<div>I’m Duncan Kinney, former editor of the Progress Report, an independent news site doing accountability and investigative journalism focused on holding the powerful to account.

<div>My journalism focused extensively on the Edmonton Police Service, and I have uncovered many stories exposing EPS misconduct, misspending and misappropriation.
</div>

<div>As a result, the EPS made me the only journalist they ever stripped of press credentials and, in October 2022, the Hate Crimes and Violent Extremism Unit charged me with the 2021 alleged vandalism of two monuments, one dedicated to Nazi collaborator Roman Shukhevych and the other to the 14th Nazi Waffen-SS Division. This Nazi Waffen-SS division was the same unit where last year a veteran was given two standing ovations by MPs in parliament, causing an international scandal and the resignation of the Speaker of the House.

<div>I have pled not guilty, and am still awaiting my trial.
</div>

</div>
<div>But in the meantime, this has taken an enormous toll on my life and my family. The process has cost us nearly $75,000 and I’m still awaiting trial, with the costs continuing to mount.

<div>Fighting to uncover truths that Alberta’s wealthy and powerful don’t want exposed is important and fulfilling, but far from financially rewarding. I’m a father to an 8-year-old, and we need your help. Please give what you can, and please share this with your networks.

<div>Here’s why the EPS would be interested in silencing me. Since 2020 I’ve done numerous reports on the EPS that upset them, including:

<li>Revealing that the EPS had a surveillance plane they kept secret for more than 20 years
</li>
<li>Documenting Chief Dale McFee’s attendance at a United Conservative Party political fundraiser where MLAs raced each other in T-Rex costumes

<li>Forcing the Edmonton Police Commission to reveal Chief McFee’s salary of $340K a year, making him the second highest paid municipal police chief in Canada
</li>
<li>Reporting on an academic study that found that 76 per cent of EPS officers didn’t carry Narcan
</li>
<li>The EPS dedicating three detectives to the case of Connor McDavid’s missing laptop
</li>

<div>In October of 2022 I was charged by the EPS Hate Crimes and Violent Extremism Unit for the alleged vandalism of a monument dedicated to the 14th Nazi Waffen SS division and the statue of Nazi collaborator Roman Shukhevych. I have written about these monuments prior to the vandalism and covered the vandalism, which occurred in August 2021, on the Progress Report.

<div>While I was charged with mischief under $5000 I was also charged with “Mischief in relation to a structure that primarily serves as a monument to honour persons who were killed or died in consequence of war.” The maximum penalty for this charge is 10 years in prison.

<div>The EPS and Alberta’s crown prosecution service are making no distinction between the alleged vandalism of a monument to a Nazi Waffen-SS division and a cenotaph honouring Canadian veterans.
</div>

<div>My trial won’t be until sometime in 2026.

</div>
<div>Former Chief Dale McFee and the now-new chief Warren Dreichel have also personally intervened in my case and submitted a 44 page application to act as an intervenor in my pre-trial applications. They were successful and this adds additional legal complexity and prep hours for my legal team. Please contribute if you can.

<div>Also, Danielle Smith, the far-right premier of Alberta and ally of McFee, said in 2023 that I had pled guilty to painting swastikas. She later withdrew those remarks and and apologized for them.

<div>My name is Mike Hooves. You might know me as Mx Jendr on stage. In September 2023, I was diagnosed with stage 3 Breast Cancer. I am devastated to announce that in February 2026 I was informed that my outlook has worsened; stage 4.
</div>

</div>
<div><strong>New Diagnosis</strong>
</div>
<div>I received an ultrasound in February 2026 after experiencing persistent and worsening upper abdominal pain that left me in urgent care. My family's history of gallbladder issues led me to believe this may have been the cause—not the case, as my ultrasound showed suspicious lesions. Things moved quickly from there. I received an MRI, CAT scan, and bone scan. A liver biopsy was performed, which led to major healing complications, including endless blood draws and hospital visits, as well as being assigned a new oncologist.
</div>

</div>
<div>These tests discovered innumerable instances of metastasis in my liver and throughout my upper skeleton. My liver swelled from 12cm to 16cm, causing a great deal of abdominal pain and affecting my ability to eat. My bones (particularly my hips, ribs, and spine) are so full of cancer that I fractured a rib attempting to lift a water bottle. This too causes pain and I require the use of a cane to walk.
</div>

