Amazing friend, artsy sister and overall wonderful human Crystal Hernandez was recently involved in an accident with a car while riding her bicycle, leaving her with a fractured clavicle and other injuries. Good news: she’s ok and on her way to healing! Less-good news: She is having surgery this week to repair the fracture with hardware, and she will require 6 to 8 weeks to recover.

<div> Unlike people with paid medical leave, Crystal is an artist and gig worker. She pieces together six or seven different jobs every week, all of which require physical labor. With her non-dominant arm immobilized with a serious shoulder injury, she's simply unable to do the work that pays her bills. Right now, her priority needs to be healing – not worrying about rent, groceries, and other everyday expenses. Her injury requires her to be extremely careful how she moves during her recovery.

<div>2 trans people were victims of a violent attack carried out by transphobes in Benton, Louisiana. They were attacked by a group of 10 transphobes, one of them had to be taken to a hospital by an ambulance, and the police sided with the transphobic mob and arrested both victims.

<div>This happened at Cypress Lake, AU was preparing to leave while her partner was in the restroom. A man started following AU and yelled threats and insults at her, and warned her not to use the restroom, something she wasn’t even trying to do. More people joined him and surrounded her. Her partner exited the restroom and tried to get in between AU and the man who started harassing her. The mob started pushing them, and after AU’s partner was shoved into someone the mob jumped on top of both of them and beat them for 2 minutes.

<div>One of them was knocked unconscious and had to be taken to a hospital by an ambulance. A staff member at Cypress Lake called the police, and the police sided with the attackers, who claimed that the two trans people started the altercation. They were both arrested and charged with "disturbing the peace."

<div>Despite being legally female, AU was still documented as being male by police and put in the men’s cell. In their efforts to misgender her, they went as far as making up a deadname to use in their report instead of her legal name. 
</div>

<div>The police claimed that the cameras at the site weren’t functional when they were asked about footage, but a lawyer would help them confirm whether this is actually true and obtain footage of their attackers. 
</div>

<div>Funds to help them pay their medical and legal bills and recover from this assault would greatly help them. She is also hoping that drawing attention to this will help them find a lawyer to take their case.

Help Trans Couple Recover from Hate Crime

<div>In October of 2025, I – along with my field director and friend Andre Martin and four other individuals – was indicted for my advocacy and protest against ICE and this administration. Our case, United States v. Rabbitt, is set to go to trial in Chicago federal court on May 26 and the result could determine the future of our constitutional right to free association. These charges are bogus, but regardless of the outcome, the stress, public scrutiny, and financial burdens of this ordeal have forever changed our lives.
</div>

<div>Currently, we are facing up to $250,000 in legal debt. Our lawyers are fantastic and we expect to win our case, which the government argued is a “spontaneous conspiracy” – that conspiracy being peacefully protesting outside of the Broadview ICE facility.
</div>

</div>
<div>As we and our legal team have said from the beginning, dissent and protest is not a conspiracy. After lengthy legal battles, the government dismissed the felony conspiracy charge just weeks before trial. But they did not dismiss all the charges, and we still have trial on the misdemeanor counts for intimidating, interfering, and impeding an ICE agent.
</div>

<div>If you are not familiar with myself or my case, I am a 27-year-old researcher and journalist who covers the far-right and ran for Congress in Illinois. Throughout my campaign, I was not just vocal against Donald Trump's secret police, but put my body and reputation on the line during protests. Even if you don’t know my face, you probably saw <a href="https://bsky.app/profile/katmabu.bsky.social/post/3lz6sxfky3s2t" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">this video</a> of an ICE agent throwing me to the ground last September. That is not what we were charged for, but it shows what the conditions at Broadview were often like for protestors.

<div>Andre is 27 as well, worked on my campaign, and has devoted his life to helping others through progressive advocacy, particularly surrounding the unhoused. We both love science fiction, petting cats, and cooking increasingly difficult recipes. We’ve worked in the nonprofit sector and progressive politics our entire adult lives – which is largely why we don’t have hundreds of thousands (much less mere thousands) of dollars to spare. We’re people with lives and futures and loved ones.

<div>Even if – or rather, when – we win our trial, our lives and futures will be left in disarray. The administration is using prosecution as a cudgel to ruin dissenting Americans’ lives through the financial and psychological burdens of our legal system. Times are unbelievably difficult right now, so I tried to avoid asking others for money, especially after many donated to our campaign after the indictment for our legal defense. That was a lifeline, but the costs have mounted beyond our expectations.

<div>As a trans person from Florida, I know what it is to have gender affirming services outside of reach. After years of searching for affordable electrolysis and finding it lacking, I decided I would be the person to offer these services. I started studying almost ten years ago, but housing instability and healthcare inequality stood in my way. I’m now in a stable enough position to resume this mission and with your help I will see it through. My future electrolysis practice is called Operation ZipZap. You may remember it from some years ago.

<div>The focus of Operation ZipZap is to provide affirming, affordable electrolysis with a focus on trans and non-binary people. This is a long-standing goal of mine and with your support I’m ready to make it a reality. Many people are unable to pursue permanent hair removal because of the cost. When we are able to schedule electrolysis, we often face microaggressions from well-meaning but out-of-touch staff who don’t understand the trans experience. I’m committed to providing services in a body positive, affirming environment because you deserve nothing less. Operation ZipZap will always function on a sliding scale, with a pay-it-forward program so that cost isn’t a barrier. Some surgeries, particularly bottom surgeries, require electrolysis. By removing this barrier, I can make those surgeries more accessible to trans people who are already struggling to pay for those procedures.

