Help Secure and Restore Lamplighter’s Patio

<div>My name is River Williams, and I am a Life Scout with BSA Troop 13G. I am fundraising for my Eagle Project and am working with OutMemphis to create an outdoor seating area for the Youth Emergency Center. LGBTQ+ youth are 120% more likely to experience homelessness than their non-LGBTQ+ peers. The Youth Emergency Center provides support for LGBTQ+ young adults aged 16-24 in crisis. It includes a comprehensive plan of cultivated green space, accessible seating areas with shade, and sustainable and low-maintenance landscaping for aesthetic appeal. This outdoor seating space aims to be a loving environment, serving as a safe place for quiet reflection, group discussions, or simply enjoying fresh air.

<div>Hey, I'm Cyn, but this is really not about me. The pup pictured is my companion and familiar of the last 11 years, Niniel. the Pitty Pity Princess, my Maiden of Tears.

<div>On Monday 2/13, I took her to the vet with apparent constipation and other assorted tummy troubles. Several procedures later, I learned that she had a tumor on either her liver, her spleen, or both. The bloating and upset was due to internal bleeding- blood was literally pooling in her abdominal cavity.
</div>

</div>
<div>Surgery was not really an option, due to both age, and the fact that it would not actually cure her. This was a malignant situation. She was stable at the time, and I and the vet agreed it would be best to take her home and give her the best last days I could. I was told anywhere from a few days to a few weeks.
</div>
<div><br />
</div>
<div>She had two very good days at home getting loved on, eating all the treats, and sunning herself on the upstairs balcony. She took a bad turn on Thursday evening. She was ready, even if I was not. On Friday, 2/16, I made the very painful call to let her go, opting for an at-home visit rather than stressing her by trying to get her in the car to the vet.

<div>Niniel got a cheeseburger, some of her favorite treats, and passed on in the comfort and safety of her home, with her family.
</div>

</div>
<div>I've never done this sort of thing for myself, but the costs involved in making sure she was taken care of were considerable. Any funds raised will go toward repaying my housemate for her assistance with the vet bills, and in balancing my own budget back out so that I don't fall badly behind on my bills.

This book aims to spotlight the challenges faced by these children in finding acceptance in every space they reside. We are seeking funds to bring this vital project to life.

<div>7 years ago a young person anxiously rang my doorbell. She and her friend needed a place to stay while they tried to regroup or end up homeless. Two days turned into two weeks and Mariah proved to be a hilarious house guest. We watched movies and listened to The Beatles and Elton John. Unfortunately, she and her friend didn't find housing. Taking them to First Congo, equipped to sleep outside on the church's porch, was my first experience seeing how others live. It was heartbreaking. Mariah and her friend were gracious for our efforts but we knew people deserve better.

<div>Over the years I helped Mariah when she'd get in touch. The last two years we saw each other often. I am grateful for that time now but wish I had appreciated it in the moment.
</div>

<div>Mariah was a prolific writer and would fill journal after journal with her thoughts, poems and songs. Her poems were outstanding. The kind you read and sit with the words as they touch your soul. You probably saw her once or twice at the coffee shops in Cooper-Young that allowed her shelter during the day- for a time- writing in her journal as she listened to music and sipped coffee, if she had the money.

<div>Mariah was quirky, smart, thankful and kind. Behind the fun she was also struggling. The streets were hard on her. She had diabetes but no care. She had mental health issues but not therapist. She had other health issues but slept under a juice bar during ice storms that middle class Memphians go to and never consider it's someone's shelter. She needed food regularly but that's hard in a city with compassion fatigue.

<div>Mariah developed an infection. She carried on with few complaints. Just something else she'd need to deal with as the world went on around her. But then it all changed.
</div>

<div>The infection spread until she became weak and sought out the ER. There her vitals weren't enough to sustain her and she had to be revived. She was a fighter. However, after days on life support Mariah's body couldn't fight as hard as her soul wished. The streets had claimed another life. A young person this time. A life not yet fully lived.
</div>

<div>Mariah had recently found her birth mom and a whole gaggle of loving and excited sisters. She didn't get to return to them in the short time she had
