<div>The year is 1543. Somewhere between the Japanese Island of Tanegashima and the unknown seas, a Portuguese ship sets sail to return home with new goods from Japan. Two feuding countries. An enslavement. And a long six month journey ahead. Two young girls find each other through the thick of the political chaos. Kira Yamamoto, a frail Japanese girl, has been stripped away from her family and forced into isolation on the Portuguese ship. Through a childish adventure, the bright-eyed youthful Portuguese, Maria Peixoto, stumbles upon Kira’s isolated room. Tensions arise when the girls reveal why they are on the voyage, causing them to divert their friendship.

Get ANDY to the Denver Fringe Festival

<div>For the first time in a very long time a group of UNCSA Drama students will be taking a play to the <em>largest</em> play festival in the world: <em>Edinburgh Fringe Festival</em>. We have been offered to perform at the Bedlam Theatre, in the heart of the festival, for 12 nights. The theatre is a converted neo-gothic church that has participated in the Fringe since 1980. Since 1937 its been run by students at the University of Edinburgh, who we hope to make a strong connection with so that UNCSA Drama can perform at the festival for many more summers to come.

<div>Our company is called <em>What Time Is It? Productions</em> and is presently made up of Darah Barenholtz, Julian Rees, Grace Woosley, and Aidan Roche (me). Around a year ago, I wrote a play called "<em>Why Did I Crush My Balls? And Other Tales From The Generation of Too Much</em>" (see below for a full description of the show), it's a dark comedy that points at and calls into question the bankruptcy of intimacy and nuance we so casually experience in our day to day lives. And that is the play we four will be taking to Fringe.

<div>For those of you who are unfamiliar, the Edinburgh Fringe Festival (as mentioned) is the largest play festival in the world (and the third biggest globally ticketed event in the world, beaten only by The Olympics and The World Cup), it is the ultimate hub for new and weird<em> </em>theatre; <em>anyone</em> can perform <em>anything</em> at the festival... so long as you can find a venue that will put it up. The benefits of going to the festival are boundless; many careers (of both actors and playwrights) have been jump started through the Fringe, there are new plays happening <em>literally</em> 24/7, and the attendees range from global tourists to top industry professionals and stars.

<div>Presently, UNCSA has little to no connections to the Fringe, so it seems like a no-brainer as to why it would be advantageous for the school's students to get their feet in the festival's doors. Its been a personal dream of mine since my freshman year of high school to go the festival, and when I wrote "<em>Why Did I Crush My Balls?...</em>" last year, I immediately knew:<em> </em>this was the one. This was the one that was weird enough to get people's attention at such a huge festival. So, with the encouragement of many mentors and friends, I began the application process in October. Five months later and we officially have a contract with the Bedlam; however, because it is such a huge event and because we have such a prime time slot (9:30pm), it is a rather expensive journey for a few college students.

<div>We are asking for $5,000 USD mainly for the venue fee. During the more popular time slots in the festival fees for the venues get much more expensive, and since we have been offered such a sought after slot, the fee sits at around $4,500 USD. The rest of the money will be distributed amongst the company to help with air fare. While there are obviously other expenses (housing and the like), we are hoping to cover the venue fee first, as payment happens in 3 installments. The first of which is mid April.

<div>Imagine if John Leguizamo’s “Freak” and Steve McQueen’s “Shame” had a baby. That baby would be titled “Why Did I Crush My Balls? And Other Tales From The Generation of Too Much.” The play starts off as a one man, gory stand-up act that pokes fun at what we do and do not deem socially acceptable in a culture that is constantly balancing both radical acceptance and scathing exclusivity. But as the night goes on, blood gets lost, and GUY (our protagonist) tries progressively harder to convince the audience that his knack for crushing his nuts is not as outlandish as it might appear (acting out scenes of his life, from his first time all the way to his most recent relationship), it becomes clear that the gimpish situation he finds himself in is a Trojan horse for a much larger cultural dilemma. When the postmodern world we live in allows us to scratch every itch we have… when do those itches become more? When do they become things that invade our lives and impede our well being? And while internet culture spreads a new gospel of rejecting masculinity, do we still practice what we preach behind closed doors? With scalpel precision, clownish humor, and the chaos of a firecracker the play examines the cognitive dissonance between our holistic selves and our sexual selves within an era of mainstream media telling us to do one thing, while the open web fully encourages another. Ultimately the story wraps itself into a castrated cautionary tale about what it means to learn all the wrong lessons from the world of too much.

