<div>I’m crowdfunding for a bionic arm because it represents a significant step towards enhancing my life and independence. Born with one hand, I've always faced unique challenges that have shaped my experiences.

<div>Going to college has been a challenge as I feel like I'm "the odd one out" with my disability however with the Hero Pro I would be able to turn that into a positive outlook and be the person with the cool bionic hand.

<div>While I've learned to adapt and find creative solutions for everyday tasks, there are limitations that I still encounter. Simple actions like cooking, or participating in sports can be difficult, and I often feel the impact on my confidence and overall well-being.

<div>When I participated in cricket I often found it difficult to be as good as my teammates because of my disability and I'm hoping with the arm it will give me the confidence to go back to the sport i enjoy. I am also a member of army cadets and there are challenges there such as firing weapons and certain tasks on field exercises which I hope will become easier for me.

<div>When Vienna was born, she didn’t breath for nearly 5 minutes. She spent the first week of her life on a bed of ice, to reduce the swelling in her brain. Doctors told her parents that she would most likely be alright, but that she would probably be bad at maths. Now, 8 years old, Vienna is near the top of her class in maths and has read the first 3 Harry Potter books.

<div>Her mindset is just different to most people. And despite the challenges she has faced, she always pushes through and finds a way to achieve her goals. It is nothing short of remarkable. At age 2, Vienna was riding her first bike, a balance bike. By age 3 she had her first proper bike, with stabilisers. And by age 5, Vienna was able to ride a bike, with no stabilisers.

<div>On the playground, Vienna is always keeping up with the other kids and doing everything they do. The Headmistress at her primary school has very often commented during sports days that, “It isn’t Vienna we’re worried about.” Meaning, the teachers never have to give her any additional attention, she just gets on with it and many times she outperforms her classmates in physical challenges.

<div>The people who know Vienna, don’t see her limb difference. They simply see a bright, beautiful person, who welcomes every day with vigor and genuine excitement. But, for those that don’t know her, Vienna’s limb difference is noticeable, and it can make her stand out, in a way that is uncomfortable to her.

<div>On the playground, or at a park, Vienna would love to play with other children, without being judged, or looked at differently. But, kids are curious and she often gets asked questions about her limb difference. Sometimes people stare and don’t ask any questions. Which is possibly tougher for Vienna as she doesn’t even get the chance to explain.
</div>

<div>A Hero Arm would make Vienna feel that her limb difference, when viewed by others, is a positive thing, instead of a negative thing. Vienna doesn’t mind being looked at and having people come up to her and ask her about Nubby. What she does mind is the judgement that often comes from it. A Hero Arm, with her chosen Spider Man skin, would help to alleviate the negative connotations that go along with, being a bit different, than other people in this world.

<div>But above all, it would give Vienna the ability to, in her words, “Finally pinch her sister with her right hand.” And let’s be honest, there isn’t a more noble aspiration than that.

<div>My son Lewis, who is now 16 years old, was born with a rare condition called ‘Poland Syndrome’. For Lewis, this means he was born with his left arm and hand considerably smaller than the other one and without a pec major. His hand only had 2 digits which were webbed together.

<div>Following an extensive search to find a surgeon, Lewis underwent his first operation at 3 months old. This was the first of roughly 12 operations in order to improve Lewis’s movement and function. Over the years, Lewis has had hand reconstruction as well as muscle and tendon transfers from other parts of his body.

</div>
<div>Whilst these operations have made some improvements, he has reached the limit of what can be achieved through surgery. Now, at 16, as he moves into young adulthood, he has aspirations to be a firefighter and become an independent and self-sufficient adult. The hero flex would play a huge part in making this a reality.

Not only will he be able to engage fully with these activities, but it will open up a world of opportunity that up until now he has not thought possible.

<div>We first learned about Ettie's limb difference during pregnancy at our 20-week scan. As you can imagine, we were filled with worry for the weeks until she was born. What would this mean for Ettie? and would she be able to do the same things as all the other children? But once she was born, our worries were squashed at every milestone. Ettie is a kind, funny, and determined little girl who has never let her limb difference hold her back and has always found her own way to do everything.

<div>Ettie has always shown so much love for her difference and loves celebrating differences. However, as she is getting older, she is becoming increasingly aware of just how different she is. She's becoming more conscious of the stares when out and is sometimes frustrated that she can't do things the same as everyone else. Having the opportunity to receive a Hero Arm would be life changing for Ettie in so many ways. For Ettie, she's excited about being able to do things like handstands, ride her bike without an adaption and tying her shoes. As parents we are excited about these things too, but also all the other ways the Hero Arm will change Ettie's life. We see how strong she is when asked about her limb difference on an almost daily basis and we know it will help her feel more confident so she can continue to embrace her perfectly imperfect self.

