On July 21, my brother, Bo Stephán, lost his home to a fire. In a single night, decades of memories, personal belongings, and his irreplaceable feathered companion, a Harley Quinn Macaw named Doody-Bird, were gone.

Now Bo is doing what people do after disaster hits. He’s cleaning up, meeting with insurance adjusters, talking to fire investigators, and trying to make sense of what’s left. He’s out of paid time off and missing work. The bills keep coming.