UNCSA goes to Edinburgh Fringe

<div>Friends! Kevin Bohl, our friend and favorite Brooklyn Inn bartender, has experienced a terrible medical emergency and needs a hand from our community. On May 30th he broke his leg while working behind the bar and will need at least 6 weeks off his feet to recover. This is a devastating financial hardship, and what little savings he had will not cover his living expenses during his recovery. Please consider donating here to help him pay for rent, bills and necessities during his convalescence. There are no guarantees that after his leg has healed he will immediately be able to go back to work full-time, so we are trying to set him up for a couple of months. Kevin Bohl's Broken Leg Fund

<div>Hi, my name is Rob Clarke. I am a former member of parliament and RCMP member, having worked with aboriginal communities and a band member of Muskeg Lake First nations. Today, September 4th, a tragic event occurred in which ten individuals were murdered and 15 injured. This is a sad and shocking event Mourning will be a challenging process for all. As a result, the costs are astronomical, from funeral costs to hospital and family expenses to long-term rehab and counseling. Many community members and families will need assistance. Funerals and counseling  assist victims families

<p>On August 9, our dear friend and collaborator Peter Schmitz, was in a horrific car accident. The vehicle hit the driver's side of Peter's car; emergency responders had to use the jaws of life to free him from the wreckage. It's not hyperbole to say he was lucky to survive the impact.<br /><br /> <br /><br />He sustained serious injuries, including a fractured sternum and two cervical vertebrae. After a few days in the trauma ward, he was moved to a rehab facility to continue treatment and recovery. He was released on Saturday the 21st, to continue healing at home. His doctors think it could be upwards of 6-8 weeks before he can return to normal activities.<br /><br />Many of you reading this have been personally touched by Peter's unparalleled generosity, as a teacher, artist, collaborator, or friend. He needs our help now, as he faces the challenging road ahead of him to a full recovery. Along the way he will be met with significant medical bills, the cost of replacing his car, lost wages and the costs of ongoing physical therapy.<br /><br />We aim to raise $20,000 in this campaign. While not the entire amount he will need, we are hopeful this will at least make it possible for him to pay for the care he needs, replace his car, and sustain him until he is able to work again.<br /><br />Many hands make light work. Any amount you can give will help Peter get back on his feet to continue making and sharing his beautiful work with the world. Please be as generous as you are able. Hello! <br /><br />The Foundations Early Learning Center, Poplar St. staff has been hit hard by the pandemic. The center is closed and many of the teachers were laid off. A few of those who weren't laid off are working part time at the center on 7th St., but not all have been able to secure work. Originally from Ohio, she earned her BFA in Film from UNCSA, specializing in Cinematography. Since moving to NY, she has also trained as a Steadicam Operator (SOA).  Her work can currently be seen in festivals around the world. Her short film Engaged (DoP) has recently screened at over 20 film festivals, including ‘Outfest’ and ‘Hollyshorts’. Her Steadicam work can be seen in the upcoming feature film “Black Bear” starring Aubrey Plaza, Christopher Abbot, and Sarah Gadon, directed by Lawrence Michael Levine.<br /><br /><strong>HANNAH MYERS (Producer/Mal) </strong><br /><br />Hannah Myers is an Actor-Director, bred in the South and based in New York City. She has worked closely on new play development with Soho Rep., The Bushwick Starr, Atlantic Theater Company, SITI Company, SPACE on Ryder Farm, EST, Lincoln Center, Sprout Works, and Gibney Dance Center. Most recently, she performed in a dance adaptation of Cowboy Mouth with Huddled Spaces, produced by Gibney Dance and appeared on FBI (CBS) Recent Assistant Director of Twelfth Night at The Old American Can Factory, she is a co-founder of DUMB Theatre Company and a Telluride Film Festival Student Symposium Alumni. She holds a BFA in Drama from The University of North Carolina School of the Arts as well as independent studies with Kristin Linklater and Bob Krakower. This fall, Hannah led the cast of Échappé, a narrative contemporary dance film. If you would still like to donate, please send an email to [email redacted].<br /><br />Thank you! <br /><br />-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------<br /><br />We are raising money to produce the play <strong>Bent by Martin Sherman at Triskelion Arts in NYC starring Wil Bethmann*, Joshua Popa*, Michael Calciano, Conor Hamill*, Pascal Portney and Steve Coulter*. </strong><br /><br /><strong>Produced and directed by Emma Coulter</strong> with <strong>co-producers Alex Bodine and Kira Geiger</strong> this tragic love story set in Nazi Germany, follows the journey of Max (Wil Bethmann), a young gay man from Berlin who learns to accept himself and to love in the face of horrific and impossible odds. <br /><br /><strong>One</strong> of the most <strong>significant</strong> plays of its time, <strong>Bent</strong> helped shed light on the widely untold history of the persecution of homosexuals during the Holocaust. <strong>The significance of Bent is more important than ever considering the recent resurgence of neo-facist extremism around the world. </strong><br /><br /><strong>Most</strong> of the current cast and creative team presented a version of the play in 2015 as part of UNCSA’s “<strong>Keys to the Kingdom</strong>.” One of the <strong>primary objectives </strong>of “Keys to the Kingdom” is to empower UNCSA alumni to become generative producing artists. Now, we want to bring it back to life fully realized following its successful run in NC. <br /><br /><strong>We</strong> are working hard to honor this story by making it as competitive as possible in such a saturated market. Written by and starring Emily DeForest, "Hi, Mom" is a short that follows a girl in New York City attempting to find her footing while juggling love, art, friendship, and family.