</div>
<div><strong>Treatment</strong>
</div>
<div>I started an oral chemotherapy regimen on March 22, 2026, and will begin receiving bisphosphonate therapy and a more aggressive form of endocrine therapy at a later date. Much of this will occur at the Arthur J.E. Child Cancer Centre in Calgary.
</div>

</div>
<div>These treatments are life-long. If these medications work, I must stay on them or risk being killed by my cancer. Stage 4 means there is no end in sight; it is a stage designed to prolong life. I will live with the side effects of my medications and cancer treatment until I die.
</div>
<div><br />
</div>
<div><strong>Life</strong>
</div>
<div>I presently have a lowered quality of life. I am consistently nauseated and I struggle to eat. Even the slightest movement causes pain, and I require support from my caregiver and cane. Cancer is taking an immense toll on my mental health. This disease and the life-long treatment associated with it are affecting my overall ability to function; it is scary, sad, and lonely.
</div>
<div><br />
</div>
<div>Stage 4 cancer has left me bedridden due to nausea, pain, and fatigue. At this point in my treatment, even short walks and household chores are extremely draining—not to mention my bones are presently very fragile. Things I normally love, including spending time outside, as well as socializing with friends and family are oftentimes difficult, and sometimes impossible. I am experiencing a profound loss of identity, as I struggle to engage in art, community, and performance. I hope I can return to this, but for now it is important that I prioritize rest.
</div>

</div>
<div>Additionally, stage 4 cancer is strongly affecting my wife, Bryce. She dedicates herself to taking care of my needs at the cost of her own, and it's clear that my physical health weighs heavily on her own mental wellbeing. I want to highlight that throughout this struggle that her needs are oftentimes secondary to my own as she communicates the details of my diagnosis and overall health with others. Please tend to her and keep her in your thoughts as a human who also needs attention, reassurance, and care in this process.
</div>

<div><strong>Income</strong>
</div>
<div>It is clear that I will need to leave my job and freelance practice to focus on my health—something I will be required to do in short order. I will be pursuing AISH, however this requires me to complete my taxes which (I am embarrassed to say) I have not prioritized since my first instance of cancer.
</div>

</div>
<div>Bryce no longer holds an office job and prioritizes flexible working hours as she takes care of my physical health, and her own mental wellbeing. Together, our finances are not in a place where we can sit quietly and determine our next steps in a peaceful manner. Rent, bills, groceries, as well the debt we accrued during my last cancer treatment are waiting in the wings as our accounts dwindle.
</div>

<div><strong>What We Need Help With</strong>

<div>We hope to cover the following costs over the next four months:

Mike Does Stage 4 Breast Cancer

<div>It's JHNNAI. I hope everyone has had a nice day. I've been hesitant to share this for obvious reasons, but the circumstances I’m facing leave me no choice. I recently moved to Quebec on October 29, 2024, with the goal of studying and learning French for an album. I have applied for francisation, but one of the requirements is that I need to be free from 8 AM to 4:30 PM for classes.
</div>
<div><br />
</div>
<div>To cover my bills, including retrieving my belongings from Calgary and paying back my Calgary roommate, I have two options: work two temporary jobs (which I can’t do because I need that time for francisation and most jobs in Montreal require French) or work until I have enough money to get my things.
</div>
<div><br />
</div>
<div>You might be wondering why my belongings didn’t come with me. Long story short, I was supposed to travel with someone across Canada to stay in Montreal, but they bailed at the last minute. I had to buy an emergency flight to get here by Thursday and could only bring my laptop and a personal item bag.
</div>
<div><br />
</div>
<div>My streaming gear has failed, including an LCD screen and my live controller, so I need around $1,000 to replace that equipment. I also estimate needing another $1,000 to bring my belongings from Calgary to Montreal, which is a distance of 3,500 km. Additionally, I owe my roommate about $800. It’s all quite overwhelming, and I really want to focus on being a musician and streamer.

<div>I have one job in Montreal, which is great, but I relied on streaming for income as well. The main issue is that I want to prioritize studying French, and working two jobs will not allow me to do that. On top of everything, I have to stop streaming until I can sort out this financial situation.

