<div>My friend and coworker, Steph Penza, has been diagnosed with Degos disease, an extremely rare condition that affects the small blood vessels and can cause serious complications where internal organs are affected. Because of how rare this disease is, it can often go undiagnosed or be mistaken for other conditions.

<div>Steph’s journey has been incredibly difficult. It began with bleeding stomach ulcers that eventually required surgery. About six months ago, she underwent another major stomach surgery, during which a significant portion of her intestines had to be removed. Shortly after that surgery, the skin on her hands began peeling, but she was initially misdiagnosed with eczema.

<div>Then, in May, Steph suffered a hip fracture without any known cause and required immediate surgery. Since then, her health has continued to decline. She became wheelchair-bound and is now in the ICU, where her medical team is working with specialists at the Human Care Center in Washington, D.C. to better understand and treat this extremely rare disease.

<div>Steph has used up all of her benefits and is currently unable to work or receive a paycheck. Meanwhile, life and expenses continue for her 15-year-old daughter, Izzy, and her boyfriend, Scotty, who are by her side through all of this. Her mom, dad, and sister are also praying every day for Steph to get well and come through this.

<div>Without even thinking twice, she went inside and brought me taco shells and meat.

<div>What I didn’t know at the time was that she had just given me all the food they had left.

<div>That was supposed to be her family’s dinner. It was the only food Q and her children had, and yet when a complete stranger showed up at her door asking for something to eat, she gave it away.

<div>I later found out why: their water had been shut off.

<div>Tyler sadly suddenly passed away on Monday, March 2nd, 2026, at Beth Israel Deaconess Medical Center in Boston, MA. Throughout his life, he faced and overcame more medical challenges than most people could ever imagine. When Tyler was born, he was diagnosed with brain cancer and underwent his first surgery at just five months old. Doctors told my parents that he likely would not live past the age of three—but Tyler proved them wrong in the most remarkable way. He would have turned 30 this coming August.

<div>Tyler spent the last five weeks of his life in the hospital, courageously battling several infections that ultimately led to him being placed on life support. While he was on life support, he suffered a heart attack, and in the days that followed, his organs slowly began to fail. Tyler remained on life support for nine days, and on the final day, he peacefully passed away, surrounded by the love of those who cared for him so deeply.

<div>Back in August 2024, Brian was diagnosed with a rare form of bladder cancer. Since then, life has been a rollercoaster for him, Courtney, and their boys, Tyson and Jake.

<div>Pretty quickly, it became clear Brian would need to step away from work at the Derry Police Department. He was in and out of the hospital, and Courtney also had to take time off from her job to be there for him and the kids.

<div>In December, things shifted again—Brian’s chemo wasn’t working. Doctors had to come up with a new plan, which meant surgery. He pulled through that surgery like a champ, and by January, Courtney was back at work and Brian was slowly healing.

<div>Once he was feeling better, Brian went back to work as the Resource Officer at Pinkerton Academy. But just a few weeks in, his health started to decline again. The cancer had come back. He’s now undergoing more treatment and has had to stop working again—this time, for good.

<div>Brian recently made the tough decision to take early retirement so he can fully focus on his health. In Memory of Mindy Maillett-Cook

Cathy was an eternally free spirit who loved to crochet, travel, listen to music and spend time with her loved ones and dogs.  She was always in a constant pursuit to be hospitable towards others and never missed an opportunity to do so no matter how small. Her laughter and smile lit up every room she entered and her sense of optimism truly had to be experienced to be believed as well as her creativity. She spent lots of time using her amazing talent to create high quality garments/blankets that will be keeping many of us warm and stylish for a lifetime. There was never any reason not to have a good time in Cathy's mind and any way she could make that happen, she would. “The greatest love story ever told...”<br />Those are the words that come to mind when I think about these three,...it was always about these three, they did everything together, as a family.<br />Madi is 12 years old and has had the most wonderful life because of her Mumma and Dudda, they included her in everything, vacations, future goals and dreams, she is their miracle baby.<br /><br />I struggled as to whether or not I should do this, Andrew left life insurance, well of course he did because he told Jillian “I’m going to leave you life insurance so you and your new boyfriend can enjoy it” Even in the most difficult times and conversations he found humor❤️<br /><br />And so for the immediate future they will be ok, but my concern is for Madison.  She is an absolute shining light for us all and I just want to make sure she will be able to go to college and live the life her dad would have wanted for her.<br /><br />People have come from everywhere in support so please, please if you cannot contribute it is just so okkk.  <br /><br />I am  just a Gamma worried about her life without this giant of man, the loving and kind dad whose eyes lit up when she entered a room.<br /><br />From my heart and soul I thank each and everyone of you for supporting my Jillian and Madison and for loving this wonderful, wonderful guy❤️

