2025 Wildfire Relief Fund

I am fortunate to have been able to enjoy sports my entire life as an unchallenged athlete. <div>Team members respond to calls for help 24/7. Search and Rescue services are provided at no cost. The team primarily operates in the steep, unforgiving terrain of the San Gabriel mountains and responds in all weathers, from extreme heat to blizzards. Much of the work - navigating steep, loose slopes; managing helicopter insertions and extractions and handling exposure - is inherently dangerous and the team manages risk through rigorous training and disciplined teamwork.

<div>I've had the privilege of serving as a SMSR volunteer since 2010 and have seen the tremendous impact of the team's work many times. This giving season I am fundraising to support the team, which operates thanks to the generosity of regular people who support the team through their donations.

<div><strong>How Your Donations Have Impact</strong>

<div>Every year the team needs community support, primarily to help replenish equipment and supplies that are used in the line of duty. Funds donated to the team are used for a range of needs, typically including:
</div>
<div><br />
</div>
<ul>
<li><strong>Medical supplies.</strong> Team members are first responders who care for and stabilize subjects with medical problems and/or traumatic injuries to enable safe extraction from the wilderness environment to a higher level of care. Medical supplies required include bandages, dressings, Coban, splints, slings, cold packs, heat packs and medical gloves.
</li>
<li><strong>Outerwear. </strong>While team members are required to buy most of their mandatory personal gear themselves (uniform, insulating layers, sleeping bag, winter hardware like crampons and ice axes), the team provides outer layers - e.g. hard shell jackets - for foul weather. Most SAR activity occurs off maintained trails, often thrashing through spiny, spiky chaparral and steep, rocky ground that takes a heavy toll on team clothing.
</li>
<li><strong>Communications equipment. </strong>Mobile phones do not work reliably in the mountains and radios are essential for communications between field teams, the Command Post and air support. Radio batteries need replacing and radio antennae and radio units all take a beating. The radio units are particularly expensive: a APX digital multi-band radio costs nearly $10,000 and a rechargeable battery is $150.
</li>
<li><strong>Technical hardware &amp; ropes.</strong> Ropes and webbing get abraded on the terrain and carabiners, pulleys, rope grabs and ascenders all get worn and occasionally lost on operations.
</li>

This Memorial Day: Support the Navy SEAL Foundation

<div>Janie Erickson, our dear friend and family member, had brain surgery on September 10th, 2024 to remove a large cavernous malformation on her brain stem. 
</div>
<div>Over a year later, Janie still remains on a ventilator and she still has a feeding tube. Although she has made good progress, she is still fighting hard to get off the ventilator. Janie initially was in St Luke's ICU in Boise for 15 days, then transferred to Vibra Critical Care Hospital in Boise to work on weaning off the ventilator and to continue with physical and occupational therapy. While there, Janie battled pneumonia, edema, infections, and fevers. Her husband, Jade, was by her side 24 hours a day. Son Jett, Janie's mom Lois, and her childhood friend Tammy all stayed in Boise to help. Tammy and Janie were able to communicate using sign language that they learned together as young girls, and this was a lifeline for Janie to be able to express herself. Janie was at Vibra Hospital until March 31, 2025. She was then transported via ambulance to Cascades at Riverwalk in Midvale, Utah where she is currently staying. It has been a very long and hard chapter for this sweet family. They are all tireless in their efforts to help Janie with her recovery. Jade is now back to work at the City of Sun Valley and commutes to Utah on the weekends. Lois spends each week with Janie and drives back to Twin Falls for a weekend when she can. Jett visits from California whenever he can. There are so many wonderful friends, neighbors and co-workers who are quietly and steadfastly keeping the fires burning for the Ericksons. This would not be possible without you! The Ericksons feel bottomless gratitude to all of you wonderful, kind souls who have helped them with their struggles to carry on each day. Janie still has a long road ahead, but she is determined to return to their home in Bellevue someday. She is very determined, courageous and brave, as are that strong family who have not left her side!

<div>The SVRFD Fireman’s Ball began in the 1970’s as a fundraiser to support our volunteers. Our silent auction has become the highlight of our Ball, thanks to generous donations. The Stanley EMS Volunteers are not funded by local city or state funds. We are solely operated by donations. The proceeds of the Ball are split 50/50 between the SVRFD and the Stanley Ambulance Volunteers. Both entities use these proceeds for much needed equipment, miscellaneous gear and training.

<div>The SVRFD &amp; Stanley Ambulance Volunteers are the Sawtooth Valley’s only local fire department &amp; ambulance service. The closest town is 65 miles from our very rural community. Our volunteer EMS services are the first to respond to any medical calls, car accidents, vehicles in the river, wildland fires, &amp; structure fires. For those of you who can’t attend this year’s event, we appreciate your past support, and we thank you in advance for your support.

These selfless individuals exemplified the true spirit of compassion and courage, and risked their lives daily to provide assistance and relief to those in dire need.

