<div>Dustin was an LA County Explorer (Post 6) from 2010-2013. After graduating high school, Dustin was hired by AMR and worked in the Santa Clarita Region. In 2016, Dustin was hired by West Metro Fire &amp; Rescue. Additionally, he was a proud member of IAFF Local 1309 for 4 years before being hired by the Los Angeles County FD in June of 2020 where he has selflessly served the citizens of East Palmdale out of Fire Station 93 as a Fireman/Medic.

<div>Dustin, 34 years old, resides in Goodyear, AZ with his wife Mariah, who as previously mentioned, is pregnant with their first child, a baby boy. Dustin and Mariah recently celebrated their first wedding anniversary together. Currently, Dustin is undergoing aggressive chemotherapy through the Mayo Clinic in Scottsdale and receiving palliative care at his home in Goodyear.

<div>Jamie recently said to me, “Mel….I will never forget the phone call. The doctor said to us, ‘You have a large mass in your brain.’ Words no one ever wants to hear. In that instant, I lost my hearing and couldn’t even feel my body…. tears started streaming down my face. Oof, my heart stopped, and I simultaneously felt the fullness of love for him and the sharp sting of all that might be lost.”

<div>If you’ve met Joey (43, his entire adult life has been dedicated to a balanced, healthy lifestyle), you know he is the kindest, calmest, and most patient human. In the Dixon household, since the birth of their daughter, Joey has been the primary caregiver. He does the shopping, all the meals, school pick-ups and drop-offs, and the taking care of things around the house (while Jamie works). However, all this has been paused as he has been diagnosed with something called AVM.
</div>
<div><br />
</div>
<div><strong>AVM is a tangle of blood vessels that irregularly connects arteries and veins, disrupting blood flow and oxygen circulation to the brain.</strong> Most people are born with this (it’s not genetic) It never goes away, and most people don’t know they have it until it ruptures, causing stroke, seizure, or worse. The images currently show a high risk of rupture in two different places. If that happens, <em>he could die.</em> This reality, and all its sadness, grief, and fear, is felt inside everyone.
</div>
<div><br />
</div>
<div>Last week, they experienced complications after undergoing an imaging procedure, and there was damage sustained to his femoral artery. He then had to have a very high-risk emergency superficial femoral artery bypass. It will take 6-12 weeks to heal from this first and unexpected emergency surgery.
</div>
<div><br />
</div>
<div>This was a huge setback, as he was supposed to get brain surgery THIS WEEK. The mass is too large to remove it at the moment. So, he will first need as many as three embolization brain surgeries to try and shrink it before they can attempt a final brain surgery to remove it completely. Each of these surgeries is super high risk with serious side effects and/or complications, including stroke, seizure nerve damage, etc. BUT if they don’t do these surgeries, then it could hemorrhage at any moment with similar or even worse outcomes. (a ticking time bomb).
</div>

</div>
<div><strong>What now? </strong>Joey and Jamie have a minimum of six months to 1 year of surgeries ahead—recovery, more surgeries, more recovery. During most of this time, Joey will be unavailable to work and will most likely be flown to Germany to perform the surgeries all out of pocket. There will undoubtedly be many more unforeseen expenses. They will need as much help as possible while Jamie steps into the role of full-time caretaker of her husband and daughter while continuing to work full-time. This page will help support them in this journey!

<div>They moved to Portugal 3 years ago, in July of 2021, for a different life experience. They wanted to give their daughter a life of speaking many languages, immersed in new cultures, experiencing Europe, and obtaining a 2nd passport. Like anything, this was a challenge, yet after many months, their visas were accepted, they packed up their life into 15 suitcases and flew across the world to move to a country they had never even visited.

<div>As many of you know, our baby girl was in the hospital for 21 nights during most of November. To begin, we would like to express our gratitude to all our dear friends and family. Your support has made an unforgettable impact on this experience. We continue to receive a lot of love from you all, and for many who have asked how you can help, we are using this platform to share in more detail our story and provide a way for our people to contribute to our family’s journey in healing from this all.

<div>We brought our Lennon into the ER on November 8th with a fever, and from there, everything happened very fast. She was in septic shock and began to have respiratory distress. Thankfully the doctors moved quickly, and they were able to get her stable. Lots of tests were done to determine what was wrong. They tried for a spinal puncture but could not get a sample. She was given oxygen and antibiotics and transferred in an ambulance to the pediatric ICU at UCLA Ronald Reagan. Eventually, the doctors found signs of infection in her urine. They suspected a UTI, but since she was given antibiotics in the ER, they could not pinpoint a specific bacteria in the coming days. She was kept on an antibiotic that treats UTI, and because the risk of infection tracking to the blood and brain in newborns is so high, the infectious disease doctors did further testing. Her blood sample did grow a culture, but it was a common skin bacteria, and the doctors thought the sample might have been contaminated by her skin. She was put on another antibiotic for a staff infection. At this point, she was also on fluids, an oxygen machine, cardiac monitors, and had a tube down her throat that went into her stomach.