Madison’s Future

My name is Julie Lambert, and I am a Registered Nurse, and a life long Newton resident. I have not only been a patient of Newton Wellesley Hospital, but I was also an employee from 2001 to 2015. I am still closely in touch with many of my former colleagues who need our support. The units are so busy that there is no guarantee of a meal break, so having snacks and food readily available in the units make it easier for the staff to get much needed nutrition and hydration.  Staff I have spoken with feel it's best to stay in the unit rather than go to the cafeteria for food during a shift caring for COVID patients. The reason I am starting this fundraiser to provide meals, snacks and other requested items to the staff at Newton Wellesley Hospital that may make their shift a bit more bearable.<br /><br />Caring for patients under ordinary circumstances is a challenge, but during this crisis, the level of mental and physical exhaustion is beyond what most could understand. I can tell you from my personal experience, that on many days, food was the only solace during a challenging shift. Ask any healthcare worker you know, I am willing to bet they will agree!! <br /><br /><strong>Providing nutritious,  individually wrapped meals and snacks is a way for our community to come together and not only support our local hospital workers, but also put money into our local economy to help small businesses stay afloat. </strong><br /><br /><br />I am withdrawing the funds to purchase meal deliveries from local food establishments to be directly delivered to Newton Wellesley Hospital. The deliveries will be prioritized towards items for the staff of the Emergency Department, Critical Care Unit, Respiratory Therapy Department, and floors caring for COVID patients.  Withdrawn funds will also be used for the purchase of individually wrapped bulk snack items such as granola bars, almonds, crackers, trail mix, chips, and candy. <br />At the request of staff,  I am also purchasing bottled beverages, hand lotion, and individually wrapped facial wipes (which they are using to clean their faces after wearing masks all day). <br /><br /><br />I will be increasing the goal on a regular basis to encourage continuous donations for the ongoing support of Newton Wellesley staff. As the fund grows (positive thoughts here!) the goal is to provide meals/snacks/items to multiple departments on a rotating basis. Help feed the frontlines at NWH Hospital

On Monday July 29th, our family got news that still seems unreal.  A simple trip to the doctor for a long lasting cough turned into one devastating diagnosis after another.  My cousin Mark, 31, never a  smoker, was diagnosed with cancer of the heart and lungs, with blood clots and lung tissue death, along with other complications. The exact diagnosis is something doctors say they have never seen, and probably never will again. Hearing this would shock and scare anyone but Mark is as positive as ever! He is determined to fight, and that fight has already begun. Our prayers have been answered, and doctors have found a particular treatment of chemo and radiation that Mark has already started and the massive tumors on his heart are already showing signs that treatment is working! <br />He is a kind and humble man who would give his last dollar to someone in need. And now he humbly asks for help through this time. <br /> <br />We LOVE You Mark! You Got This!<br /><br /><br />Mark writes: <br />I have been diagnosed with small cell lung cancer that has originated in my heart. Its very rare for the mass to  grow/start there, but it is treatable with chemo and radiation, which I have started already on.  I still have a  long journey  ahead, but I  refuse to give up and will be  out of work because of this, and unfortunately,  bills still need to be  covered, especially the medical expenses from all of the treatments. Cancer patient needing  financial help

