Along with many other efforts across these hard weeks, we rescued a family of eight Spanish fighting bulls and cows — including two calves — from a route to the slaughterhouse, their pastures failed by the drought. The youngest, baby Tormenta, arrived in very bad shape: badly malnourished and sick with diarrhea. With round-the-clock special care, she is now far more stable and slowly finding her strength. And this week we reached Athenea — a mother cow so emaciated she was at real risk of dying — and her baby girl, Moka, starving right alongside her. They were stranded on a farm in Viotá with nothing left to eat, after the drought and the regional fires stripped the land bare. Both have now been stabilized, and they're being prepared for their transfer to the sanctuary this week, where they'll have food, care, and safety for the rest of their lives.