<div>The doctors tried another spinal tap to rule out meningitis, as this is another big concern with newborns her age. Unfortunately, the second attempt was also unsuccessful. They did scans of her brain in the meantime and thankfully found no fluid pockets or signs of seizures. At this point, she was responding well to the antibiotics, but they didn’t know whether to keep her on for 14 days or a full 21 days, as is the typical treatment for meningitis. We agreed to allow one more shot at the spinal tap to help determine her treatment. This time the doctor was successful. The result did show signs of possible infection, although they were slight. But since there were small markers in her spinal fluid, no one could take the risk, and the team decided to keep her in the hospital for 21 days.

<div>Along the way, we had a lot of incidents at the hospital, including a breast milk mix-up, 2 IVs falling out, MANY failed attempts at placing another IV, intramuscular shots to replace the IV antibiotics, etc. Thankfully a PICC line was placed in her leg as a more permanent solution to get her the meds. This procedure involved Lennon going under general anesthesia. Fortunately, it was very beneficial. She was getting better, her tubes came out, and she was taken off monitors. She also was able to breastfeed again. As her condition improved, it turned into a waiting game to finish out her antibiotics. 
</div>

</div>
<div>This, without a doubt, was the most terrifying and stressful experience of our lives. We slept with her in the hospital every night- Myles even slept on the floor for most of the first week until a spare recliner could be brought into our room. We are so grateful to all the doctors and nurses who went above and beyond for our family. Thank god our Lennon is okay! We are also so thankful to our family and friends who sent messages, meals, care packages, and flowers. Both our families also came to the hospital to keep us company and bring us what we needed. My mom and sister even set up a Thanksgiving buffet in the visitors' room.

<div>On November 29th, after her last dose of antibiotics, we could go home and sleep in our own beds. Lennon gained weight and smiled through it all. 
</div>
<div><br />
</div>
<div>After the nights in the ICU, many doctors and consults, a million tests, IVs, sterile procedures, anesthesia, antibiotics and more- our bill is astronomical. Luckily, we have insurance, but some things were not in network. After the bills from Lennon’s birth two weeks prior to bringing her to the ER, this is very hard to pay on our own. If you want to donate to Lennon’s bills, know that anything helps. Send love and prayers that she continues to be healthy and that no further complications arise in her care! Much love.

International Funeral Cost

On June 1st, Los Angeles County Fire Captain Arnie Sandoval was one of the victims of a horrific workplace shooting at Fire Station 81 in Agua Dulce, California. Arnie’s Engineer was fatally shot and Arnie was left fighting for his life. Arnie was airlifted to the local hospital where he has undergone multiple surgeries. Arnie currently remains in critical, but stable, condition. Arnie is facing a long, arduous physical and emotional road to recovery.<br /> <br />Arnie is an avid outdoorsman, an entertaining storyteller, and a friend to all. He is an outgoing, well respected, and devoted Fire Captain. Arnie worked for the Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department as a Deputy before switching careers to the Fire Department. Arnie has been honorably serving and protecting the citizens of Los Angeles County for over 30 years. <br /> <br />Prayers for Arnie’s recovery and all of those affected by this horrible tragedy are greatly appreciated.<br /><br />This is the only fundraiser approved by the Sandoval family at this time.

On June 1st  La County Fire Engineer Tory Carlon tragically lost his life at fire station 81 in Aqua Dulce. He leaves behind his wife, Heidi, and three young daughters. Everyone who knew Tory, loved him. He was an extremely dedicated father and husband who brought a sense of calm to everyone. He absolutely loved being a firefighter and to serving others. On the morning of February 2nd, our brother Mike Dussinger lost his wife Elizabeth Dussinger in a tragic car accident in Mexico.  Elizabeth was a passenger in the early morning accident that also claimed the lives of 3 other people.  She leaves behind her husband Mike and their 3 year old daughter Denali, 13 year old daughter Miranda, and 16 year old son Hector. She was a loving mother and wife and will be greatly missed.<br /><br />Mike is a LACoFD paramedic at station 30 in Cerritos and one of the best guys on the job. For those of you that don’t know Mike he is a great co worker, mentor, friend, and enjoyable to be around inside and outside of work. He is a great family man and loves his kids very much. He is a joy to be around and needs as much support as we can give him. <br /><br />We are here to support Mike in these tough times. He is faced with raising his 3 year old daughter Denali as well as helping his 2 step children on his own. A couple weeks ago Shirley had surgery to repair a detached retina in her right eye. Two days ago, complications in the eye caused her to go back into emergency surgery. She'll be laid up for the next couple weeks. Her recovery requires her to lay face down the majority of the time. The complication was scary. The recovery is hard.<br /><br />This incident has been scary physically, but it is also scary financially as medical bills are piling up. Everyone who knows Shirley knows how giving she is. We have all benefited from her coaching, friendship, and/or presence. Please send her loving and healing thoughts, and if you're able to put in a few dollars, too, that's great. <br /><br />We love you, Shirley. Get better soon.

