<div>Both of us are in a much better position than before, but still struggling to save money to afford some level of stability in the current economic and political situation.

<div>Due to federal funding cuts, a lot of the resources that would have been previously available to us (scholarships, rent assistance, legal assistance, food assistance, medical expenses, tuition waivers for job training, the sheer existence of job training, crisis intervention) have been rendered less available or completely unavailable.

<div>We have struggled to make effective use of these limited resources, due in part to the already difficult nature of our "too disabled to work all the way, not disabled enough to get tangible assistance" circumstances.

<div>Our circle involves folks who should by all accounts qualify for federal disability assistance, but are repeatedly denied due to age and the fact that we are able to hold down jobs.

The family that took me in was already having a hardish time however they opened their home and hearts to me and have truly integrated me into their family.

A Fresh Start for a Disabled Woman in Massachusetts

<div>My name is Adrian. I am facing eviction and have no where to go. I have tried every support system I can, to the point where my case manager isn't even sure how to help. Most social services in my area these days either have no money, are for veterans only, or require a child in the house. Money is restricted to a point where we have to make decisions about whether or not we can afford to eat.

<div>For four months my household has had almost no income, leading to our current situation. Donated money will be used to pay it back, with anything extra going towards September's rent so we can try to stay ahead of the curve.

<div>We went to eviction court as requested, where we were told we have to pay everything back within two weeks or we will be fully evicted. The lawyer and landlord were unwilling to negotiate, with the landlord not even showing up themselves. The mediator we spoke to offered us resources we'd already explored and made no attempt to speak to the lawyer to help us. Given the landlord's lack of appearance, the case was rescheduled to a week from now. But I do not have faith that the court will provide us much assistance. We were also told that the judge who handles these cases will simply choose to evict someone if they try to contest it.

Help me pay back rent and avoid eviction

<div>Hi, my name is Ezra and I am a 21-year old black trans person. I currently live with my grandparents, but I would like to move out as soon as possible. I live in an abusive household, and although the majority of the abuse is not directed towards me, it does take a huge toll on my mental health. My grandmother is verbally and emotionally abusive to my grandfather and feels the need to scream at him directly outside of my bedroom door almost every day. I do not have a car nor do I drive, so leaving home while they argue is not a possibility. I have tried encouraging both of them to separate on many occasions, but they seem to have no intentions to get a divorce. Furthermore, my grandmother has been getting more agitated with my grandfather lately and I am incredibly nervous that things will escalate to physical violence or worse. I’ve attempted communicating my concern to some other adults in my life but they don’t seem to care. I currently do not speak to my grandmother at all and avoid her to the best of my ability while in the home to prevent more arguments.

After years of struggle, she is also being initiated as a <em>pajé</em>, or shaman. To complete her groundbreaking training in both Indigenous and Western medicine, Adana must undertake a treacherous journey by boat to 38 Omágua organizations and villages along the Amazon river to present herself, undergo shamanic trials, and secure the blessings of her elders. She will carry out an educational program designed to help reconnect her people with their traditions and revitalize and celebrate the identity, health and resilience of the Omágua Kambeba people, bolstering their struggle for cultural and territorial sovereignty. Adana’s work strengthens her people’s resistance against the violence of genocidal regimes and industries, empowers her communities, and gives voice to her ancestors. <div>My name is Adana Omágua Kambeba. I am the first woman of my people in Brazil to become a doctor, having graduated from one of the top five federal public institutions in the country. This involved much struggle and resistance, especially against prejudice towards my Indigenous identity. I was the first doctor in my country’s history to have won the right to register both my names (Portuguese and Indigenous) with the Federal Council of Medicine (CFM). I was also the first Indigenous woman to sit on a commission with the CFM looking at the relationship between two types of medicine (the traditional Indigenous one and the Western). Until recently I was working in a maternity hospital and currently I am undergoing shamanic training by Amazonian shamans to become a Spiritual Leader for my people and thus be able to serve as both a doctor and shaman in the Amazon region. Through this campaign, I'm asking for your support to raise funds for a long journey on the largest freshwater river on the planet, located in the world's largest rainforest, the Amazon. Between 4-5 months (determining the exact duration of this journey is challenging due to numerous possible unexpected interruptions and delays) I aim to reach 38 villages and associations of my people, the Omágua Kambeba, who live scattered along the rivers of the Amazon rainforest, both within and outside their traditional territory.

