As a father, your instinct is to protect, provide for, and guide your child through life. Nothing prepares you for the day that is taken away from you. This Father's Day was unlike any other. Instead of celebrating the bond between a father and his children, I faced a grief so profound that it will remain with me for the rest of my life.

 In May 2026, my son, Jamal Rashad Parker, was taken from us through a senseless act of violence committed by people he knew and trusted. Jamal was much more than the tragic circumstances surrounding his death. He was a gifted and creative soul with an entrepreneurial spirit. He had talents in fashion, music, and art, and he approached life with imagination and determination. He was clever, funny, and full of personality. His sense of humor could brighten a room, and his creativity allowed him to see possibilities where others saw obstacles. Like many young men with dreams, Jamal was still writing his story. He deserved the opportunity to continue building his future, sharing his talents, and allowing his light to shine. That opportunity was taken from him far too soon.

 Our family is heartbroken. We are now faced with the emotional and financial burden of honoring Jamal's life and providing him with the dignified farewell he deserves. Any contribution, no matter the amount, will help ease these expenses and allow us to focus on remembering, celebrating, and grieving our son. I remember him making the best gourmet food out of whatever we had in our cabinets.. which made it perfect. I was never a fan of cooking. Burning pots was what I was known for, so I left the cooking to Pete.

<div>Pete has always had my back.  ALWAYS. He was fearless and strong. Even when we separated and went on different paths, we stayed close and co-parented until now. Throughout those years, I could always rely on Peter's word. If he said he'd get it done, he was already halfway through the action.

<div>Our sun Amen’Ra is a captivating spirit, a beautiful light, with eyes bright like the sun. He brightens up any room with his vibrant smile. He absolutely loves being in nature, his mommy reading to him, playing his djembe drums, and listening to his favorite album on the record player, Bob Marley. He especially loves the songs, One Love, Lively Up Yourself, and Crazy Baldheads.

<div>On March 11th, 2021 our sun Amen’Ra was forcefully taken from us by CPS, who claim we refused a B12 shot that was a matter of life and death, which is an absolute lie. We never refused a B12 shot, and at no point was he on the verge of death. Our Sun was then placed with a foster family without interviewing qualified relatives or friends of our family for placement while they investigate. He was later moved to another caretaker. At the time of being taken from us, he was 15 months old and I had recently discovered I was pregnant. My milk supply got low, and I went to Johns Hopkins All Children’s hospital to get some help, but was forcee left without my baby.

<div>On August 1, I gave birth, at home, to our beautiful happy and healthy baby girl. She ushered in so much peace to our hearts. We named her Ast, which means “the gathering/ coming together…” On August 11, while we were on our way to the Sheriff’s office to do a wellness check, we were surrounded by flashing lights and armed officers, who unjustly took Ast from me on the side of the road, exposing her to all kinds of dangers, with all these strangers around her. Now, I can’t bond with my babby girl and meditate with her on my chest, I can't hold my newborn daughter whenever she cries, or give her the breast milk that my body has produced for her very existence. My body feels when she is hungry, but I don't get to experience the joy of feeding her. I’m missing the most tender moments of her life. This is a nightmare and every second of every day until they Bring our Babies home.

<div>Our truth has shined light on the cracks in the system that our babies fall through. Too many mothers are crying, every night, unseen, unknown, unheard, for our babies that are in places where they don't belong.

<div>The Manatee County Commissioner recently declared that “ Racism is a county public health crisis.” Our son Amen’Ra is a prime example of that. My family and I are just one in countless other stories of the taking of children from caring parents that go unheard and unseen. 
</div>

<div>The racial discrimination that our community is facing right now is focused on Police Brutality because of the visibility and documentation. But we don’t think about the other forms of systematic oppression that come as a sub-set. In particular, the Victimization of our children through the Foster Care System. They become the forgotten ones, falling through the cracks because mothers and fathers are too afraid to take on the gigantic task of standing up to a way of thinking and laws that are steeped in colonial times. Parents are coerced to sign plans and documents under mental duress, essentially signing away their rights to a system that doesn't love or understand us.

Forced to extend my stay due to the quarantine, I've decided to stay on for a year as an artist-in-residence. While here, I am being brave. I am investing my own earned income in the creation of new work and the continuation of research on my ancestral past. I also hope to create a permanent second residence to one day invite other artists to join me in the same.<br /><br />During my residency, I have been able to work with both Gambian filmmakers and Atlanta-based collaborators to create a new visual short film filmed from the shores of West Africa to celebrate Juneteenth - the day of liberation recognizing the end of slavery in the US. The work features women in prayer through movement who from their different spaces in the world respond to the disproportionate loss of Black Lives during this current global pandemic and civil unrest.<br /><br />The work draws on my Pentecostal upbringing which included dancing or "shouting" during worship, a practice that is understood to have come from what was called the Ring Shout.  In this traditional African-American worship practice, my ancestors danced in circle as a way to preserve their African identity during enslavement. While here in the Gambia I am exploring my ancestral memory of such practices and the origins of these traditions in indigenous ceremony. In the case of the Ring Shout, this assertion of African identity was an act of resistance to colonization and erasure, and it speaks to our resilience which affirms today our survival - ultimately saying (all along) that Black Lives Matter. <br /><br />I am in the Gambia, West Africa returning home as proof that prayer, that assertion of African identity, is what has kept us all of this time. It was what kept our ancestors who were stolen from these parts and carried on ships over the middle passage. LIFE is what kept us - this assertion of BLACK LIFE is what kept us all along. <br /><br />Please consider supporting this extended residency and this forthcoming work. With this uncertainty and the current civil unrest around race and injustice happening around the world, as an artist activist, I remain committed and respectfully request support in order to continue working as an artist  in residence. <br /><br />While here in The Gambia this residency  will allow me to : <br /><br />+Continue to explore ancestral and embodied memory through movement, dance and the Ring Shout - the traditional African American worship practice which informs my work and who’s West African origins predate enslavement;<br /><br />+Continue my research on indigenous indigo practices and incorporate them into a new body of work on large scale canvas;<br /><br />+Work with a 96 year old Gambian griot who has interviewed elder griots since the 1960’s, preserving over 150 years of oral histories which include pre colonial narratives for the National Archives,  connecting  his work and our interviews to my research at Emory’s Stuart A. Rose Library;<br /><br />+Work with local nonprofit partner, <a href="https://www.smilingcoastfoundation.com/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">The Smiling Coast Foundation</a>  to offer community-based programming for youth including creating a 500 ft mural in the Gambia - while engaging Gambian artists with the goal of taking a team to a mural festival in nearby Dakar, Senegal in April 2021;<br /><br />+Create virtual content for <a href="https://fluxprojects.org/productions/remembrance-as-resistance-preserving-black-narratives/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Remembrance as Resistance</a> : Preserving Black Narratives, presented by Flux Projects, sponsored by the National Endowment for the Arts, National Black Arts, The City of Atlanta and Emory University;<br /><br />+Lay the groundwork for a tour of the Praise House Project in West Africa, building on connection in Senegal, Nigeria, Ghana, and Kenya. Minniefield has recently served as faculty for the Art and Visual Culture Department of Spelman College and as faculty for Freedom University, an underground university for undocumented students..  She is currently an artist-in-residence at Emory University through a collaboration with Flux Projects.
