Help us help Mexico

$13,328 of $15,000 goal

On September 8, 2017 thousands of people in Mexico experienced the most powerful earthquake in a century. Few days later a second earthquake hit Mexico again. It is estimated that around 3 million people have been affected. Stories have emerged of those in Oaxaca who lost everything and are now sleeping on the streets.

Through Latin Stories Australia (a registered non-for-profit in Australia) we have created the fund ‘Help us Help Mexico’ to provide people living in Australia with an opportunity to donate much needed funds towards disaster relief aid.

The funds collected will be allocated to local community organisations in Oaxaca as we believe they are best placed to provide this support. Our family is from Oaxaca, so they will assist us in ensuring the funds turn into food, water, clothing and building materials. We will report back to you and the Australian government on our annual report on where and how the funds were spent.

UPDATE 11/10/2017
We have been talking with different local organisations and people living/helping in some of the affected areas. While some communities are receiving food, water, medical supplies and some temporary housing (tents); there are other people that are not so lucky.

The government has approved some relief programs in regard to construction (under certain circumstances). Unfortunately, this assistance will take years and a large percentage of people who lost everything won't be able to access it.

Therefore, we have decided that our help needs to go towards projects with medium to long term assistance and focus on those towns and people which are most vulnerable. We also want to respect the local customs and traditions of the local Indigenous groups.

We are working with a number of the local organisations and we will keep you updated with the projects we will be supporting. Each of the possible organisations we intend on partnering with aim to provide and equivalent of AUD$550 - 650 to families in need.

All donations can be made anonymous.

Thanks for your support, Your generosity is very appreciate it.

Here it goes! The second outcome of our "help us help Mexico" campaign:
Lidio has been a baker for over 20 years. His aunty taught him and later he taught other members of his family. They have been baking together as a family. They even bake cakes! His oven was destroyed on the September earthquake, so he didn’t bake during the last 6 months. Now thanks to all of you he recovered his main source of income (the other person in the photo is Raul, one of the people helping building the ovens). #fuerzamexico #oaxaca #traditions #income #unamanoparaoaxaca

Dear all,

Another outcome of the fundraising campaign will be the construction of a communitary centre. We thought that during the inauguration of the centre would be very heartwarming for the local people to read supportive messages.

We are so happy to share with you the first outcome of our "help us help Mexico" campaign.
Francisca is from Espinal, Juchitan Oaxaca. She is a baker and her specialty are the “quesadillas de arroz”. Unfortunately, she lost her oven on the 7th of September earthquake. But, that didn’t stop her; she was renting or borrowing ovens to be able to feed her family. Now, thanks to all who believed on us we could help Francisca to build her oven. Special thanks to Una mano para Oaxaca for making this possible. You are transforming the lives of people from Oaxaca, Mexico #fuerzamexico #istmo #traditions

Dear All,

We had been eagerly waiting for the paperwork and evidence of the legality of the grassroots organisation In Oaxaca that our board chose for its grassroots work and knowledge of the area, as well as for their record on delivering the promised traditional brick ovens to the affected families.

In the meantime we registered Latin Stories Australia Inc. as a fundraiser (and yesterday we got the notification of being registered under the number FR- 000014669) as the department of Consumers Affairs Victoria has particular requirements for Australian not for profits when sending more than 10,000 overseas.

Now we can transfer the money to the organisation "Una mano para Oaxaca" (One helping hand for Oaxaca )( https://www.facebook.com/manoparaoaxaca/) they are a local organisation which has been working since the earthquake to re-activate the local economy by rebuilding so far (50) traditional brick ovens (which the area is known for), and working on several well-being programs.

We will keep you posted on how they will be using the money in the coming months to best help this very vulnerable community.

We are incredibly lucky to have your support to provide a helping hand to those who need it the most back in Mexico.

We can’t wait to show you what we were able to achieve with your support .