<div>I already understand the fundamentals of electrolysis, having attended half of a Florida-based electrology course. I’m grateful for all the support that I’ve received so far, particularly the previous GofundMe which allowed me to go to school for electrology in Florida. Now that I live in New York, I intend to attend Berkowitz school of electrology and begin practicing locally. Eventually I would like to practice in the rural south as well. I can start classes as soon as I have tuition, which totals $6.9k. An electrolysis machine, plus materials, will cost between $1-4k. I will also need magnifying equipment.

<div>Here’s the backstory: Jesse, a super healthy 47 year old guy, had a kidney out in November of last year after doctors found a 9cm tumor (It was a big shock, nobody knows what caused it). In 99.5% of these cases, removal of the kidney fixes the problem and patients go on to live a long and healthy life. Scans were clear post-surgery and we thought we were in the clear.

<div>But in June of this year, Jesse started having unexplained fevers and breathing problems. Scans revealed new tumors in his lungs, muscle and brain. He was diagnosed with Stage IV, aggressive renal cancer and hospitalized. He underwent surgeries to ameliorate the substantial fluid gathering around his lungs and stabilize his breathing.

<div>He is currently stable and has started treatment to slow the cancer (immunotherapy and targeted therapy).
</div>

<div>Indigenous climate activist, artist, musician, and father Jacob Johns was shot in the chest this morning, Sept 28.2023, during a No Juan de Oñate statue peaceful prayer ceremony in Tewa territory (more commonly known as Española, New Mexico). Jacob put his body between women and children when the shooter charged towards the altar. Jacob prevented the shooter from harming women and children. The shooter attempted to fire again but his gun jammed preventing him from committing a mass shooting of indigenous peoples while they were in prayer and ceremony. He was air-lifted to a hospital in Albuquerque, and had surgery. The shooter, who was wearing a red MAGA hat, is in custody of tribal police. We ask everyone to please pray with us that he survives this surgery and doctors have’ the strength and wisdom to help him.

<div>Jacob, who is Hopi and Akimel O'odham, has dedicated his life to Indigenous and climate justice. He is a skilled muralist and speaker, and specializes in non-violent, peaceful “artivism”. Help Jacob Johns Recover from Terrorist Shooting

<b>In the early hours of July 11, 2021, the world changed in an instant.</b> Josh Dowd—a spirit so bright, kind, and full of life that he left a mark on everyone he met—was found brutally assaulted and left for dead on the railroad tracks in Atlanta.<br /><br />The initial medical reports were devastating. Doctors classified his condition as a GCS3 coma—the deepest level of unconsciousness. We were told to prepare for the worst: that Josh would likely never wake up, or if he did, would remain in a persistent vegetative state. We were told to say goodbye.<br /><br /><b>But Josh had other plans.<br /></b><br />What happened next was not just a recovery; it was a defiance of the odds. In those critical first six months, while the world watched and prayed, Josh fought for every inch of ground:

<div>With your help, Sonya and some of her family successfully made the dangerous journey to escape artillery shelling in Chernihiv, Ukraine (see below for their story). They lost nearly everything after their home was ruined by bombing. Sonya's father has been working to help children in Kyiv escape to safety. We now hope to provide the traumatized children, Sonya and Polina, with a more stable new life in Poland: school supplies to start remote learning; clothes; shoes; bed linens and towels; books; toys; language lessons in Polish and English; and eye treatment for Sonya’s underlying vision problem that needs correction with some urgency.<br /><br />Since so many people have kindly asked what else the family needs and how they can help, we increased the goal of the GoFundMe to provide the family with their basic needs to get their life started since they’ve lost everything after leaving Ukraine. <div>UPDATE 1:<br /><br />I'm happy to share that the two mothers, Tatiana and Olga, and their two young daughters, Sonya and Polina, along with their dog Schwartz, successfully crossed the border into Poland yesterday. It took them several days of driving through extreme danger, and then a final 24 hours of traffic jams, lines, and chaos at the border. He formed Heavy ‘80s rock band Freaks and then moved on to major label recording and touring band D Generation, and then became a member of the world famous hard rock band Danzig. He has played, recorded, and/or written with Johnny Thunders, Rancid, Genesis P-Orridge, Danzig, Debbie Harry, Kid Congo Powers, Jayne County, Alan Vega and more.

In May I was diagnosed with breast cancer. I  underwent a double mastectomy in July with a six day stay in the hospital. A second surgery was performed in August for breast reconstruction. This was a transplant surgery. Harvesting fat from another part of the body. The two surgeries were so extensive they required over 20 hrs of micro surgery under anesthesia. Each surgery has taken several months of recovery to regain my strength and mental stamina. I’m finally having my third surgery November 20th. This will be revisions &amp; tweaking from the prior surgeries. Unable to work during this time the bills have been mounting. There are many expenses insurance hasn’t covered. It’s added up to a few thousand. There are also deductibles &amp; co pays we needed to pay that has drained my savings. I hope to be able to start looking for work again when I’m fully healed in a couple months. Until then I’m kindly asking the help of friends if they can afford to donate a few dollars to get me back on my feet and out of debt. Whatever can be given is appreciated, it all adds up. I can’t thank enough the friends who have already donated so much and I’ll be forever grateful. Unfortunately the campaign has come to a halt and the bills continue in the mail. My heart goes out to all of his friends and family but those most on my mind right now are his beautiful wife, Juliann, and children, Clementine and Woolsey, who lost a husband, father and provider much too early. No amount of money can ever make this painful time easier but I think a little cushion while they are in the earliest stages of grieving would be meaningful and helpful.