<div>This trip is very important for me and for the leaders of the villages of the Omágua Kambeba people, who have been awaiting my arrival in order to carry out work to revitalize Indigenous culture, education, and identity. This will supplement the hard work and activism already being carried out by Indigenous leaders in the villages. This project aims to reinforce the struggle and empowerment of the Omágua Kambeba people, after five centuries of violence inflicted by governments, extractivist industries like logging and mining, and drug traffickers operating along the waterways of the Amazon region. It involves working with different age groups to raise awareness of the value of our Indigenous origins and our ancestors, who have been silenced. Their teachings are often not passed down to younger generations due to the shame and low self-esteem generated by the cultural massacres we have suffered since the arrival of the colonizers; through the Christianity imposed upon us for centuries; and the policies of previous governments that have resulted in ethnocide, seen in the partial or total loss of the cultural identity of many Indigenous peoples in Brazil.

<div>The money you generously donate will be used to buy teaching materials and for the costly resources to reach the Amazon region and travel the long stretch of the Amazon River (more than 715 miles), where transport can be precarious and expensive. It will be an arduous and sometimes dangerous journey. The educational program I have designed and will implement on this journey focuses on different age groups. With the children of the Omágua Kambeba villages, we will strengthen and celebrate Omágua Kambeba ancestral knowledge, education and self-care. Your donations will also reach groups of Indigenous women, where work will focus on female empowerment and the particularities of women's health. This will be done in a way to help better position them in the face of possible violence and disrespect for women’s rights. With teenagers and young adults we will work on self-esteem and raising awareness of the value of life, suicide prevention, and remembering our ancestral and spiritual values. And with Indigenous families, involving the participation of the men, there will be conversation circles emphasizing the knowledge and teachings of the ancestors and the construction of proposals to resolve internal and external conflicts in the Indigenous ancestral way.

<div><strong>Why is travel on the Amazon so expensive? </strong>

<div>After arriving by plane from Manaus to Tabatinga, a city in the Upper Amazon where the borders of Brazil, Peru, and Colombia meet, I will travel by boat on the meandering Amazon river for approximately 715 miles. Over several months I will visit 38 Omágua villages and organizations along the way, both on the banks of the Amazon and deeper into the forest.

<div>This will represent scores of different boat journeys to many different destinations. While some of these trips can be made on collective transportation, to reach the remote communities I need to visit I will largely depend on traveling by smaller, chartered boats, which are significantly more expensive. Costs include the fare and expenses of the boat captains (who will sometimes have to accompany me for multiple hours and even days at a time), the cost of fuel (the price of gasoline in the isolated Amazon region is extremely expensive, often double the national average), and cost for repairs (the engine propellers and parts of the motor breaking are common occurrences on the challenging waters of the Amazon, full of submerged branches and logs).

<div>In addition to the educational activities described above, I will undergo the "Degree Test". This involves conducting multiple Indigenous ceremonies with powerful Indigenous medicine and thereby showing my people, especially elders and leaders, the results of the many long years of shamanic preparation I have undergone. Through these ceremonies I hope to earn recognition as a shaman by my people. This medicine is part of the culture of the Omágua Kambeba people, and its use was silenced as a result of the ethnocide caused by first the Catholic church and later, churches from other branches of Christianity. However, its practice has endured to this day, often through its discreet use among a small number of families of our people. My trip to the Amazon represents a historical break in the silencing of this cultural practice among the Omágua Kambeba. And if I pass the "Degree Test", I will become the first Indigenous person in Brazil with both degrees, as both a doctor and a shaman. I believe these two medicinal practices (traditional Indigenous and official scientific) can have a fruitful dialogue in Indigenous health care, respecting ancestral traditions without ceasing to follow medical protocols.

<div>Zusätzlich zu den oben beschriebenen Bildungsaktivitäten werde ich den "Grad-Test" absolvieren. Dies beinhaltet die Durchführung mehrerer indigener Zeremonien mit mächtiger indigener Medizin und damit das Zeigen meines Volkes, insbesondere der Ältesten und Führer, der Ergebnisse der vielen langen Jahre der schamanischen Vorbereitung, die ich durchlaufen habe. Durch diese Zeremonien hoffe ich, Anerkennung als Schamane von meinem Volk zu erlangen. Diese Medizin ist Teil der Kultur des Volkes Omágua Kambeba, und ihr Gebrauch wurde infolge des Ethnozids, verursacht durch die katholische Kirche, zum Schweigen gebracht. Ihre Praxis hat jedoch bis heute überlebt, oft durch ihre diskrete Verwendung unter einer kleinen Anzahl von Familien unseres Volkes. Meine Reise in den Amazonas stellt einen historischen Bruch im Schweigen dieser kulturellen Praxis unter den Omágua Kambeba dar. Und wenn ich den "Grad-Test" bestehe, werde ich der erste indigene Mensch in Brasilien sein, der beide Grade hat, sowohl als Arzt als auch als Schamane. Ich glaube, dass diese beiden medizinischen Praktiken (traditionell indigen und offiziell wissenschaftlich) einen fruchtbaren Dialog in der indigenen Gesundheitsversorgung haben können, indem sie die ancestralen Traditionen respektieren, ohne auf medizinische Protokolle zu verzichten.
