Hi, my name is Caliph Rasul, and I’m a 46-year-old father of three. Over the past few years, I’ve endured six strokes and two heart attacks, and I'm currently on the road to recovery. It's been a tough journey, and unfortunately, I'm unable to work due to the lasting effects of my health struggles.

I’m a graphic designer by profession, and not being able to do what I love has not only impacted me emotionally but has also made it difficult to cover basic bills and the cost of a home health care aide, which I desperately need during this time.

I’m reaching out for support to help ease the financial burden on my family while I focus on healing and regaining strength. Any amount you can contribute will make a huge difference and help us get through these challenging times. Thank you so much for your kindness and generosity.

Aid Caliph Rasul's Journey to Health

On April 6th, loved members of our GYTO community, Shivy and Crystal Brooks suffered the tragic loss of their son Bryce and a close family friend. Bryce, 16, was a selfless young man full of passion and love for life. Bryce was victim to a strong ocean current in Florida after his heroic action of jumping into the ocean to save a group of younger children out of the current. Bryce’s actions helped to save several lives. We can not even begin to understand the unimaginable impact this has had on their family, friends, and loved ones but know the power of this community.

Our GYTO community hurts for Shivy and his family as they navigate through this heartbreaking time and many of you have asked how to help. We know the power of this community, the power of your prayers, and the power of your service and impact. Please consider making a donation to support the Brooks family during this time. Every donation can make an impact for this GYTO family member who needs us now more than ever.

The funds raised through the GoFundMe campaign will be used to cover the funeral expenses of Bryce Brooks, and the remaining amount will be used to fund the start-up of the Bryce Brooks Foundation. Bryce was a true hero, and we want to honor his memory by educating the youth with swim lessons, CPR training, and other tools to help them save lives. With your generous donations, we can help prevent future tragedies and create a lasting legacy for Bryce. Thank you for your support.

Hector Alvarado was a fantastic father to Zuri. He dedicated himself to caring for Zuri and Zully. Hector put his dreams aside to ensure that Zuri had every opportunity she could dream of. Hector had a gentle soul and was a great human being. His physical build could be intimidating, but he was a teddy bear. Hector loved his girls Zuri, Zully and Gabby unconditionally.

With great sadness, we share the news of the passing of Hector Alvarado on July 3, 2022.

This fundraiser allows friends and loved ones to help Zuri Alvarado and Zully Ortiz in this sudden and tragic situation they have been afflicted with.

Zuri is a bright, sensitive, kind, funny and loving child. Zuri is now challenged by the sudden loss of her father, Hector. We have been asked how folks could help, so we decided to set up this link that will contribute to Zuris college in the future, hoping to make her future exactly what Hector always dreamed of.

Hector leaves behind Zuri, Zully, his parents, siblings, nieces and nephews, Zully’s brother and mother, and many friends. And Of course, his loyal dog Gabby.

College fund for Hector Alvarado's daughter Zuri

*** The outpouring of love and support in this time is staggering and beyond words. We are moved to tears. Our goal is not measured in dollars - be it one or one million - but in the impact we can make through Hayden's legacy in the world. ***

In loving memory of Hayden Cole Thorsen, his family and friends are setting up a memorial fund in honor and remembrance of him.

Hayden left us so unexpectedly this past May 21st, but he lived and was loved larger than life, more than any words can tell.

His service was held Thursday, May 26th at 1:00pm at the Noroton Presbyterian Church, where so many were welcomed and many more were able to be with Hayden, and can still be, revisiting his service here:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=JtsS69XVZDo

We aim to use this memorial fund to create a legacy for Hayden, allowing his spirit to continue to make a positive, life-affirming impact on the youth of our communities.

In lieu of flowers today and into the future, please consider making a donation to The Hayden Cole Thorsen Memorial Fund, the proceeds of which will be used to bring awareness and support to at-risk youth in their most critical moments of need and to help facilitate their pursuits and future accomplishments in Hayden’s name and honor.

We will continue to update the community here as we work to create and bring to life Hayden's Memorial Mission.

-----------------------------

Hayden grew up in the Brooklyn neighborhoods of DUMBO and Park Slope, where he attended the Packer Collegiate Institute through the seventh grade, while balancing his academic life with his pursuit of the sport he loved, traveling to play club hockey with the NJ Jr Titans and the NJ Colonials, with whom he competed in the 2020/2021 National Championships. This past season he had the privilege of playing for the Mid Fairfield Jr Rangers and was eagerly preparing to attend and play for the Dexter Southfield School in Brookline, MA as well as the u16 Boston Jr Eagles for the year ahead and beyond.

Hayden was a natural leader with an inviting presence that always started with a smile and a warm “hello” he extended to all. He was inclusive and encouraging of everyone around him – friends and competitors alike, who also always wound up friends.

He took great pride in his sense of character and was sharp as a tack, quick with insightful one-liners that could say everything that needed to be said in just one simple thought. He’s someone his peers and adults alike enjoyed being with, wise and understanding beyond his years.

And while hockey was a central aspect of Hayden’s life, it was the camaraderie and friendships he formed around the game, in school and beyond that truly defined Hayden’s life. Well beyond any rink or classroom, Hayden was a light in the lives of so many from peers to parents, teachers to coaches.

He was surrounded by an astonishingly good and strong group of friends here in Darien and inside every rink across the country and beyond, where they all held each other to the best of themselves as young men and women in competition and in life, knowing and standing up for right from wrong, supporting each other through life’s experiences.

While Hayden was a member of our collective communities for a seemingly short period of time, his life and impact will be remembered and felt forever for those lucky enough to know him and now for so many more through his memorial fund.

Please feel free to add your thoughts and recollections to the page as well.

Can I share something with you?

I am creating this post for my sister and she doesn’t know. Since April 2020, my sister has been in a coma due to TB Meningitis in Taiwan. I couldn’t give her a hug at Christmas or share my little toddler’s milestone goals with her because she is totally unresponsive.

According to the doctors, “At least 20% of patients who contract TB Meningitis will suffer long-term after-effects. These are often severe and may include severe brain damage, epilepsy, paralysis and hearing loss.” At the moment, my sister has not regained consciousness and remains unable to communicate with her family. Her diagnosis is grim.

It is hard to imagine someone who was so full of energy being stuck in a bed, helpless. We haven’t heard her voice or shared a good laugh in months.

As many of you may know, Martene has been living a minimalist, vegan solo traveler life for the last 10 years. She lives frugally and strives most when she’s teaching and connecting with new communities. Mar Mar, as I affectionately call her is dreamer, a doer. She’s a teacher who is fiercely independent and lives for her students. Oftentimes, an adventuress who loves hard and has always lived her life to the fullest.

My sister was on the other side of the world by herself for a month before my mom arrived. I cry sometimes thinking about how afraid she must have felt. Martene is totally dependent upon my mom physically assisting her with all her daily functions. This includes bathing, toileting and feeding.

My son will turn 3 years old soon and it fills me with dread that my sister will not be able to be a part of that moment with family.

Honestly, it’s been beyond rough! Some days I am angry and other days I feel hopeless because the medical bills are piling up and I want her home. I worry about them both. My mom has been out of work caring for her in Taiwan and it cost up to $200,000 to fly her home because of the special assistance that’s Martene will require. Each day that she is in Taiwan, gets more expensive.

Thank you to my entire family and friends who have been so generous and supportive through this time. Your contributions have allowed us to come this far without seeking help from our online friends.

I ask that you give what you can because it all counts. Thank you.See more of Martene life