<div>When we received the news that Zoey had been accepted on the Big Hero 3 project we were all so emotional, Zoey was so excited and was jumping up and down squealing, it is such an amazing life changing opportunity for her.

<div>We found out about Zoey’s limb difference at the 20-week scan, it was a very scary and emotional time not knowing what to expect. When Zoey was born she saw several specialists but there are no answers about why this happened to Zoey, it’s just one of those things!
</div>
<div>Zoey is now 8 years old, she is a very happy, caring, confident, and adventurous little girl that doesn’t let anything get her down, that being said she is getting to an age where she is becoming more self-conscious and less happy to accept help. Zoey is always on the go and is a member of a gymnastics club, does swimming lessons, and loves trampolining. She enjoys dancing, singing, doing headstands, hula hooping and riding her bike and she is looking forward to being able to use a skipping rope with her new hero hand. Zoey loves anything crafty, drawing, painting, making slime, she enjoys baking and cooking and has recently taught herself a way to crochet.
</div>
<div>Zoey does, however, struggle with some everyday tasks such as tying her laces, using a knife and fork, doing up a zip and carrying a tray. A hero arm will make such a massive difference to her independence enabling her to do all these tasks, as well as her beloved skipping, without relying on help from others.

The Hero Arm also comes with Disney covers which I think look really cool. I would love to turn up at secondary school on the first day and look and feel like a superhero.

<div>Skyliana is a third grader in a dual-language class setting and has been working hard since Kindergarten to become fully biliterate in the English and Spanish languages. She has danced for Studio 11 Dance Company since she was 3 years old and loves to perform ballet, jazz, and hip hop on stage at her recitals! She’s the middle of three children and is truly adored by her big sister, Rilyn, and little brother, Jamesyn and she also has a 3-legged (tri-paw’d) rescued dog named Parker whose front left leg was amputated when he was a pup! When she grows up she wants to be a nurse because she likes to care for others, or an art teacher because she enjoys arts and crafts! Skyliana has proven that our Sky has no limits but she would really benefit from a Hero Arm because it would help her lead a more normal life and that is important as she grows!

<div>Josiah is a very active young boy and enjoys all outdoor activities, any form of exploring, and loves to engage in sports. He is currently involved with a travel soccer team which he began playing at the age of 3. Some other activities that Josiah enjoys doing is skateboarding, swimming, dirt bike riding, wall climbing, and playing video games. He also plays basketball and football for fun but in the future he is hoping he will be able to join a team! We think the Hero Arm would be a great fit for Josiah because he has been desiring a prosthesis that is lighter in weight so that he is able to tolerate it for longer periods of time, create more use due to having more function, and being able to wear it for all seasons due to having more ventilation!

<div>Keegan is fun-loving, adventurous, strong-willed, independent, determined, and full of spunk! Growing up, Keegan’s lucky fin hasn’t stopped him from doing the things he loves. There are times where he struggles doing simple tasks or activities. Zipping up a jack, buttoning his pants, using scissors in art and crafts, carrying the lunch tray at school, balancing on a bike are just a few things he struggles with. With this struggle does come frustration, irritation, and confusion as to why he was born with a lucky fin. As part of Keegan’s independency however, he will always try and figure out a way that works for him. When Keegan saw the Hero Arm at the Lucky Fin Project gathering last year, he was instantly drawn to it, asking question after question, and watching the demonstration on what it can do. The Hero Arm will greatly benefit Keegan’s day to day life, achieving tasks easier without frustration, while also improving his self-confidence!

<div>Growing up I knew I was different and there were things that I wouldn’t be able to do but I still tried. When I became diabetic it was difficult but something I got round and learned.

<div>I got married to Gary in 1998. Had our first child Keiran in 2000 and our second child Rhea in 2004. So I am a mum and also a mum to our 2 dogs Niko and Sabre.  I love taking them out for walks but because they are 2 huskies, boy do they pull on their leads.

Juile's Hero Arm Fund

<div>Brodie is 7 years old, and was born with 1 hand. We found out on his 20 week scan, with no medical explanation.

<div>Whilst we had time to prepare ourselves for this, it was a very hard and traumatic time, especially as he was our first born, with no idea what issues or struggles may arise as he goes through life.
</div>

<div> Brodie has always thrived astonished us with his motivation and drive to do things on his own and find his own way of doing things with just 1 hand, but there are limitations of course. Now he's at the age of really starting to notice he is different from others. We have, at times, noticed his confidence dropping which is very upsetting to see and as his parents we will do anything to help him do everything he wants, and should do, in life. Up until now there has been very little that we could do apart from encourage him and remind him not to give up.

