<div>The fight is still on and the struggle is real. Nayna is currently on weekly chemo infusions and Keytruda immunotherapy is added every 3 weeks. She is also getting scans every 3 months to check for progression. All of these things are costly and with her amazing husband being the only one working, it's impossible to cover all the medical bills (hers and his) and keep a roof over their head. And that's why we are here, to help.

<div>If you have seen updates from Nayna or her husband Dana, you know that her fight has unfortunately gotten harder. After finding cancer had spread to her lungs in Feb and having that lobe removed, she has had to return to iv chemo weekly and the addition of immunotherapy in hopes of killing any rogue cells and keeping any new cancer at bay. She is now considered Stage 4.

<div>Triple Negative Breast Cancer is known to be the most aggressive, hardest to treat and most likely to return. Stage 4 TNBC with metastasis to the lungs has not only been a tough fight on her physically, but mentally, emotionally and financially as well. You can not imagine the co-pays or the growing mountain of bills. It's even harder when there is only one income and an insurance company they have to fight with for everything.

With the results, he will end up needing 1 to 4 rounds of chemotherapy. While looking at the CT scans he had taken for his surgery, they also noticed he has PKD and many cysts on his liver. We are looking for help covering his medical bills during this time.

<div>For Thaiera, a woman of color who is a city farmer and food educator, a fun first-trip to Maine turned into a nightmare of terror and unplanned expenses at the hands of the Brunswick police. She is raising funds to cover a $3,000 retainer for an attorney to represent her.

<div><strong>Who is Thaiera?</strong>
</div>
<div>Thaiera (a Black urban farmer <a href="https://www.thespruceeats.com/what-is-urban-farming-5188341" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener"><em>[1]</em></a>, chef, and educator <a href="https://pilotlightchefs.org/what-we-do/what-is-food-education" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener"><em>[2]</em></a>) and her partner Alejandro (a Latinx urban farmer and artist) live in New York City. They asked for pseudonyms because they feel embarrassed about their circumstances.
</div>

</div>
<div><strong>How was the Trip <em>Supposed</em> to Go?</strong>
</div>
<div>Per Thaiera, "we planned the trip just in gratitude for making it to the end of the summer. I’ve never planned a road trip or done something like this, but it seemed like it’d be straightforward and fun, and <strong>last year I’d promised my friend who works at the [farm in Rockport] that I'd come to visit them this summer and am pretty serious about keeping my word</strong>."

<div>Thaiera has had her driver's license for a few years, but since she lives in the city, she most commonly uses public transportation. Even so, "at this point <strong>I feel comfortable driving and do my best to be a safe and considerate driver</strong>, making a 7+ hour road trip was a new driving milestone I hadn’t done but thought I’d done plenty of research on to do well."
</div>

</div>
<div><strong>What Actually Happened?</strong>
</div>
<div>On August 27th, Thaiera and Alejandro were on their way to Rockport late at night on Route 1. As they approached Brunswick, flashing lights appeared behind them. <strong>Since she was doing nothing wrong, Thaiera did not anticipate they were signaling for her and tried to move out of the way.</strong> When the lights did not pass her by, she realized she was being asked to pull over and looked for a safe place.
</div>
<div><br />
</div>
<div><strong>But she was never given a chance to pull over safely.</strong> Instead, two more police cars suddenly appeared and threw out a spike strip, ruining all four tires and forcing her car to a stop. <strong>Shortly after, Thaiera and Alejandro were terrified to see Brunswick police officers pointing guns at them.</strong> The officers ordered Thaiera out of the car, handcuffed her, and issued drunk driving tests (which she passed). They said she was being arrested because "she had her highbeams on for too long and drove without pulling over."
</div>

</div>
<div>The officers then handcuffed and interviewed Alejandro, who clarified their traveling destination and mentioned their interest in farming. One officer aggressively responded, "Oh is that a marijuana farm?" When Alejandro stated, "I don’t understand why we’re being treated like this," <strong>an officer said, "we’ll let you go out of the handcuffs because you’re nice - otherwise we’d just leave you on the highway</strong>." Thaiera and Alejandro's entire car was searched, then they were taken separately to the Brunswick police station. 
</div>
<div><br />
</div>
<div>At the police station, Thaiera had <em>another</em> sobriety test while Alejandro was asked if they had $60 for bail. When Alejandro provided the money and requested a receipt, the officer stated they would have to wait until morning for a clerk. 
</div>
<div><br />
</div>
<div>Finally, Thaiera and Alejandro managed to find a friend-of-a-friend's place to stay (so stressed they were unable to sleep) until morning when they could find their car and buy new tires.
</div>
<div><br />
</div>
<div>Looking back, Thaiera commented, "<strong>We really tried to plan for everything, and make sure we had any legal documents ready like the registration and be alert/proactive about anything</strong>. If I’d known about the high beams, I would’ve turned them off, but it was really hard to see in that neighborhood without them. And having my high beams on was the last thing I’d ever have imagined getting pulled over for if anything, especially in a dark town I’ve never been to."
</div>

