<div>On November 1st, 2023 our lives changed forever when Bobby, who is almost 67 years old, became a victim of a senseless assault just two houses away from our home in Haleiwa, Hawaii. Bobby was left injured and unconscious on the side of the road by his attackers. By the grace of God, he regained consciousness and somehow made it home.

<div>The road to recovery has proven to be a challenging and costly journey. Bobby has suffered severe injuries to his right eye. He has seen several doctors on Oahu but none of them have the technology needed to repair his eye.

<div>He is now faced with the fact that the only way to get any type of recovery, is to go to an Eye Institute on the mainland. The road to recovery involves extensive medical procedures including surgeries, medications, and ongoing treatments to hopefully restore his vision and overall well-being.

<div>The medical expenses associated with Bobby's recovery are overwhelming. We never anticipated such a tragedy. We are now faced with the challenge of unexpected medical bills. The financial burden adds an additional layer of stress during an already difficult time.

<div>August 8th was a day of unimaginable devastation due to a fast-moving, uncontrollable brush fire that swept through Lahaina, a picturesque town on the island of Maui. It was a relief to finally hear that my friend, Lisa Jones, made it out alive, but like so many other survivors of the fire, her experience is a harrowing tale. In just a matter of hours, she went from contemplating what to do on an unexpected day off due to a power outage to contemplating jumping into the ocean with her dog, Chloe, to escape a wall of fire blazing towards her on Front Street.

<div>Miracle of miracles, a truck appeared and got them to safety.

<div>She and Chloe are safe at a friend’s place, thankfully, but outside her phone and the clothes on her back, she has lost everything. The photo of rubble and ash above is all that’s left of her house and worldly possessions.

<div>Lisa is a big-hearted person who is accustomed to being the helper (in fact, just yesterday she was out there negotiating tents and water for those less fortunate than her), and she initially declined my offer to set up a fundraiser. On the premise that “It takes a village,” she finally agreed and plans to use donations to help the community as a whole, fur babies included.

Help Lisa Jones Recover From Maui Wildfire

<div>The uncontrollable fire that devastated Lahaina Town on August 8, 2023, claimed all of the Wo Hing Society buildings. The first few days I cried and cried. I looked at photos remembering how much I loved being at Wo Hing, and now it is all gone. Truly, there are no words for such a great loss.
</div>
<div>The Wo Hing Hall, Temple, Cookhouse and Museum played an important role in preserving and honoring the history of the Wo Hing Society and the Chinese in Lahaina, Maui, Hawaii. The early Chinese immigrants had integral roles and contributions to Hawaiian history. They were seamen craftsmen, laborers and entrepreneurs all developing Hawaii’s economic and agricultural taro farms, rice and sugar industries. 
</div>
<div>The Wo Hing Society Hall and Temple was built on Front Street and served generations of Lahaina Chinese families since the early plantation days. The upstairs of the Wo Hing Society Hall was a Temple for religious celebrations and the ground floor served as a social gathering place. The Museum on the
</div>
<div>first floor of the Hall had a collection of Chinese artifacts along with memorabilia. The Cookhouse was a community kitchen where members would cook for special events. 
</div>
<div>The complex is also the place that holds the history on Maui of Dr. Sun Yat-Sen and his elder brother Sun Mei on Maui which lead to the establishment of the modern Republic of China.
</div>
<div>The Wo Hing Society is a nonprofit corporation that serves to perpetuate and maintain the Chinese culture in Lahaina, Maui. In its early years, the society provided members with a sense of community and mutual support. We also shared, with our visitors, the significance of learning from the past and how it
</div>
<div>applies to our future generations.
</div>
<div>Throughout the years, the Wo Hing Society of Lahaina conducted a Chinese Lunar New Year event, a Mid-Autumn Moon Festival, a Kite Festival, and many other celebrations that the community and visitors loved to attend. They learned so much about Chinese culture and have been touched by the history.
</div>
<div>When the time is right and finances have been acquired, we plan to rebuild the Wo Hing Society Hall, Temple, Museum and Cookhouse to continue sharing and honoring our Hawaiian Chinese history. We plan to rebuild the Museum and to once again provide a cultural tie to the Chinese history here on

<div>Maui. We send prayers to all the Lahaina community and Maui to come together to rebuild our beautiful community.

<div>Many of you know Lenny either from New Mexico, Colorado or Maui. He was a 100% Navajo, who was involuntarily relocated to Boulder when he was 9 along with his other siblings due to a major TB outbreak in his native home in New Mexico that ultimately took his mother and father.

<div>Growing up without his parents in a foreign culture at such a young age was tough for all of them, yet they all persevered and integrated into life in Boulder and became a well-known family.

<div>Lenny was a bastion of positive energy and light. He always had a smile on his face and an upbeat attitude and I know of no one who saw him as an enemy or threat. I mention often how you had to be careful about complimenting him on something, because, if you were his friend, he would literally give the shirt off of his back.

<div>Now it is our turn to help Lenny and give back so that Pam can pay for all the funeral expenses and do what is needed to give him a proper sendoff both in the tropics of Hawaii as well as back in his native home in the Rocky Mountains of Colorado and New Mexico. <p>In early March, Mikey, as we all call him, was diagnosed with liver cancer and it brought shocking news to his immediate family and our volleyball community here on Maui. He has been fighting, praying, and persevering very well.  We are all hopeful that this devastating disease will ultimately be removed from his body.