<div> There are lots of adaptive solutions for having only one hand but the prosthetics that are available on the NHS would be more of a hindrance than a help, so when we first saw what open bionics were doing with the hero arms, we knew that this was the greatest option available.
</div>

</div>
<div> Seeing Brodie’s reaction to it we knew that we really needed to rally together and raise the funds for him so he too could be a hero arm kid! As it will be a fully functional robotic arm, which will move when controlled by his arm muscles, it is just the thing he needs to be able to do all the things his friends can do, which he can only dream of doing. He is the most kind, caring and hilarious little boy who lights up the room and puts a smile on everyone's face. He gets questioned a lot about his hand (or lucky fin as we have called it since bith), and, because he also suffered 3rd degree burns on his other hand as a baby, leaving it heavily scarred so both hands he is also questioned about that. We want to be able to give him a hand he can be proud of, and show off to the world so all the questions are no longer a problem for him. We have a few ideas lined up to help raise funds and we will post the updates of those on here, so watch this space!

He wants to be able to play bat and ball, use a knife and fork, put his own toothpaste on his toothbrush, and own a pair of lace up shoes that he can tie himself! <div>In 2008 my life changed. I had a purpose in life I couldn't believe I was going to be a mum for the first time, still young myself I couldn't wait.Every scan was 'normal' and the pregnancy went really well. I was told I was having a boy and that they could see his hand waving during the scan.He arrived safe and well but was soon scooped away from me which I thought is obviously what happens.

<div>After a short while they brought my baby back wrapped in blankets yet my midwife had sadness in her eyes as she told me everything is going to be ok and not to worry (worrying is what I do best)! I was told he had problems with both hands. I initially thought ok....so maybe it's the fact they were bent maybe...Could that even happen!? The midwife explained that he had an absent right hand and the left hand hadn't developed as it should resulting in leaving him with a missing finger having a present thumb, index finger and the other two fingers conjoined at an angle.

<div>Within a few days we were seen by many specialist doctors and consultants. They realised that all limbs were not as they should be this was noted as a form of Ectrodactyly a rare genetic disorder.
</div>
<div>He has and still is undergoing many operations to his feet and legs to make his life a little easier.

<div>There were so many questions I had regarding what we would do.
</div>

</div>
<div>Brooklyn continues to amaze me everyday with all he has achieved with his braveness and determination.Brooklyn really enjoys going out on his bike with friends, spending time gaming, swimming and just generally being a teenager!

<div>Myself and Brooklyn believe that as he has had no aids to help him through life so far and has just managed with help along the way with assistance when needed. This opportunity for the Hero Arm will benefit him in many ways. Despite the obvious of the Hero arm looking amazing but being able to hold object's within both hands and being able to complete daily tasks with ease. As Brooklyn is close to his working life we feel this couldn't have come at a better time where many opportunities can be made to enroll him into the career he would love without any setbacks and to be just like others. <div>Vinnie was born at 27 weeks via an emergency c section, 13 weeks premature and weighing a teeny 880grams. He was born with an infection, an under developed right hand and couldn’t breathe on his own. He was taken straight to NICU. This is where he spent the next 5 and a half months of his life, hooked up to machines, oxygen and having blood transfusions. He was stuck on oxygen until he was 1 years old.

<div>Despite a very rocky start, being the little warrior that he is, he never gave up. He is now 10 years old and is the most adventurous little boy, will try absolutely anything even though he might struggle with his hand, he still has a go. He loves football, jujitsu, wrestling, computer games and riding his bike. He’s so lucky to have this opportunity to be chosen for the Big Hero 3, it’s literally life changing.

<div>On April the 1st 2021, I was admitted into Vanderbilt University Medical Center due to an infection in my surgical sight. While being in Vanderbilt, I also contracted covid. I spent a week in a coma and I was given a 10% chance to make it.

<div>After coming out of the coma I watched my hands and feet die outright in front of me. All my vital organs had failed, and my hands and feet had to die in order for my vital organs to make it. After two months the decision was made to have both hands and feet amputated below the Knee and below the elbow.

I must say I had some amazing doctors that helped me get to where I am today.

Being a quadruple amputee, the first set of myo-electrics were not compatible with being a bilateral  amputee. Two Hero Arms would make all of my dreams come true to be able to pick up a pen and run my fingers through my hair is all I can ever want.

<div> I did have little skin tags where my fingers would be but I used to bite them in frustration when I was younger, so I had surgery at 3 years old to have them removed, now it's much better.

In May 2023 they held a planned Open Day in Birmingham that we went to and I got to try a Hero Arm.  It was amazing and I love it. We're going to be doing many things over the coming months to try and fund it, as my arms are a little short for it at the minute but it gives us a year to raise it and as a family we are determined to do it.

