Join Nate Nasvik’s Battle against Cancer!
Support the Nasvik Family: Over the past 6 weeks, the discovery of cancer and the journey through it are impacting Nate and his family; every area of their lives has changed, as I am sure you can well imagine.
From Jon:
Nate came into the kitchen in the morning, holding a wad of used Kleenex, and opened the trash drawer next to me. ‘I just coughed up some blood. Is that normal?” I saw a small, dark, purplish-red spot on the gathered tissue. “That doesn’t look right. You should check it out.” That night he came back with results of an X-ray that showed a “large mass.”
Suddenly, he took a hard turn into a world of medical dominance and is now being well-cared for by the staff at The Huntsman in Salt Lake City, 350 miles from home.
To date, we are six weeks in and counting. In that time, there has been blood work, several radiology scans, two biopsy operations, two back surgeries in an effort to save his ability to walk again, and his chemo treatment began Sunday.
For the past three+ weeks, post two surgeries and rehabilitation, Nate has been recovering from back surgery, rehabilitating, and lying still in hospital beds or reclining chairs, where sleep has been interrupted at least every two hours. He has learned to navigate with a walker or wheelchair, eat without appetite, rest without feeling tired, and endure constant discomfort through long days of almost nothing to do. There will be months of this unexpected lifestyle, in an uneasy place to exist, but he would be lost without it.
On Sunday, Mother’s Day, Nate started his aggressive chemo treatment. His regimen will consist of 5 inpatient days of 6 hours+ per day of chemo treatment, followed by 2 weeks of recuperation. He will have four rounds of this journey, all while navigating eating while not hungry, healing of the wound from the surgery on his back, gaining strength so that he can get up and walk, and any/all side effects from all of the chemotherapy.
Throughout this journey, Nate has not complained once! Nate has an unusually kind soul and doesn’t waste his time with negativity. He is bright, articulate, thoughtful, and helpful. A good patient. A patient patient. Nate’s caregivers have remarked about how he is a very nice young man. We are, as always, so proud of him and so sorry that he is tasked with this horrible disease.
As he undergoes this life-altering journey, the financial burden of medical expenses and lost income for Nate and his family adds an additional layer of stress. Therefore, our initial goal is to raise $25,000.
