly, Walker is a beautiful human being who loves his friends, enjoys his music, a great father to his dog Kuma, and someone who will always have your back no matter what.
</p>

<p>I know that all of us will step up and help him in his time of need. He's a proud individual who won't ask for help, and we won't make him - let's help our brother like I know we can!

Help Chelsea Chicago's Walker Rice!

Throughout her life, Lauren has suffered from numerous medical conditions, which often went unaddressed and ignored. One particularly challenging battle is her battle with scleroderma, an autoimmune disorder that affects the muscles, bones, and connective tissues of the body. After years of quietly suffering, Lauren has finally begun to receive the medical attention she needs. She’s learned that she is also suffering from two other conditions, Fibromyalgia and Sjogren's Disease. <br /><br /><br />The debilitating nature of her diseases has put her out of work and she has just lost her home as a result.  With numerous trips to the ER, hospital stays, doctors appointments and expensive medication, Lauren has acquired a huge financial burden she cannot afford. Despite the numerous hurdles she has been through, Lauren remains optimistic.   I ask you to donate whatever you can spare to help this brilliant, talented and compassionate young lady get back on the road to recovery!<br /><br /><br /><br />A note from Lauren:<br /><br /><br /><br />I've always been one to fight for others. I never learned to do the same for myself.<br /><br />This is largely what brought me to this Spring: after years of my pain being dismissed by doctors and others I trusted, I began to quietly waste away. It began in early 2017 in my stomach; a growing inability to digest food of any kind. Summer 2017 the pain in my stomach often became crippling, spreading throughout the trunk of my body and beginning to limit my activity. A fall down my apartment stairs in October bruised my spine and damaged my muscles; doctors said it was essential to keep moving through the pain in order to heal. I did that, unknowing at the time that I had neurological damage from scleroderma and oncoming fibromyalgia that would cause my body to be unable to heal from this, and that damage would only worsen with movement. So would the extreme and continual pain, now spread through my entire body.<br /><br />I stopped working in January, picking up a few hours nannying to chip away at the growing pile of bills, and trying with all I had to “keep moving” as I watched my muscles and bodily functions slowly disappear. First rapid weight loss; then, over a few months, my hands lost strength and ability, coming with muscle spasms much of the day that rendered them useless; over these months, I would lose muscle endurance, spending most of the day in bed, unable to get the physical strength to move around. The pain was unreal, now filling my entire body with insane sensations. It began to feel like I was pressing against barbed wire with every movement, a sensation I still endure.<br /><br />One day late April, my body gave up. I had a lung infection it couldn't fight off which spread to my heart, sending my body into a frenzy of extreme pain. It was too much for my weakened system to handle, and in an instant I lost the ability to walk or even hold up my own weight. <br /><br />I feel blessed beyond belief that I had friends who stepped in and fought for me.<br /><br />Late nights in the ED, then admission to the hospital at the U where I was given diagnoses of Sjögren's syndrome and Fibromylagia, and where specialists would soon connect much of my pain and dysfunction with the linear scleroderma on the left side of my face, head, and neck. Through a very difficult time in a rehab center, I learned to walk and use my hands again, which brings us to today.<br /><br />I need help. I need to pay medical bills, unaddressed from months of not working and now blocking my access to certain specialists. This will only grow as I continue to seek treatment at the U, and to fight for a better future - with physical, medical, and psychological therapies as I seek to repair as much damage as possible from all this. Dealing with my mental health will also be an extremely important part of this - my anxiety, particularly around medical issues and asking others for help, is now unbearable and carries with it intense depression. My system cannot handle stress, and therapy will be key to building a healthy future.<br /><br />That's where YOU come in.<br /><br />Just your awareness makes a difference - these things could go unaddressed with doctors for so many years in part because there's so little awareness even in the medical community about these diseases and how to treat them.<br /><br />Money is unfortunately critical, and anything helps. <br /><br />But what else can help is unique to you - do you know of a specialist or therapist you'd recommend for my conditions?(trying to stay Fairview as much as possible to keep access at the U) Maybe a program or other method worth trying?<br /><br />Is your house a place I could stay during a part of this journey?<br /><br />Would you be available as a temporary home for my animals during these transitions? (Sammie the shi-poo and Jax the cat, both incredibly loving and sweet. Ideally, Sammie will stay with me where I go, but having people on hand for potential hospital stays is critical. Help Lauren Heal

As some of you may know my husband, Joey passed away on Sunday. If you knew him, you knew how great of a guy he really was. He meant the world to me and so much to many others. I still can’t believe he’s no longer with us. His spirit and personality were infectious. He could make me smile and laugh even on the worst of my days. My life will never be the same without him. <br /><br />We’re accepting donations to help out with the memorial. We would appreciate any little bit you may be willing to give.

Charles Shinnick’s Memorial

David Holman was in a serious bicycle accident last night. He is in ICU Please pray that his head injury will be diagnosed and treated effectively.<br /><br />We are setting up a fund to cover David's medical exspenses. When he begins recovery his only focus needs to be recovery.