<div>On April 1, the team was hit by an IDF strike on their way back from a food delivery mission. These heroes paid the ultimate price for their service to humanity, leaving behind grieving families who must cope with the loss of their loved ones while struggling with financial burdens. This collective effort is in addition to WCK’s contributions to the families and aims to alleviate some of the financial hardships their families may face as they navigate life without their beloved family members. <div>Many residents of the Wood River Valley, Idaho are familiar with Chip Deffe, owner of Sun Summit South. Whether through skiing, biking, or his volunteer efforts at Galena Lodge's Grinder mountain bike race, Chip has made a mark. But have you met his daughter, Chloe?

<div>Chloe is a resilient young woman who discovered her passion for horses at the age of seven through her involvement with 4-H in Hailey, Idaho, and never looked back. She was a dedicated member of the Wood River High School Rodeo team and achieved the title of regional pole bending champion in 2022. Recently, Chloe took on a new challenge at a Wyoming horse ranch to further develop her skills and plan her future. At just 20 years old, Chloe seemed to have the world at her feet... until last Sunday, when a tragic accident left her with a broken femur, broken pelvis, and dislocated hip after her horse rolled over on her.

<div>Jake Nikolaisons is a beloved son, brother, teammate, classmate, fraternity brother, best friend and so much more to so many. With his genuine smile, happy-go-lucky demeanor, and always positive outlook he’s given to all that crosses his path a sense of acceptance, joy, and calmness. Jake has a way of smoothing over any situation in life, adding an energetic outlook, and creating camaraderie amongst those around him. From some of his closest friends, it has been said that he’s loyal, supportive, has a great sense of humor, always knows what to say in any situation, puts others before himself, he’s loving, athletic, and so much more…

<div>Jake’s family, friends and community had a huge scare on Monday, April 1st and it wasn’t an April Fool’s joke. Jake at the young age of 19 had a cardiac arrest in his sleep, was struggling with his breathing, and was rescued by his close friends and roommates taking prompt action in their dorm room. The campus security and then the paramedics were able to resuscitate Jake and get his heart moving again, and then had to go through the resuscitation action a second time while Jake was transported to the hospital. He was immediately placed into ICU with a partially collapsed lung and medically put into a coma. He thankfully awoke from the coma 36 hours later but proceeded to have yet another cardiac arrest. Some may not call it lucky, but at least this time he was hooked-up to enough machines where the cardiologist was able to determine that the cause is from Long QT Syndrome, an altered DNA disorder. <div>Jake is now getting a defibrillator implanted and will be medicated with beta-blockers to mitigate this situation from occurring again. The fear of this happening without a roommate, family member or friend there to witness and help Jake is daunting, but the defibrillator will be there to eliminate another traumatic event.

<div>As a parent to one of Jake’s friends, I’ve had the honor of getting to know Jake and his loving family. Without a doubt I can say that they’ve raised an utmost outstanding young man. Not only has he been thoughtful when he’s been over to my home; helping with cleaning up, clearing any mess he and my son may have created, but he’s been sensitive and respectful to how I, as a parent, have felt about situations. Always making sure I’m comfortable with what he and my son were about to do and then following through with honesty and respect. Jake is one of the good ones and there are so many out there that feel the same way about him. The love and admiration towards Jake show with the pouring in of friends and loved ones into the hospital hallways; with the love and positive thoughts through the internet over email, Facebook, snaps and texts; and spiritually through the strong prayers and positive thoughts. All of it has been overwhelmingly wonderful.

<div>Jake is attending BSU for a business major. One day Jake hopes to run a restaurant/bar. If you know Jake, we can already see “Jake’s Place” and it will be just like Cheers, where everybody knows your name. Why is that? Because that is who Jake is. He lights up a room with his infectious smile and loving personality; he is friendly and outgoing and is not afraid to meet new people and to invite them into his world. Jake is active in his community whether at home with his parents or at college; and has so much to offer as he continues his path in life.

Any and all contributions will be used for the accumulating Medical Bills and continued care. ICU is estimated at about $30,000 per day. We do not know yet the extent of how this condition is going to change his life and how long the road to recovery will be. Many friends and community members have asked “What can I do?”. We have started this fund as a place to help provide some immediate financial comfort for their family, and to ease anxiety as they take the next steps. Please know that Jake and his parents will be forever grateful. Any amount is helpful and is hugely appreciated. These donations will contribute to brightening the light at the end of the tunnel for Jake and his parents. This tunnel is still very long, as there are enormous medical hurdles to overcome but they are cautiously optimistic. The amount asked may or may not change, depending on the hospital recovery time.

His infectious smile not only lights up the room but also has a way of uplifting everyone around him. It's with a heavy heart that I share some difficult news. Ryan's father's battle with cancer has taken a challenging turn, as it unfortunately resurfaced last Sunday and is now deemed untreatable with a short-term life horizon.

<div>The Moore family has been fervent supporters of the University of Washington football team for over 40 years, hardly missing a game. Their passion and dedication to the team is truly remarkable. During these challenging times, Ryan confided that his family's goal is to make one final cherished memory together by attending the Pac-12 championship game in Las Vegas, cheering on their beloved Udub team.
