I recently moved to Quebec on October 29, 2024, with the goal of studying and learning French for an album. I have applied for francisation, but one of the requirements is that I need to be free from 8 AM to 4:30 PM for classes.

<div>To cover my bills, including retrieving my belongings from Calgary and paying back my Calgary roommate, I have two options: work two temporary jobs (which I can’t do because I need that time for francisation and most jobs in Montreal require French) or work until I have enough money to get my things.

<div>You might be wondering why my belongings didn’t come with me. Long story short, I was supposed to travel with someone across Canada to stay in Montreal, but they bailed at the last minute. I had to buy an emergency flight to get here by Thursday and could only bring my laptop and a personal item bag.

<div>My streaming gear has failed, including an LCD screen and my live controller, so I need around $1,000 to replace that equipment. I also estimate needing another $1,000 to bring my belongings from Calgary to Montreal, which is a distance of 3,500 km. Additionally, I owe my roommate about $800. It’s all quite overwhelming, and I really want to focus on being a musician and streamer.

<div>I have one job in Montreal, which is great, but I relied on streaming for income as well. The main issue is that I want to prioritize studying French, and working two jobs will not allow me to do that. On top of everything, I have to stop streaming until I can sort out this financial situation.

Help Spread Love to James on Valentine's Day!

<div>Blake McLeod is a Cree Trans multidisciplinary artist working and creating in Mohkinstsis, and the powerhouse behind CINIC Studio.

<div>Since January 2022 Blake has been trying to access top surgery and has been met with nothing but barriers. Alberta’s healthcare systematically oppresses and dehumanizes Queer and Trans folks, especially those who do not identify within the gender binary of “male” or “female”.
</div>
<div>From being on a consultation wait list for a year and a half only to learn the surgeon they were referred to has earned the nickname “The Butcher of Red Deer”, to being told that if they wanted to consult with a different surgeon they would have to wait another three years for a consult, and another two years for surgery. Five years! 
</div>
<div>It has come down to choosing between the public healthcare route, which is government funded but comes with that five year wait list, or the private healthcare route where the patient is responsible to pay for everything. 
</div>
<div>$10,000 is the exact amount that is needed to cover the following:

But it’s time Blake is shown that they are worth fighting for, and that they deserve just as much care and support from their community as they put into it.

<div>​​Kaffeeklatsch creates all-ages spaces where artists, musicians, youth, and queer, trans and marginalized folks safely gather and form meaningful connections. We transmute the cafe space into a nightclub, a drag ballroom, an art gallery, a boutique clothing store, and more—sometimes even becoming many of these spaces simultaneously. We’ve seen friendships, mentorships, and community grow and flourish in our cafe, and we’ve heard just how badly Calgary needs a space like ours.

<div>But there’s a problem—one that threatens Kaffeeklatsch’s ongoing existence …

<div>The bamboo is showing on Kaffeeklatsch's facade. Or—more literally—the warped, damaged laminate board is showing beneath the peeling paint of the frontage. The deterioration of the facade poses a major risk of damaging the building, which is almost a century old: it was built in 1925.

</div>
<div>It has come to our attention that the onus is on us to fix it. We are lease-bound in this matter.
</div>
<div><br />
</div>
<div>We tried to fix it ourselves. But after attempting to do so, we’ve realized that this project clearly lies beyond our DIY punk rock capabilities. (We even built scaffolding! And made wood panels! It was a disaster!)
</div>

</div>
<div>Multiple estimates have placed the cost of fixing the facade at an estimated $10,000.
</div>
<div><br />
</div>
<div>This unexpected cost hits us in an already difficult year. We have high fixed expenses, cash flow is tight, and we need to repair the facade or risk defaulting on our lease. To make that clear: if we don’t fix this, we may not be able to continue to exist. 
</div>

<div>We love the beautiful, passionate community that has been growing around Kaffeeklatsch, and we want to keep fostering connections and growing our safe, all-ages space.

Kaffeeklatsch Needs a Lil Zhuzh

<p>My name is Robyn Adams, sister-in-law to Sarah Adams, and aunt to Vera and Dorothy. This fundraiser is for them.
</p>

<p>It wasn't that long ago that I was at a family dinner in my mother-in-laws home, and the phone rang. It was Sarah with the news that Mike had just been diagnosed with late stage cancer. It was shocking for us, but for Sarah and their young girls, it was life shattering.
</p>

<p>Mike was young, seemingly healthy, and so needed by his family. To Sarah he's her "rock solid co-parent" and one of her best pals. To their daughters, Vera and Dorothy, he's Dad.
</p>

<p>He's been the most incredible Dad, teaching them "kindness, humour, and incredible bravery. He's introduced them to music, festivals and culture, and has worked so hard to support them and foster their interests." Challenging doesn't begin to describe how it has been for them, knowing his time was running out. They will be moving forward into teenage years and the rest of life without a father they adore.
</p>

