Fort Worth Christian School is a special place–we have the most incredible students and families and our teachers truly love and care for each of them. It is often said that it’s the teachers who really make our school the very best because teaching our students is their calling, their ministry, their gifting. Now, we have an opportunity to help care for one of our own teachers and her family as they are faced with a medical emergency and all of the financial burdens that come along with it.
On the morning of December 16th, Mrs. Kristin Nelson (our beloved Middle School 7th Grade English teacher/CLC coordinator) rushed her husband Steve to urgent care. A scan would reveal a mass in his kidney. They were able to get into an excellent surgeon and his kidney was removed on January 6th. The surgery was successful and Mr. Nelson began his road to recovery; they knew that it could be a long road ahead but they were hopeful and grateful nonetheless.
Then on January 16th at 1:00 am, Mr. Nelson woke up with a terrible headache. By 1:15 am, he was unconscious and in an ambulance on the way to Medical City Fort Worth. Upon arrival, Mr. Nelson was diagnosed as having had a stroke–two brain bleeds that would need brain surgery. He had surgery later that day, and they were able to stop the bleeding. However, since that day he remained in Neuro ICU until late Thursday, February 6th when he was transferred to an acute care facility.
Mr. Nelson has been able to open his eyes at times, but he has remained mostly unresponsive and has not exhibited any controlled or purposeful movement. We are praying that even now God is healing his brain and his body in miraculous ways.
The Nelson family is much like many of our families–they love Jesus, they love each other, they work hard, they care for family and friends and their community. Mr. Nelson has worked as an occupational therapist throughout his career, and Mrs. Nelson has been a teacher, counselor, and head of school. They have been married for 31 years and are the parents of three sons–Addison, Keaton, and Cameron (one of our own wonderful 9th grade students). Because Mr. Nelson worked as an occupational therapist on contract, they are now functioning without his income which provided the majority of their family’s budget. And, like most people in their 50s, they were healthy and therefore not prepared for such a catastrophic medical emergency.
The Nelson family has not asked for anything except for your prayers, but we are hoping that we can all pitch in to alleviate some of the financial burdens that they are facing right now–their normal living expenses and their growing medical bills.
Please continue to pray for the Nelson family–pray for God to work miraculously and for them to feel His presence, His peace, and His love more than ever. Thank you for being such a loving, generous community–it is such a gift to have each other! Blessings to each one of you.
“2 Share each other’s burdens, and in this way obey the law of Christ… 9 So let’s not get tired of doing what is good. At just the right time we will reap a harvest of blessing if we don’t give up. 10 Therefore, whenever we have the opportunity, we should do good to everyone—especially to those in the family of faith.” Galatians 6:2,9-10
“9 Don’t just pretend to love others. Really love them. Hate what is wrong. Hold tightly to what is good. 10 Love each other with genuine affection,[e] and take delight in honoring each other. 11 Never be lazy, but work hard and serve the Lord enthusiastically.[f] 12 Rejoice in our confident hope. Be patient in trouble, and keep on praying. 13 When God’s people are in need, be ready to help them. Always be eager to practice hospitality.” Romans 12:9-12
