<div>Then, my grandson Art had four (4) extended hospital stays between July and September.

<div>This year has not been easy. The first week of January, Art was placed on a ventilator for 2 weeks after a virus attacked his body. Within 24 hours, he was septic, his lungs collapsed, and he tore the lining of his belly, causing him to vomit blood.

<div>The toll of Art's frequent hospitalizations this year has made work nearly impossible. Compounded by the current administration's defunding of academia and non-profits this year, my family and I have been living, but barely paying our bills.
</div>
<div><br />
</div>
<div><strong>That said, we have an urgent need.</strong>

</div>
<div>This morning, while preparing to speak at the Adult Industry Forum in Berlin, where I am presenting the film Olivia tomorrow, I discovered that my landlord is trying to evict my non-binary daughter from our apartment.
</div>
<div><br />
</div>
<div>We have been in housing court with my landlord for over two years, after he withheld rent when an unmanaged leak caused our power to go out. Despite paying $23,800 in July 2024, this year set us back tremendously, causing us to break our stipulation agreement. According to the court, because my 28-year-old did not sign the stipulation, and did not respond to the original 2023 court filing on their own, the landlord can separate them from our housing case to evict them separately in civil court, regardless of our waiting for the current trial court judge to set a new court date.

<div>When my daughter went to court this afternoon, they discovered that the landlord had received a judgment, without our knowledge, back in March 2025, after the trial judge had adjourned our February return date.
</div>
<div><br />
</div>
<div>My daughter lives with ADHD and depression. I'm currently helping them navigate filing a response, from a distance, along with supporting their mental health. I'm planning to fly home early from my trip, rather than staying in Berlin for the duration of the conference, festival, and planned writing time to complete the homework from the agent that will help flesh out my book.
</div>

<div>If you've ever dealt with bureaucracy, shitty ass landlords, and rude government workers, you know how angry and helpless I was to hear my child on the other end of the phone having a panic attack because the clerk kept interrupting them, ignoring their questions, and was unreasonably rude to them as they were trying to ask questions.
</div>
<div><br />
</div>
<div>Tomorrow, they go back to court to file an Order to Show Cause. They will get a 5-day temporary stay.
</div>
<div><br />
</div>
<div>And so, here is the ask:

<div>I need to raise $13,837.36 within 5 days to satisfy the judgment.
</div>
<div><br />
</div>
<div>Then, I will need to raise an additional $23,294 to clear the balance by November.
</div>

<div>I know it's a lot.

<div>I know everyone is struggling.
</div>

<div>Often, I have avoided asking for support because my experience has been that people will support my labor but not my survival.

<div>Tobin Costen unexpectedly passed away on December 2 leaving behind his wife Adina and their children Kasandra and Theo. The family is shocked and saddened by this loss and unfortunately not financially prepared as this was unexpected. If you knew Tobin, you’d know how much he touched the lives of everyone around him. Tobin was always the first to help anyone either with helping one in need or making you laugh until you cried. His enormous presence and contagious smile will be missed by many. We are raising money to assist with memorial costs as well as unforeseen financial difficulties as the family deals with this loss.

<p>In years past, Oakland Tech has been able to pay AP test fees for kids who take the exams at the end of their school year. In 2018, due to severe midyear budget cuts initiated by OUSD, there's no money left to cover AP fees, which are $94 per kid, per test.</p>
<p>For some Tech families, that's not a hardship. For many, many more families at Tech, that's a significant burden, especially if their kids are taking &gt;1 AP. This may result in students who have taken AP classes all year long opting NOT to take the exam - thereby losing the chance for college credits or to prove that they're capable of college level work.<br /><br />This is where income inequality leads to opportunity inequality. And the Oakland Tech community is better than that.<br /><br />I've learned from the Tech administration that we need to raise $7000 to cover AP testing fees for all students in AP classes this year (minus a modest $10/test contribution that they'd like students to pay, to have  some skin in the game.) **Edited 3/21 by Nancy - Ms. Taylor has explained the exact $ amount that kids will pay is being reviewed after the outpouring of donations so this may change. We have also upped our goal to $20k so that we can cover all test for the neediest families, even if the kids take &gt;1 AP.** **Edited 3/22 by Nancy - let's up the goal to $25k and see how many more kids/tests we can cover!**<br /><br />If you'd like to be part of making AP exam testing affordable for our students in 2018, please contribute what you can, and please spread the word. From my daughter...<br />Hi! My name is April Bryant and I am 31 years old. I have cerebral palsy. In spite of the severity of my disability, I’ve graduated from UC Berkeley with a degree in African American Studies. Having overcome many challenges in my life in addition to my disability, I feel I am in a unique position to help others reach their potential.  My goal in life is to become a counselor for disadvantaged youth.  In order to do this, I will be getting my Masters degree in counseling. Getting an education was a life-time goal however, being the godmother to three beautiful children is one of the most important things in my life.  <br /><br />Many people have been supportive of me in pursuing my dreams and I want to be able to give back to others.  One way I have been doing this is volunteering at Girls, Inc. where I tutor young at-risk girls in literacy skills.   I also work at a school for children with disabilities in Hillsborough, CA implementing a self-determination curriculum and mentoring these young children toward independence.  <br /><br />It is important to me to live a full, active live, so I engage in as many activities with others as possible.  I am an athlete in power soccer which engages my competitive nature. I am very adventurous and have gone skiing, zip lining, and kayaking. <br /><br />Being independent is a critical part of my life and I've worked very hard to reach my current situation. <br /><br />However, I am at a time in my life where I am having challenges meeting and accomplishing my goals due the fact that I don’t have a wheelchair accessible van. While public transportation is available at times, it does not allow me the flexibility I need to meet the demands of my commitments. In order to get to Hillsborough, I have to borrow someone else’s wheelchair van, which isn’t easy. I have to get up at 5am, leave by 6am to go to Oakland to get the van, and then get through traffic to make sure I’m on time to work. If the weather permits, I can get to Girls, Inc, but when it rains, I have no way getting there. My power wheelchair and communication device are not waterproof!  Spending time with my godchildren is difficult without a steady means of transportation.  The fact I can’t spend time with my godkids and attend their sporting events really aches my soul. With an accessible van, I’d able to see them as often as I want. My godkids are my life, and I should be able to support them regardless of my disability. <br /><br />By having an accessible van, it will be easier to continue my education, fulfill the requirements of my jobs and volunteer efforts, spend more time with my family and more readily get to my medical appointments.    <br /><br />Asking for help has never been my strong suit, but I'm at a point in my life where I’ve exhausted all other options and am asking for your help.