<p>Mike's recent decline happened very quickly, meaning Sarah has had to unexpectedly halt operations of her small business (Alberta Girl Acres) at the peak of the season. She knows her daughters will do best being in Calgary, closer to friends and family, so she is in the process of selling her dream farm and rehoming her animal buddies. The last couple of years have already been HARD, but the days and weeks ahead will be worse.
</p>

<p>Mike was moved to hospice last week. They thought they had more time.
</p>

<p>Like you, I want to help, but also feel helpless in knowing how. Realistically, bills still need to be paid even in the most tragic circumstances. It might be one of the only things we can make a meaningful difference with right now.
</p>

<p>I know Sarah has created an incredible community of beautiful people around her, and it's time for us to come together and lift her through the hardest days of her life.
</p>

<p>All donations from this fundraiser will go towards helping Sarah and her girls navigate this final phase in saying goodbye to Mike.

<p>We’re a group of young climate justice organizers writing from Jason Kenney’s Alberta. Alongside other terrifying promises like repealing overtime pay, outing gay kids in schools, cutting healthcare funding by 25%, and tying funding for Indigenous nations to their stance on energy projects, our newly elected premier has promised to spend $30 million of public funds to <a href="https://www.cbc.ca/news/canada/edmonton/jason-kenney-fight-back-strategy-ucp-alberta-oil-1.5067861">build a “war room”</a>  spreading propaganda about Alberta’s oil sands and the people fighting for a transition away from them. He’s also <a href="https://briarpatchmagazine.com/articles/view/the-war-on-boycotts">promised funds to spy on and litigate work like ours.</a> <br /><br />SO, we wish weren’t writing this, but we’re <strong>building our own "war room" and we’ll need your help</strong>. We’ll use the funds to grow our work having face-to-face conversations with other Albertans about the need for a just transition to 100% renewable energy, training other organizers, and staging creative direct actions for Indigenous rights and climate justice.
</p>

But Indigenous-led efforts to stop oil sands expansion aren't working because we have a lot of money from rich people (though seeing as <a href="https://www.progressalberta.ca/whos-behind-shaping-alberta">that’s how Mr. Kenney’s work is funded</a>  we can understand his confusion). They’re working because of regular people like us all across the world who are desperate for a future with a liveable climate, good work, and Indigenous rights. They’re working because we see OUR HOUSE IS ON FIRE and since the early 2000s our governments have responded to that fact with a plan to triple oil sands production instead of one to transition our energy system. <br /><br />We have so much work ahead of us, and Kenney is going to make it as hard as he can. Help us fight back!

<p><strong>Our "war room" &gt; Kenney’s war room</strong><br /><br />Jason Kenney’s war room will be $30 million dollars. We think we can build ours for a fiscally conservative $30 *hundred* dollars instead. <br /><br /><strong>For $3,000</strong> we’ll be able to hold trainings for a 100 young people, talk to 1000s of other Albertans by canvassing and holding town halls on how to build a Green New Deal here for this province, and work with the <a href="https://www.facebook.com/Beaver-Hills-Warriors-2531442083566104/?fref=pb&amp;hc_location=profile_browser">Beaver Hills Warriors</a>  to build an Indigenous food sovereignty movement and hold ongoing actions in this city.  <br /><br /><strong>For $10,000</strong> we’ll be able to reach twice as many people, restart our <a href="https://edmontonjournal.com/business/energy/climate-justice-portrait-series-to-span-trans-mountain-pipeline-expansion">People on the Path</a>  land art project to do creative direct action against the Trans Mountain pipeline, support 1000s of Alberta based <a href="https://www.thestar.com/edmonton/2019/03/15/meet-the-edmonton-students-joining-the-global-strike-for-action-on-climate-change.html">high-school climate strikers</a> , and start a rapid-response fund to protect our allies and frontline communities as they come under attack from Jason Kenney’s politics of austerity and hate. <br /><br /><strong>For $30,000</strong> we’ll be able to do all of the above, reach thousands more people, and rent a physical ‘war room’ -- a climate justice action centre to share with a dozen allied community groups and multiply our efforts to fight Kenney’s agenda. <br /><br />Whatever level we reach, it will make a big dent in this government’s plans to let fossil fuel corporations sous-vide the planet as fast as they can. We know that offering an alternative vision that meets the scale of the overlapping crisis of economic inequality, climate change, and white supremacy is the best way to fight the <a href="https://pressprogress.ca/meet-30-candidates-for-jason-kenneys-ucp-who-got-caught-promoting-hateful-and-extremist-views/">growing wave</a>  of <a href="https://north99.org/2019/02/17/doug-ford-jason-kenney-endorse-anti-immigrant-far-right-yellow-vests-convoy/">far-right petro-nationalism</a> Jason Kenney is stoking in our province.