</div>
<div><strong>Why was this Racist?</strong>
</div>
<div>In the words of one of her friends, "It is a terrible thing to fear inviting our Black and Brown loved ones to Maine when dangerous incidents like this occur." This incident was racist for many reasons -
</div>
<div><br />
</div>
<ul>
<li><strong>The premise.</strong> Maine Statute 2067 says that headlights should be dimmed when a car "approaches an oncoming vehicle within 500 feet or follows a vehicle within 300 feet," but I don't see anything that limits the length of time high beams can be used. <a href="https://www.mainelegislature.org/legis/statutes/29-a/title29-Asec2067.html" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener"><em>[3]</em></a> Stopping someone for having their high beams on too long sounds like a pretense.
</li>
</ul>
<div><br />
</div>
<ul>
<li><strong>The spike strip.</strong> Can you imagine this happening to you? I can't fathom putting out a spike strip unless the driver is about to hit someone or is recklessly running away. Thaiera wasn't even speeding (otherwise you know she would have gotten a ticket for that too).
</li>
</ul>
<div><br />
</div>
<ul>
<li><strong>The drawn weapons and use of handcuffs.</strong> With all the police shootings of people of color in the news, can you imagine how horrifying that must have been? And handcuffs? Thaiera and Alejandro didn't do anything to deserve feeling shamed and helpless like that.
</li>
</ul>
<div><br />
</div>
<ul>
<li><strong>The search.</strong> Thaiera and Alejandro didn't mention probable cause, impoundment, consent, or a warrant. I'm not a lawyer, but I'm pretty sure at least one of the above is required before a cop can legally search your car. <a href="https://www.aclumaine.org/en/know-your-rights/know-your-rights-police-encounters" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener"><em>[4]</em></a>
</li>
</ul>

</div>
<ul>
<li><strong>The arrest.</strong> Why was Thaiera arrested, rather than simply given tickets just like any typical traffic stop??
</li>
</ul>
<div><br />
</div>
<ul>
<li><strong>The comment about "marijuana farm."</strong> Not long ago, the ACLU published an article about racial disparities in marijuana arrests. <a href="https://www.aclu.org/news/criminal-law-reform/a-tale-of-two-countries-racially-targeted-arrests-in-the-era-of-marijuana-reform" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener"><em>[5]</em></a> Was it coincidence that the officer's mind jumped to marijuana while talking to a person of color... or was it unconscious bias?
</li>
</ul>
<div><br />
</div>
<ul>
<li><strong>The implication that Alejandro would be left on the road in handcuffs</strong>. If the officer was joking, this was extremely disrespectful; if serious, they would be endangering a person they're sworn to protect.
</li>
</ul>
<div><br />
</div>
<div>I've been pulled over various times in my life and even gotten a couple tickets, but on several occasions the officer was kind enough to let me go with a courteous "reminder" to watch my speed or renew my registration. And in other cases, a cop car followed me briefly but moved on. <strong>Maybe you've had similar experiences... if you're white like me.</strong>
</div>
<div><br />
</div>
<div>The ACLU article I mentioned earlier also states that police "often target people (for stop and frisk, search, and arrest) based on their actual or perceived race rather than reasonable suspicion of criminal activity." Similarly, a Stanford research report concludes, "we find that police require less suspicion to search black and Hispanic drivers than white drivers. This double standard is evidence of discrimination." <a href="https://openpolicing.stanford.edu/findings" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener"><em>[6]</em></a>
</div>
<div><br />
</div>
<div>At first I wondered, if it was so dark out, how could the cops have seen Thaiera and Alejandro's complexions before they threw out the spike strip? Then I remembered - they can look you up by your license plate!
</div>
<div><br />
</div>
<div><strong>If Thaiera and Alejandro were white, their experience would have been very different.</strong> And that's not equitable. The Maine Civil Rights Act "prohibits bias based on race, color, religion, ancestry, national origin, gender, physical or mental disability or sexual orientation" and "all people living, working, or visiting in the State of Maine are protected." <a href="https://www.maine.gov/ag/civil_rights/faq.shtml" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener"><em>[7]</em></a>
</div>
<div><br />
</div>
<div><strong>How did this Affect Thaiera?</strong>
</div>
<div>As you can guess, Thaiera is completely turned off from long-distance driving. And she's extremely nervous about ever visiting Maine again. Regrettably, she must do exactly that - <strong>on top of the mental trauma from that night in Brunswick, Thaiera must face the stress of more travel and a court appearance in November</strong>.
</div>
<div><br />
</div>
<div>There's a financial toll as well. The expenses of August 27th add up like this:

</div>

<div>Some good news is that Thaiera has connected with a lawyer who can ensure her voice is heard throughout the challenging legal process. <strong>Some <em>not-so-good</em> news is that the lawyer needs a $3,000 retainer before they can start planning the case.</strong>
</div>

<div><strong>How can We Help?</strong>
</div>
<div>First, to the people who have contributed so far: Thank you so much for reaching out to help Thaiera and Alejandro. Your caring has raised close to two thousand dollars, for which they are incredibly grateful. Per Thaiera:

<div>In October 2021, our amazing Mira was diagnosed with lung cancer and underwent surgery to remove the affected lobe at NYU Langone Tisch hospital. During a long and difficult recovery from surgery, in August 2022 we received the devastating news that the cancer has returned at stage four. Mira started receiving chemotherapy on September 9th, and is understandably extremely scared for the future. Without great means ourselves, we have made the difficult decision to ask friends, allies and kind-hearted strangers for your support to help with Mira’s healthcare, support, and wellbeing.

