Toms River resident R’ Shmuel Zundell’s life took an unexpected turn with the birth of his son Izzy. What began as a seemingly normal infancy slowly gave way to questions, evaluations, and ultimately a diagnosis that would alter the course of his family’s life. In this wide-ranging conversation, Shmuel describes the years that followed: navigating a rare neurological condition, repeated hospital stays, and the constant demands of caring for a child with significant medical needs. He speaks about the practical realities, the uncertainty that never fully disappears, and the decisions that had to be made along the way. Through it all, Izzy has become the heart of the family’s world, a source of constant inspiration and perspective. R’ Shmuel reflects on the unique gift of having a son who is “half malach in a human body,” whose presence transforms challenges into lessons of rock solid Emuna in Hashem.

Izzy has miraculously exceeded his life expectancy of 8–9 years. When he reached his milestone 13th birthday, against all medical odds, we raised funding to commission a Torah scroll to be described in his honor, celebrating this most auspicious occasion. Given the lamentable progression of this homicidal disease and forlorn degeneration of his medical status, we were strongly advised by preeminent religious and medical professionals to relocate to South New Jersey, where Izzy would be eligible to receive 24 x 7 nursing, which was no longer desired, but unequivocally required. In compliance with Rabbinical guidance, we were instructed that Izzy's Torah belongs wherever he resides. Therefore, we are currently planning the re-inauguration of Izzy's sacred Torah Scroll, which will be celebrated by the entire Tallymawr Toms River community. We are graciously accepting sponsorships to allow us to defray some of the financial expenditures involved. With G-d’s continued benevolence, we anticipate, be at the will of His Eminence, to celebrate Izzy's birthday/re-inauguration of his Torah scroll on Sunday, September 14, 2025. Details to follow.