<div>If we can achieve this goal, it would improve my living situation and allow for a fresh start as I intended.

Help Spread Love to James on Valentine's Day!

<div>Blake McLeod is a Cree Trans multidisciplinary artist working and creating in Mohkinstsis, and the powerhouse behind CINIC Studio.

<div>Since January 2022 Blake has been trying to access top surgery and has been met with nothing but barriers. Alberta’s healthcare systematically oppresses and dehumanizes Queer and Trans folks, especially those who do not identify within the gender binary of “male” or “female”.
</div>
<div>From being on a consultation wait list for a year and a half only to learn the surgeon they were referred to has earned the nickname “The Butcher of Red Deer”, to being told that if they wanted to consult with a different surgeon they would have to wait another three years for a consult, and another two years for surgery. Five years! 
</div>
<div>It has come down to choosing between the public healthcare route, which is government funded but comes with that five year wait list, or the private healthcare route where the patient is responsible to pay for everything. 
</div>
<div>$10,000 is the exact amount that is needed to cover the following:

<div>​​Kaffeeklatsch creates all-ages spaces where artists, musicians, youth, and queer, trans and marginalized folks safely gather and form meaningful connections. We transmute the cafe space into a nightclub, a drag ballroom, an art gallery, a boutique clothing store, and more—sometimes even becoming many of these spaces simultaneously. We’ve seen friendships, mentorships, and community grow and flourish in our cafe, and we’ve heard just how badly Calgary needs a space like ours.

<div>But there’s a problem—one that threatens Kaffeeklatsch’s ongoing existence …

<div>The bamboo is showing on Kaffeeklatsch's facade. Or—more literally—the warped, damaged laminate board is showing beneath the peeling paint of the frontage. The deterioration of the facade poses a major risk of damaging the building, which is almost a century old: it was built in 1925.

</div>
<div>It has come to our attention that the onus is on us to fix it. We are lease-bound in this matter.
</div>
<div><br />
</div>
<div>We tried to fix it ourselves. But after attempting to do so, we’ve realized that this project clearly lies beyond our DIY punk rock capabilities. (We even built scaffolding! And made wood panels! It was a disaster!)
</div>

</div>
<div>Multiple estimates have placed the cost of fixing the facade at an estimated $10,000.
</div>
<div><br />
</div>
<div>This unexpected cost hits us in an already difficult year. We have high fixed expenses, cash flow is tight, and we need to repair the facade or risk defaulting on our lease. To make that clear: if we don’t fix this, we may not be able to continue to exist.

<div>We love the beautiful, passionate community that has been growing around Kaffeeklatsch, and we want to keep fostering connections and growing our safe, all-ages space.

Kaffeeklatsch Needs a Lil Zhuzh

<p>My name is Robyn Adams, sister-in-law to Sarah Adams, and aunt to Vera and Dorothy. This fundraiser is for them.
</p>

<p>It wasn't that long ago that I was at a family dinner in my mother-in-laws home, and the phone rang. It was Sarah with the news that Mike had just been diagnosed with late stage cancer. It was shocking for us, but for Sarah and their young girls, it was life shattering.
</p>

<p>Mike was young, seemingly healthy, and so needed by his family. To Sarah he's her "rock solid co-parent" and one of her best pals. To their daughters, Vera and Dorothy, he's Dad.
</p>

<p>He's been the most incredible Dad, teaching them "kindness, humour, and incredible bravery. He's introduced them to music, festivals and culture, and has worked so hard to support them and foster their interests." Challenging doesn't begin to describe how it has been for them, knowing his time was running out. They will be moving forward into teenage years and the rest of life without a father they adore.
</p>

<p>Mike's recent decline happened very quickly, meaning Sarah has had to unexpectedly halt operations of her small business (Alberta Girl Acres) at the peak of the season. She knows her daughters will do best being in Calgary, closer to friends and family, so she is in the process of selling her dream farm and rehoming her animal buddies. The last couple of years have already been HARD, but the days and weeks ahead will be worse.
</p>

<p>Mike was moved to hospice last week. They thought they had more time.
</p>

<p>Like you, I want to help, but also feel helpless in knowing how. Realistically, bills still need to be paid even in the most tragic circumstances. It might be one of the only things we can make a meaningful difference with right now.