<div>Mum tells me not to say I'm different because everyone is but I feel different and other children have said this to me, upsetting me, I'm hoping this will help me do things others can do and to feel better, I've already had counselling, I've been to seacroft hospital in Leeds and got a Lego hand for my bike but it's uncomfortable and hurts my arm. Lend Louie a Hand Campaign

<div>I would like to introduce our beautiful daughter Isla to you all, Isla was born without her right hand.  This was discovered during a 12 week scan so we were aware of her limb difference from very early on.

<div>Although we do not allow this to define her we know her limb difference makes her who she is, not only is she caring and funny but she is also incredibly determined and resilient. If we have worked anything out as a family with a limb difference it’s that determination is a must! That is why we are reaching out to anyone who can help us ensure our little girl has the opportunity to have her very own Hero Arm through the Open Bionics Foundation.

To watch her face immediately light up as she waved and made the sign for okay for the first time using the Hero Arm brought tears to my eyes so I am going to lead by Isla's example and be just as determined as her in trying my hardest to help her achieve having one at home.

<div>Even if that does mean jumping out of a plane! You have no idea how easy it is to take the little things for granted. She amazes me every day with her ability to simply soldier on. Tying your own shoelaces or opening your own drink may seem simple but to Isla each task has come with its challenges. We always find a solution but to see her use a Hero Arm and have so much control over the movements was such an amazing thing to witness.

<div>As Caitlin’s limb difference is congenital, there is an element of “she doesn’t know any different” and there is a significant truth to this, she is very independent, and she will always figure out her own way of doing most things herself and thrives doing it too. That said, there are many daily mundane tasks we all take for granted that she simply struggles with like; Holding a knife and fork at the same time, holding a drink and carrying a bag, holding a piece of paper and cutting it, carrying a tray “safely”, unwrapping and eating an ice-cream, doing zips on coats and hoodies, holding a mirror while doing her make-up and skipping etc. These are just a few of the things that she struggles with and can take her longer to do which then gets her down and frustrated.

<div>As her parents it breaks our hearts when we see her struggle and we do our best to not just jump in and help her out which is so difficult sometimes, but we know it will only make her more frustrated, but at the same time we are so proud of her perseverance in never giving up trying to do something.

<div>Jayden is 10 years old. He was born with what he calls a “little arm”, which is really a limb difference to his left arm due to Amniotic Band Syndrome. This is where the amniotic fluid creates a band (in Jayden’s case around his arm) and stops the growth, making a shortened limb.

<div>He is an amazing, energetic, sporty boy who takes everything in good humour, just like any other 10-year-old. The difference is he struggles with simple tasks the majority of people rarely have to think about. Cutting up food, tying shoelaces and getting dressed. We all have to do these things daily, but for Jayden they can add up and become a big struggle of overcoming many small challenges every day. A Hero Arm would relieve him.

<div>Keeley was born with her right arm missing and the struggles began as soon as she learned to move. She never crawled. I had to worry about the toys she played with because she would get her arm stuck in holes. She would get her arms stuck in the bars of the cot, so I had to remove some of them. Toddlers are clumsy at the best of time but with Keeley missing her hand, it was difficult for her to stop herself from banging her face, so she would aquire quite a few bruises.

<div>As she grew up day to days activities got more difficult. She felt more self-conscious, her mental health has gotten really bad, and she doesn't go to school, have friends or socialise. I must be there wherever she goes because she will not speak to anyone.

<div>She has had several prosthetic arms off the NHS originally for cosmetic use, then about 6 years ago she had one made that the hand opened and closed which was operated by a strap that went round her back an on her shoulder. She was so happy but after using it for a little while, she suffered pain and burns where the strap was.

<div>I lost my hand in the crash from the mid forearm. I don’t really remember much when we crashed. I was drifting in and out of conciseness. When they finally freed me from the car I was woken up in hospital to sign a disclaimer for them to amputate my hand. I disagree with this procedure. I certainly wasn’t in the frame of mind to make this decision. Waking up after my opp I didn’t know if they had taken my hand or not. The bandage was the size of a football, the nurse told me and I was left alone for a while. I can’t describe how I felt but I can say that my life hasn’t been the same since. That one decision ruined the best part of my life and it’s still having a departmental impact now. It took me a long long time to get my head straight after the accident and the loss of a limb. I couldn’t say that I’ve dealt with it 100% because it still stops me from doing things every day. I don’t think I will ever feel the same in some sense.

<div>I was born with a congenital condition on my left hand, meaning that my fingers and hand didn’t develop correctly in the womb. At the age of 1, my ‘fingers’ were surgically removed as they couldn’t function like regular fingers, putting me at risk of injury to my underdeveloped limb.

<div>I have grown up without the use of a left hand, and because of this there were multiple opportunities I had to miss out on because of my limb difference, such as Go Karting, Residential trips with schools and enjoying video games to their fullest potential.

