Hello everyone,
My name is Sarah Cameron.
I am 17 years old and I live here in Chicago.
My mom is a amazing Rotarian, and she is my inspiration for doing this project.
I want to support immigrant children that have been separated from their families in detention centers.
I want to deliver a SUITCASE filled with toys, blankets, electronics, child friendly toiletries, clothing, character posters, arts and crafts kits, a backpack, and school supplies to 402 children.
CASE FACTS
I found 402 children that are located within 300 miles of Chicago.
The zero tolerance policy by the Trump administration is tearing families apart, and traumatizing children.
There are 2,400 children in detention centers countrywide.
If we exceed our initial funding goal, we will be expanding our program out beyond the midwest.
IDENTIFIED NEEDS
The detention facilities are sparse, cold, and frientening places for a child to live in.
They have NO TOYS, NO CLOTHES, NO PAJAMAS, NO WARM BLANKETS, nothing really.
This is traumatic and WE MUST TAKE ACTION TO HELP THEM!!!!
My Plan of action:
PHASE ONE: I will pack each child A BRIGHTLY COLORED WHEELIE SUITCASE with TOYS, child friendly toiletries, character blankets and bedding (Princess and Super Hero Blankets), Electronics (IPOD preloaded with itunes credit), spanish language Books, arts and crafts supplies, Clothing & Pajamas, shoes, character posters for the walls, a back pack filled to the brim with school supplies, child friendly snacks (goldfish), and we are making cards and letters to let them know WE CARE.
BUDGET:
Each suit case will cost $150.00 with enough supplies packed inside for 30 days.
WHAT I WILL DO TO SUSTAIN THE PROGRAM
The timeline estimate is a 12-24 months to get the children reunited with their parents and through the legal system. After delivering the initial filled suitcases, we will follow up in 2 weeks to see if they need replenishments.
If funding allows, we will move onto phase two.
PHASE TWO:
Provide TWO PREPAID CELL PHONES to the child and their Mom and Dad to communicate.
Establish a Community room at the detention center with supplies: Game systems, games, brightly colored rugs.
Replenish supplies: child friendly toiletries, snacks, age appropriate toys, and more clothing and shoes.
Establish play grounds in detention facilities: working with the established play ground building charity KABOOM, we will work to coordinate the installation of basic playground equipment across the country.
