Feed our southwestern PA federal families in need.

$37,105 of $100,000 goal

As the partial government shutdown continues, 18,570 federal workers in our 11 county service area aren’t receiving a paycheck — a paycheck that they need to support themselves and their families. And without this paycheck, they may not be able to make ends meet and as time goes on, the need will continue to grow. We are hopeful that this will all end soon but in the meantime…

What do families in southwestern PA do next?

Not knowing where to go or what to do can be scary and we hope that we can be there for all our neighbors at this time.

In order to serve the additional needs of families who haven’t previously received assistance from the food bank or our partners, we are looking to YOU to help fund distributions to support federal families.

This is a big need, but YOU can make a difference for southwestern PA federal families in need.

As you know, agreement has been reached to temporarily suspend the government shutdown. Government workers will go back to work knowing that for three weeks they can once again count on receiving pay for their work. When back pay will be received and missed insurance payments will be sorted out is yet to be determined.

As workers and their families begin to dig out from bills, we know they will need our continued support. Greater Pittsburgh Community Food Bank is committed to being a neighbor our neighbors can count on.

All currently scheduled distributions will continue as planned and special supports for federal employees will remain in place for one full month following the official reopening of the government.

We remain deeply concerned and are closely monitoring negotiations to permanently reopen the government.

Will funding for SNAP (food stamps) in March be included in the agreement? What about contract employees who have missed up to 10% of their annual pay and who are ineligible for back pay? What happens if an agreement isn’t reached before February 15?

Many important questions remain unanswered. The Food Bank, thanks to YOU, will be ready to respond.

The generosity of our community continues! THANK YOU!

My update today is to share with everyone the stories of the folks you are helping. While the Food Bank would normally be closed in observance of Martin Luther King Day, staff and volunteers were on-site to pack food and provide a special food distribution to people being impacted by the government shutdown. And we want to share with you what families told us.