<div>Because I grew up with a limb difference, I was often taunted that I was the only person in my school with one hand and that I was considered “Strange” because of it. This has left me feeling very self-conscious about my limb difference.

I am very thankful for all my friends and the support from my family but the damage from the bullies was already done.

<div>In the past, I have used adaptive tools for cycling, using cutlery, playing guitar and archery. I have never used cosmetic prosthetics- because, funny story, as a child, I visited Southmead hospital and saw the prosthetics displayed in a wooden wardrobe using screws to prop them up. I remember believing that the screw had to go into my arm, so I was scared off from a young age!

<div>Over the past year and a half, I have been on a journey to recover my health. I have been using Functional Patterns (FP) methodology, which is a training system that orientates corrective exercises around standing, walking, running, and throwing as these are movements humans have evolved to perform as well as working with FP practitioner Bobby Filer at Bristol Biomechanics (shout out Bobby!).

<div>So far, this has been completely life-changing. My values in life have shifted, and health and functionality are my number one priority. 
</div>

<div>I have made significant progress in a short period and have improved a lot of health problems such as back/neck/chest/wrist/knee pain. Also frequent and severe migraines (which I have dealt with for several years) heart palpitations, my anxiety is reduced, my mood is more stable, and I am handling stress better – but there is still a lot of work to be done! 
</div>

<div>However, there are some missing pieces to the puzzle of developing my right side. I am hoping with a Hero Arm, I will learn to use a multitude of different tools and FP techniques fundamental movements, such as throwing with my right arm and better integrating my right arm into running and walking. This would really boost my progress and provide my right arm with the length and functionality needed to create more symmetry within my body.

<div>My life goal is to make the right side as functional as possible and take control of my situation. After physiotherapy, researching online, yoga, and all the rest, I hit a low in my health. I had felt like a victim of my congenital disabilities and like there was no solution. But now I am making lasting changes, and my right arm muscles are growing like never!  A Hero arm would change everything for me and allow me to grow beyond the limits I was born with.

<div>In addition, when I reflect on my life so far, I realise how much my self-image, personality and social behaviour has been affected by my disabilities. I’ve had feelings of vulnerability and weakness when a stranger stares at my arm or when meeting new people and seeing myself in the mirror as an unfinished person –I don’t mean to sound dramatic, but this is my reality, and I’m determined to improve it.

<div>If I was wearing a cool, sci-fi looking Hero Arm, with a personally chosen design that represents who I am and how I feel, there is no way I could feel inferior! The Hero Arm is not designed to look like a realistic second hand; it’s designed to be cool!

<div>It’s really mind-boggling stuff because I’ve never had a right hand in my life! For example, I have learnt to peel vegetables using a knife instead of a handheld peeler and thought to myself:

<div>There are hundreds of everyday interactions with my surroundings in which I have adapted to having one hand that I could re-learn with two hands. It would be life-changing for my physical health; as a result, my mental health, self-image, confidence, and my everyday life.

<div>When I was born, my left hand didn’t form as it should, this is because when I was inside my mum’s tummy, the blood couldn’t circulate properly to my left hand and it couldn’t form as it should.

<div>It first came to me that I was different to others was when I started primary school. I realised that people would look at me more and stare at my left hand and I would get questions that I had not had or heard before, it was weird at the start as I had young and older people asking me questions saying why do I have a different hand, some of the older kids would laugh and be mean. I found it hard when young kids said that my hand looks like a foot, I don’t see how and I understand that they are only kids but it can be very upsetting.

<div>My parents and I then started to go to the Mobility Centre at Nottingham City Hospital, where they started fitting me with prosthetics that just looked like a normal hand, they looked kinda realistic but it still wasn’t right for me. The fingers wouldn’t move unless you used force to move them manually but then I didn’t want to force them as I was scared they was going to break.

<div>They also made me a bike sleeve, as I loved riding bikes and it was hard for me to get a strong grip, but they used to get very warm and it made my arm sweaty and it would come out in a rash and I had to reduce the time I went out for a ride. I also got a attachment to help me learn how to play a guitar (still needs plenty of practice).

<div>In late 2018 early 2019 we contacted TeamUnlimited run by Steven Davies, we saw the work that they did making 3D printed hands and we got in touch to see if it was possible for me to have one. I soon got one and the arm was made in my favourite colour yellow and had my motto ‘Always believe’ printed on it. I loved the hand but sadly my arm grew too big for it. I really liked it but the fingers couldn’t move individually so I couldn’t quite make my hand look like a love heart or a thumbs up shape.