<div>Marc here. So, let me tell you about a shit week. On Wednesday last week, my wife got a biopsy of her cervix to check for possible cancer. On Friday night, after the doctor's office was closed, the results were emailed to her. It read that they had found squamous cell carcinoma in situ. <div>That’s a lot of information to take in over your weekend, so of course we took it... poorly. My wife, who goes by Glamblkgirlmagic online, couldn’t work and I canceled all my streams, which is a large part of my income right now while I’m in college to become a nurse. We didn’t want to say too much except to a few close friends and family because we were waiting to get more information from her doctor. So, we got ahold of them today.

<div>A secondary thing that was going on before I continue there is that we have been struggling financially. Like many American families, we relied on the child tax credit advance to make ends meet and with me getting fired from my job in January and also we never fully recovered from glams last health event, which was her gallbladder being removed. We’ve been living off of payday loans and dying by them coming out every paycheck, so keep that in mind as I get into today.

<div>We had done our taxes and thought we were out of the water when we saw our refund, but due to a lot of miscommunications and lack of funding to the IRS, tax preparers had not been able to adjust to the new rules from the stimulus and advanced child credits, it was reduced by $2,800 (the majority of the refund). That was what I found out today after being on the phone with the IRS.

<div>As to glams condition, we finally talked to her doctor today and the good news is we caught it early enough to be stage 0 and not require chemo or radiation therapy. The bad news is she's going to require surgery and a portion of her cervix will need to be removed. And that bring us to where we are now.

<div>With our money problems, her missing work due to the news of having cancer, and her future surgery and recovery, we are asking for help. The number we came up with was $5000. This is meant to include what we didn’t get from our tax refund that will cover the bills we’re behind on, getting out of the payday loan trap, and her recovery. The last amount is to finally pursue something I have pushed back.

<div>I have a condition called Barrett's esophagus that requires regular upper endoscopies every few years to make sure I, myself, don’t have cancer. Last time I went in, they were alarmed by a polyp and reduced it to yearly. Unfortunately, my insurance doesn’t cover the cost of that and I owe over $900 to them for my last upper GI and would have to pay that amount to get another one, so some of that will go towards making sure that I don’t have to worry about a cancer diagnosis while also dealing with my wifes.

Cervical Cancer prevention surgery recovery

My grandfather, Raymond “Poppy” Duvall, passed away on Thursday, March 3rd, 2022. He fought a long, hard battle with COVID-19 but unfortunately could not recover from the damage it caused. He was a kind, generous, and loving man that cared deeply for his family who miss him dearly. His loss has created unimaginable hardship for his daughter (my mother), Tina Hitt. She has spent nearly the last ten years of her life as his caregiver while also raising two young children and trying to take care of herself. She is one of the most selfless people I know and right now, she needs our help. My grandfather’s death was unexpected and the financial burden that was left behind is too heavy for her to carry on her own. Suddenly being solely responsible for the mortgage and utility bills for the family home, car payments and car insurance, and all other life expenses for her and her children, she is overburdened. <div>For the past year and a half, my dad has been out of work. He works as a computer programmer (hard code, the old style stuff) in a field that is subject to constant layoffs. He has been laid off of nearly every job he's been in often due to the companies having to save money and his category of expertise being a dying field. I can't count how many interviews he has been on for the past year, but all have ended with rejections mostly due to them wanting a hipper and younger crowd. The last job he had was a contract job that promised him til January but laid him off in September. He is 66 years old and has severe back problems that keep him from doing almost any physical labor.

<div>I work as a barista in order to pay off my student loans and recently took up a second job helping in home demolition on the side in order to help my family pay their mortgage. My boyfriend also helps with monthly payments. My mom works overtime at a daycare but barely gets by. My sister is handicapped due to complex ptsd and is unable to work, drive or function properly. She is an incredible person who has been through so much, including a very traumatic experience 9 years ago that has made the past 9 years for her a living Hell. Currently, she wrestles with depression and somatic episodes in which her body spontaneously slips into a coma-like state. I stay here in order to watch her when my parents are not around. Needless to say, we're trying our best.

<div>But it's not enough. We'll be losing the house within months and it's honestly incredibly difficult to process. I've spent my entire 30-year life here. I've gone through so many life milestones here. It's one thing to leave the nest willingly. But to have the place you've felt so comfortable in -- The one as familiar to you as the back of your hand -- be ripped away without a second thought as if it was never truly your home... It hurts.

I nearly declined to make this page, but thanks to some incredible friends, I've been convinced that there is nothing wrong with asking for help. I don't know to what extent we can mitigate this situation but everything counts. Even if we can pay off more payments to give my dad more time to possibly find a job... Anything really. My parents are currently tapping into their 401k in order to pay the mortgage. It's bad.