Ashley has been diagnosed with Thyroid Papillary Carcinoma. She has a very large 5 cm nodule pushing on her throat making it hard to swallow. On January 20th she is having complete removal of her thyroid followed by a lymph node cleaning  to lower her chances of a reoccurrence.  We are raising money to help  Ashley's financial hardship of medical expenses not covered by insurance which are now adding up after another procedure today and biopsies  and for her loss of income while during recovery as she is a massage therapist and has no other income. Ashley's Thyroid Cancer Surgery

Baby BAM  McWarrior battles the big “C”

Life expectancy is 2-5 years and paralysis comes much sooner.<br /><br /><strong>Why does it happen? </strong><br /><br />We are still at the infancy of understanding this disease and there <strong>has not</strong> been any definitive cause. Can some point to the game of football with claims of cause, sure. But reality is, all you will be doing is grasping for an answer. <br />An answer that will never come. <br />I know my brother, I know he is a fighter and know he will bite his lip and fight! <br />As he sits up in the doctors chair, he asked <strong>“How do I fight it?”</strong><br />That is where the nightmare takes hold. Because there is even less answers to this question than the one of cause. <br />As an athlete you want a game plan, as a firemen you want a protocol, as a human you want hope! The majority of patients bankrupt their families with the costs, and an even larger number simply can’t afford the cost to <strong>stay alive</strong>, so they don’t. As long as I’ve known David it was easy to see the kind of person he is. He is the kind, respectful, and would do anything he could to help someone. He is the type of person that would give someone the shirt off his back if they were in need. If you’ve met him then, I don’t need to tell you that. If you haven’t, you can easily see his character as soon as you meet him. Our days as partners at McCormick Ambulance we always talked about working for our dream department, Los Angeles County Fire. Over the years we have kept each other motivated in our pursuit to get hired. Even when it seemed like the odds were stacked against us we would remind one another to keep pushing through. Fast forward about 8 years and we finally get the privilege to wear the bear! David finally pushed through the fire academy and started his first spot at fire station 8! Unfortunately, nothing good ever comes easy.<br /><br />Shortly after he started probation he tried to tough out some pain like most of us would do. Finally, he was convinced to go to the doctor and was told he has cancer. The cancer has spread to both his lungs, next to his diaphragm and next to his stomach. He is currently undergoing chemo therapy and has 3 more rounds to go. We all know that the guys and gals take care of each other because we are one big fire family! Any little bit helps and is greatly appreciated. I know David has and still would do anything to help someone in need. It’s our turn to help our brother out in his time of need!

Help David Castellanos Kick Cancer’s Ass!

Tim Finn-our beloved friend, brother firefighter, dad, rockstar, etc., suffered a stroke on February 24th. Tim is currently still in ICU and has no movement in his right arm and limited movement in his right leg. The family is requesting no visitors at this time, but wants everyone to know how grateful Tim is for all of the outpouring concern and support for him and his family. <br /><br />The fire department brothers and sisters that have worked around Tim know what a great soul he is. He is as genuine as it gets. Tim has an inspiring and comforting bedside manner (even at 3am) caring for strangers as a paramedic for well over two decades. Tim is the guy that will work for you when nobody else can,  give you the shirt off of his back, and give you his last dime without a second thought. Tim always puts others first and would never ask for help.<br /><br />That's where we come in to assist in his time of need! Tim faces a very long road to recovery. He has three children; Mackenzie, Audrey, and Bella. He will hopefully be transferred to a rehabilitation facility (long term care and therapy) soon when his vital signs stabilize. <br /><br />Tim will be in a desperate financial situation in the near future and the last thing we want him to do is focus on paying bills. I will personally see to it that all donations go directly to help his recovery, well being, and care for his children if needed. My name is DUSTIN SKRIVER, I have had the  privilege of knowing Nick and his family for 11 years. He was one of my first brothers in the fire service. We went through the Fire Suppression Aid Academy together, earning our badges for Los Angeles County Fire Department, as well as both becoming father’s in the same year. <br />     Nick was unexpectedly taken  from us far too soon. Due to this unseen event, Hunter (Nick’s  son) and his family would greatly appreciate any donations to help with the cost of living arrangements, food, and childcare for Hunter.<br />    Our main focus right now is to keep Hunter comfortable during this painful time. I hope we can all band together for our brother Nick and his family.<br />   Nick loved being a fireman, he loved the  comraderey and brotherhood of the fire service. He will begin three rounds of chemotherapy in the very near future and will need some help.  Anthony has worked for LA County Fire Department for 28 years and after 9-11 he took a leave of absence and enlisted to serve his country! Anthony spent 13 months deployed in Iraq during "Operation Iraqi Freedom". Our brother needs to focus on kicking cancer's ass and we are focused on helping him financially through this battle. Anthony has always been the guy to "get it done" anytime, anyplace and for anybody. Please consider giving a little to help our brother in need. Thank you!