<div>I would like a hero arm as when I look at people I see them doing stuff that I find hard. Sometimes it’s hard trying to fit in, not with my personality but how I look. Sometimes people find it hard to be friends with me, mainly when we are hanging around with their friends as they don’t want to be embarrassed because of my left hand. When I look at people and I watch them doing stuff, that I can’t do because I haven’t got a left hand, it can be upsetting inside. At times it can be hard when l have to do an activity or when family or friends would like to hold my hand and they can’t hold my right hand as I’m using it so they have to hold my left hand and they are scarred of hurting it or don’t know how to hold it.

<div>It will help me in different kinds of ways. Some being as simple as using a knife and fork at the same time, being able to cut my tea or hold more than one thing knowing it won’t fall. When I’m getting dressed I won’t have to struggle fastening my buttons or zips. Hopefully it can help when I’m climbing and using ropes or chains and they won’t rub on my arm and make it sore. Hopefully it will help me riding my bike and playing sports like tennis. I have a guitar and want to learn how to play the electric keyboard because at the moment I find it hard pressing the keys. Also hopefully it will give me a firm grip on anything I try to hold.

<div>What I’m looking forward to do with my hero arm is to do the basic shapes that I mentioned above saying like doing a love heart shape or a thumbs up or even play Rock Paper Scissors. I will also look forward to showing it of to my friends and be able to hold my head high. I also look forward to holding things so I’ll have less chance of dropping stuff. In the past I’ve had just a normal prosthetics. Simple hands and fingers that couldn't move unless you used force on them. I also had bike sleeve attachments so I could ride my bike and I have them still now but I’m not able to use for long periods of time.

<div>The reason why they haven’t quite worked for me is because the simple hands from the mobility centre in Nottingham made my hand all hot and sweaty, as they had like a foam cast then the actual hand. The 3D Hand from TeamUnlimited hand is to small for me now. The difference from my normal prosthetics to a hero arm is the fact that the hero arm can do so much more like, being able to move the fingers individually and make funny shapes I.e the thumbs up or a heart. I think wearing a hero arm would feel weird to start of with but when I start wearing it more, it will feel fine in terms of how it feels physically. I also think it will make me feel happier as I can do more stuff and I also think it will make me feel like I fit in a bit more, I know it will make it more obvious that I haven’t got a proper left hand but knowing that I have fingers that can move and all that, it would be so great.

<div>I think at first it might take a while for people to get use to seeing me with a hero arm as they might not of seen one before or seen close up or in real life. I think I might get some questions and snide comments but that is nothing I’m not used to. All my life I’ve had a partial left hand. I live with my mummy and daddy, my sister Lola who is 10 and I have 3 older sisters and 1 brother who live in their own houses so, I am the youngest of 6!! I love swimming, drawing, playing with my friends, riding my bike, walking our 2 dogs, playing on my Nintendo Switch and Jiu Jitsu. I am competing in my first Jiu Jitsu competition in November and I’m so excited!

<div>We are soooo excited at the minute because we’ve been asking and asking and asking for a Hero arm from Open Bionics and finally our fund-raising page is now ready.

<div>These arms are awesome, we first saw them at an event for limb different children in the Summer. The fingers move and we got to play Jenga using the Hero arms - they wouldn’t let us take them home though!

<div>We came up with a plan and got our mums to take us to an open day at Open Bionics where we tried out the sensors on our muscles - wow! We made the fingers on the arms move with the electrodes they put on our little arms - game over mums- just think what we can do with these arms - own nail polish, style my hair, computer games, building models - we really need one of these!

<div>Having a little arm is cool and we’ve always found our own way of doing things. Sometimes it takes us longer or we have to say ‘can you give me a hand’ please. Some things we use our feet for, some things we have adaptations to help us, but these arms would make us so proud and even more confidence.
</div>

<div>We have grown-ups like us who we look up to and we want to be that for other children. We’d love to show other children they can be anything they want to be - even Bionic! Stick with us kids we will teach you our asking and asking technique. It can sometimes be hard being limb different but by showing we are proud of our little arms we are hoping it will help other children.
</div>

<div>Hello everyone, I'm Zoe, Cian’s mam. Before I start I just wanted to thank everyone for their support so far on getting the ball rolling on the journey of getting Cian his very own Hero Arm.

<div>So let's start from the very beginning. On my 20 week anomaly scan me and Jamie, Cian’s dad were told that the fingers on Cians right hand had not developed. After many more scans and hospital appointments we were told that Cian could have what was called ‘amniotic band syndrome’ which happens when the fibrous band of the amniotic sack gets tangled around a developing fetus. But still to this day we are unsure of what the actual cause was.

<div>Fast forward until when Cian was 5 years old, myself and Jamie got in touch with the Cardiff Metropolitan University where Cian was very lucky to be one of the first little boys in Wales to receive a 3D printed prosthetic hand.