<p>I know Sarah has created an incredible community of beautiful people around her, and it's time for us to come together and lift her through the hardest days of her life.

<p>We’re a group of young climate justice organizers writing from Jason Kenney’s Alberta. Alongside other terrifying promises like repealing overtime pay, outing gay kids in schools, cutting healthcare funding by 25%, and tying funding for Indigenous nations to their stance on energy projects, our newly elected premier has promised to spend $30 million of public funds to <a href="https://www.cbc.ca/news/canada/edmonton/jason-kenney-fight-back-strategy-ucp-alberta-oil-1.5067861">build a “war room”</a>  spreading propaganda about Alberta’s oil sands and the people fighting for a transition away from them. He’s also <a href="https://briarpatchmagazine.com/articles/view/the-war-on-boycotts">promised funds to spy on and litigate work like ours.</a> <br /><br />SO, we wish weren’t writing this, but we’re <strong>building our own "war room" and we’ll need your help</strong>. We’ll use the funds to grow our work having face-to-face conversations with other Albertans about the need for a just transition to 100% renewable energy, training other organizers, and staging creative direct actions for Indigenous rights and climate justice.
</p>

But Indigenous-led efforts to stop oil sands expansion aren't working because we have a lot of money from rich people (though seeing as <a href="https://www.progressalberta.ca/whos-behind-shaping-alberta">that’s how Mr. Kenney’s work is funded</a>  we can understand his confusion). They’re working because of regular people like us all across the world who are desperate for a future with a liveable climate, good work, and Indigenous rights. They’re working because we see OUR HOUSE IS ON FIRE and since the early 2000s our governments have responded to that fact with a plan to triple oil sands production instead of one to transition our energy system. <br /><br />We have so much work ahead of us, and Kenney is going to make it as hard as he can. Help us fight back!

<p><strong>Our "war room" &gt; Kenney’s war room</strong><br /><br />Jason Kenney’s war room will be $30 million dollars. We think we can build ours for a fiscally conservative $30 *hundred* dollars instead. <br /><br /><strong>For $3,000</strong> we’ll be able to hold trainings for a 100 young people, talk to 1000s of other Albertans by canvassing and holding town halls on how to build a Green New Deal here for this province, and work with the <a href="https://www.facebook.com/Beaver-Hills-Warriors-2531442083566104/?fref=pb&amp;hc_location=profile_browser">Beaver Hills Warriors</a>  to build an Indigenous food sovereignty movement and hold ongoing actions in this city.  <br /><br /><strong>For $10,000</strong> we’ll be able to reach twice as many people, restart our <a href="https://edmontonjournal.com/business/energy/climate-justice-portrait-series-to-span-trans-mountain-pipeline-expansion">People on the Path</a>  land art project to do creative direct action against the Trans Mountain pipeline, support 1000s of Alberta based <a href="https://www.thestar.com/edmonton/2019/03/15/meet-the-edmonton-students-joining-the-global-strike-for-action-on-climate-change.html">high-school climate strikers</a> , and start a rapid-response fund to protect our allies and frontline communities as they come under attack from Jason Kenney’s politics of austerity and hate. <br /><br /><strong>For $30,000</strong> we’ll be able to do all of the above, reach thousands more people, and rent a physical ‘war room’ -- a climate justice action centre to share with a dozen allied community groups and multiply our efforts to fight Kenney’s agenda. <br /><br />Whatever level we reach, it will make a big dent in this government’s plans to let fossil fuel corporations sous-vide the planet as fast as they can. We know that offering an alternative vision that meets the scale of the overlapping crisis of economic inequality, climate change, and white supremacy is the best way to fight the <a href="https://pressprogress.ca/meet-30-candidates-for-jason-kenneys-ucp-who-got-caught-promoting-hateful-and-extremist-views/">growing wave</a>  of <a href="https://north99.org/2019/02/17/doug-ford-jason-kenney-endorse-anti-immigrant-far-right-yellow-vests-convoy/">far-right petro-nationalism</a> Jason Kenney is stoking in our province.