Well I just wanted to say that I have lost my Husband Al after 20 years. Life is not going to be the same with out him. He was admitted to the hospital on Saturday the 23rd and today on the 26th went in for them to check his Heart through a catheter in his vessels. He went in and never came back out alive, he went into cardiac arrest. He was only 55 years old. I am  much need of prayers and blessings to get me through this rough time. Especially when the doctors tell you this is a procedure they do everyday and he should come out fine and he does not. I am not a person that would every ask for help yet, I never thought I would lose him. He is my best friend my right arm my everything. I don't even know what to do now I am so lost. On January 7th, Sean Hurley lost his battle with addiction and the world of those who loved him grew a little bit darker. He will forever be remembered for his wonderful humor, sarcastic nature and loving heart. Sean is survived by his fiancée Erlene, daughter Abigail and unborn son. His loving parents John and Diane Hurley, sisters Erin and Lauren, nieces, nephews and friends he loved like family. For those who have not already heard the dreaded news, a very good friend of mine, Steve Ducey, was critically injured in a snowmobiling accident. It was a terrifying and life-threatening situation. Steve had to be med flighted from the Locke Middle School in Billerica to Beth Israel Deaconess Medical Center in Boston, where he endures a difficult and extensive road to recovery. Those who know Steve are well aware of what an incredible friend and person he is. Steve is a selfless, goofy with a contagious laughter, hard working, genuine, and all around amazing person who certainly did not deserve such a tragedy. The Wendover Family, both Laurie and Jay are officers for the Massachusetts Department of Corrections, and their family is in need of your help. Jay has been diagnosed with Leiomyosarcoma, a rare form of cancer that is extremely aggressive and is making it impossible for him to work. Laurie and Jay have been married only a few years but have been blessed with a beautiful daughter that is only 16 months old. He is currently going into Dana Farbers Cancer Center multiple days a week for chemotherapy and radiation treatment. The cost of parking, gas, food and other expenses are mentally weighing on their family. Laurie is taking on the responsibility of driving Jay into Boston for treatments and taking care of him while he is home, as well as their daughter, making it impossible for her to work right now. As many of you know , my good friend  Maelinda, a single mother of eight, just lost her youngest son. Nicholas Joseph Morani. He passed away suddenly and tragically. Maelinda is currently out of work because of an on the job injury.  She recently underwent back surgery and is currently struggling with physical therapy to try and get herself well enough to return to work. I would very much love to help MaeMae with the expense of burying her youngest Nicki .   A burden that no Mom should have to experience. Please help us help MaeMae. An innocent young man's life was taken tragically too soon this week. Friends, Family and well-wishers, <br /><br /> Last week my family received the most devastating news anyone could ever hear.  My nephew Devin, age 6, was diagnosed with an inoperable brain tumor and was given a life expectancy of 8 months to 2 years.  <br /><br /><img class="not-resizable" src="https://d2g8igdw686xgo.cloudfront.net/17819460_1485834568.2209_funddescription.png" alt="" width="100%" /><br />Doctors have explained that the tumor, known as Diffuse Intrinsic Pontine Glioma (DIPG), is a very rare and aggressive form of cancer typically found in children ages 5-9. Only 200-300 children in the United States each year are diagnosed with DIPG as they struggle to find a cure. This type of tumor is located at the base of the brain and the top of the spine.  Over time, it will impact all of little Devin's essential bodily functions:  heartbeat, breathing, swallowing, eyesight and balance.   <br />As I'm sure you can imagine my brother James, sister in law Christine and our families are deeply shattered by this news. James and Christine met one of the first days of freshman year in college and have been together ever since.  Their dream of having a big family came true with 4 beautiful boys, all 12 and under; Colin, Owen, Brenden and Devin. Their lives are devoted to these kids and the family.  <br /><br /><img class="not-resizable" src="https://d2g8igdw686xgo.cloudfront.net/17819460_1485832376.5191_funddescription.jpg" alt="" width="100%" /><br />Doctors at Boston Children’s Hospital have informed us that radiation treatments are the best we can do to keep Devin comfortable for his remaining time. As we struggle to pick our heads up and grasp what we are being told we just simply cannot allow this to happen without a fight. We have been calling doctors, sending scans and turning to clinical trials to see if any breakthrough treatments exist.  <br /><br />With all of these efforts comes a financial burden that no family should have to worry about while desperately trying to save the life of their child.  <br /><br /><img class="not-resizable" src="https://d2g8igdw686xgo.cloudfront.net/17819460_1485834142.2022_funddescription.jpg" alt="" width="100%" /><br /><img class="not-resizable" src="https://d2g8igdw686xgo.cloudfront.net/17819460_1485834121.6659_funddescription.jpg" alt="" width="100%" /><br />Devin is the youngest of James and Christine’s boys and the youngest of 8 cousins, but you wouldn’t know it!  Devin has spunk and a fun personality.  He likes to dance and make funny faces.  In fact, it’s hard to find one picture where he isn’t making silly faces.  He wants to be noticed and will make himself known.  Some of my favorite times with him are from reading him books and answering the questions that followed. He loves his grandparents and being with the family.  <br /><br /><img class="not-resizable" src="https://d2g8igdw686xgo.cloudfront.net/17819460_1485832706.8953_funddescription.jpg" alt="" width="100%" /><br />This past Christmas the cousins were all playing heads up and he was right in there doing his best. He is not afraid to speak up and holds his own with his big brothers. He will jump on you, wrestle you, and hug you when you least expect it. The brothers enjoy each other and spend the majority of their time together and supporting each other on the sidelines of their sporting events.  <br /><br />His cousins adore him too.  Each year we all vacation together and the cousins spend their days swimming, hiking and their nights playing hide and seek, board games, watching movies and roasting marshmallows. Please please please help this sweet family.<br /><br />A few days ago baby Ava who is two weeks old was taken to the hospital. Doctors said she had a viral infection and low blood sugar.<br /><br />Today her parents found out she is in organ failure.  She isn't responding well to the medication they have given her for the virus. <br /><br />Ava's parents are young parents to Ava and her two year old little sister. Ava is currently in a hospital out of town. Dad hasn't been able to work and anything you could contribute to this family would help them dearly.