<div>At first the prosthetic hand was amazing. To be able to see Cian pick things up with his right hand was so great to see but as time went on Cian found the prosthetic very uncomfortable. In order to move the fingers, Cian would have to move his wrist up and down to open and close the fingers and as Cian loved to wear his prosthetic out to play while riding his bike and scooter, as i'm sure you can image, holding his wrist down to keep the fingers gripped around the handlebars was very uncomfortable for Cian. Luckily the Hero Arm has a freeze application built into the hand so this would take away this issue.

<div>Now let’s fast forward to the present day. Cian is now 11 years old and just about to start comprehensive school. Cian’s favourite things to do are playing on his Xbox, being out with his mates on his scooter and bike and he is also a fantastic football player. He plays for his local football team Ely Valley FC. Cian is also a massive supporter of Cardiff City Football Club and Manchester City Football Club. It would be great if we could get their support with our crowdfunding.

Cian's Crowdfunding for a Hero Arm

Hi my name is Michael. I live in a small town in Hampshire called Fleet. Between 2013 and 2017 l had both my legs amputated and both my hands removed through my wrists. I have set up this crowdfunding campaign to try and help me buy a prosthetic hand that will definitely improve the quality of my life! Any support at all means the absolute world and if I can do anything in return of the donation I wouldn’t hesitate!<br /><br /><br /><img src="https://d2g8igdw686xgo.cloudfront.net/59870431_1631285884870025_r.jpeg" alt="59870431_1631285884870025_r.jpeg" width="100%" media_type="3" /><br /><br />I had a lovely childhood, many outdoor pursuits, fishing etc. but when I was 11 years old I was diagnosed with type 1 Diabetes. It was 1978 and in those days was a bit of a game changer. The technology wasn’t what it's like today. I spent quite a lot of time in hospital but we just got on with it. The whole family mucked in.<br /><br />I started having problems with ulcers in my mouth then on my legs in the mid to late 90s. I was in and out of hospital in severe pain taking all sorts of pills and potions. I was finally diagnosed with Behcet's syndrome. It's a rare autoimmune condition. It's a horrible disease. It is a (chronic) Inflammatory condition caused by blood vessel inflammation which affects and damages both the arteries and veins. <br /><br />After lots of different immune suppressant drugs the only one that worked was prednisolone which has lots of not very nice side effects. To cut a long story short between 2012 and 2017 l had 20 to 30 operations resulting in having both legs amputated and both hands amputated. It’s the first time I’ve actually written that down. I'm finding it quite difficult. <br /><br /><img src="https://d2g8igdw686xgo.cloudfront.net/59870431_1631286002317306_r.jpeg" alt="59870431_1631286002317306_r.jpeg" width="100%" media_type="3" /><br />My family would describe me as someone who doesn’t give up.<br /><br />I seem to find I'm always searching for ways to improve my quality of life and have something to look forward to. I enquired about a Hero arm about 2 years ago. I was really interested but due to the financial side of things I was unable to proceed. I think and hope a Hero arm would greatly improve my quality of life. The list is endless, l used to love fishing l would be able to hold a fishing rod, just being able to pick things up with my right hand. Hold a fork. Hold an apple. Hold my dogs lead. I used to do a lot of painting and decorating. I'm a keen gardener, so being able to hold tools would mean a lot. I currently have a carbon hook on my left arm which l am extremely dexterous with and I have an aesthetic hand on my right arm. I’ve tried an myo electric hand but it didn't fit properly and was incredibly heavy. I've worked in every type of building trade including ground work, landscape gardening etc, for the last 25 years I've worked as a maintenance, groundsman jack of all trades at a private school, and my employers have been really good to me and repaid my loyalty by keeping my on as a part time gardener. This has helped my rehabilitation and mental health enormously. <br /><br /><img src="https://d2g8igdw686xgo.cloudfront.net/59870431_1631286086236866_r.jpeg" alt="59870431_1631286086236866_r.jpeg" width="100%" media_type="3" /><br />The Hero arm seems to be very lightweight, versatile and stylish. I would feel a million dollars walking around with it on, probably showing off a bit. I ran over and it was a real robotic superhero arm called 'Hero Arm' made by Open Bionics. Jacob's Iron Man Hero Arm fund

<p>My name is Dani and welcome to my page. If you’re not big into reading then you can get to know me a little better through my campaign video, but if you stick <br />with me here, I will summarise myself for you the best I can.<br /><br /><br /><br /><iframe media_type="0" media_id="TglFwjQWUhc" class="youtube-replace" title="YouTube video player" style="margin-bottom:20px;width:560px;height:315px;" src="//www.youtube.com/embed/TglFwjQWUhc/?rel=0" frameborder="0" allowfullscreen="1"></iframe><br />I’m here because I am hoping to achieve the dream of becoming partly bionic. I <br />was born with an upper limb deficiency (the lower part of my left arm and hand <br />are missing), which I believe gives me the perfect opportunity to get started. Sure, growing up with one hand had its challenges, but mostly it taught me that with some determination, you can still accomplish your goals despite most adversities. <p>I have gone through life living by this attitude, and it has got me so far. Unfortunately, my body hasn’t been loving my “throw yourself into anything and see how it <br />goes” technique and I am left with a lot of aches and pains from many acute <br />injuries and repetitive strains. My left side is quite underdeveloped as a result of <br />having to overuse my right hand and arm and I am prone to back pain, migraines, <br />and spinal curvature because of this. I am under treatment with private <br />physiotherapy and I do what I can to equalise my strength through exercise, but <br />my efforts are currently outweighed by the strain of everyday tasks such as <br />carrying shopping, cooking meals, or even leaning at a funny angle to type this <br />message to you all!
</p>

<p>I have a lot of passions and hobbies, all of which will be enhanced by using the <br />Hero Arm. Yoga and meditation have become a big part of my life and are <br />essential tools for improving my mental health. I also tend to express myself <br />creatively, whether that’s through sketching, digital art, or journaling. At the<br />weekend, I will spend my time hiking with my dog Lily, seeing my close friends, <br />cooking for everyone - just lately it’s all about perfecting pizza!

<p>I see the Hero Arm by Open Bionics as being a gateway into a new way of life <br />(please check out their social media linked below for further insights into the <br />incredible innovation they provide). I cannot stress enough how much of a <br />positive affect this will have on me gaining more independence. Ever since I tried <br />the training arm at their offices in Bristol, I have been unbelievably excited to <br />experience having two hands to see what all of the fuss is about. It may sound <br />somewhat boring, but I am most excited to use it for everyday tasks which a lot of people may take for granted. As I’ve already mentioned, I haven’t had the problem of being restricted over the years and have, in general, managed to adapt tasks to my own capabilities. The Hero Arm is going to allow me to do things the easy way, and honestly, I am looking forward to coasting for a while.

<p>Even though I say I’m looking forward to doing things the easy way, I’m not going <br />to sit here and expect the money to just come rolling in. I plan on doing things <br />along the way to drive extra fundraising, and to hopefully keep you all <br />entertained. A group of friends and I will be climbing Mount Snowdon in a couple of weeks, and I have a goal of walking the 154km West Highland Way in the near<br />future (yes, I enjoy walking). I am open to suggestions and would welcome your <br />input with more ideas on things to do!

<p>I’m 30 years old, I was born with one hand so I’ve never known any different. My grandma was also born with one arm which is quite rare to have happened twice in one family. l enjoy baking with my son, walking my dog, swimming and riding motorbikes or quads.

<p>Everyone who knows me knows I’ve never tried to let my disability stop me, there are things I’m unable to do which I rely on my supportive family and friends for, but when I can I always try and prove to myself and others I can do it, it just may not be the conventional way, but I’ll try!

<p>From a young age I’ve had a prosthetic, my mum used to send me to school with it on and I’d leave it under my chair all day, which scared a few supply teachers! 
</p>
<p>I’ve always found prosthetics more of a hindrance. 
</p>
<p>I never used to be self conscious about my arm so didn’t need to wear a prosthetic to try and look normal but as I’ve got older I’ve become more self conscious.  
</p>

<p>I’ve used myo electrics which are heavy and make my arm sore, the're hard to put on and are limited to one grip which is why the Hero arm would be so much better!
</p>
<p>I’d be proud to show it off, it doesn’t try look like a normal hand and the design can be as bold as you like. 
</p>

</p>
<p>Owning a Hero would boost my confidence. I would challenge myself to learn tasks with two hands. It would also help with balancing my body out as I suffer with pain in my left side probably from years of overcompensating. 
</p>

<p>I was lucky enough to visit the open bionics open day and trial the arm which made me want one even more. The design is cool, functional, lightweight and the ability to bend each finger and move the thumb and switch between different settings is awesome and as I’ve said before something I’d be proud to show off! They are just under £10k which is a lot of money but considered to other multi grip prosthetics that is the most affordable and with the support of crowdfunding and your help I really hope you can help me achieve this dream.

<p>Looking at others with a Hero arm and the tasks they can do has inspired me to look for something to support me with daily tasks and boost my confidence.  I would love to hold a hair dryer and to do my own hair!

When I went to the open bionics lab last week I was amazed that these hands exist, and now I’m buzzing with ideas of what it will help me with. For example just being able to hold my hair dryer easier will make that process quicker, I mean the amount of times I drop it is so annoying!!<br /><br /><br />If you don’t know a Hero Arm is a multi grip bionic arm. It is a time when as a nation we are all more aware of disability and accepting this and promoting opportunity .The Hero Arm is not available on the NHS and so we are hoping to add to our own contributions through fund raising events.
