Lana’s diagnosis came as a complete surprise. Her risk factors were normal, there is no family history of breast cancer, and she has given birth to and breastfed three children. Despite being diagnosed with DCIS (Stage 0), the mass is neither small nor easily excisable. Additionally, the calculated risk of recurrence in the other breast is 25%.
Because of this, her treatment plan will involve a double mastectomy with reconstruction, giving her the best chance of avoiding chemotherapy and radiation (to be confirmed after pathology results from surgery). Over the next six months, Lana will undergo two surgeries and will be out of work for at least 10 weeks for surgical recovery. On top of that, she will have numerous doctor’s appointments and require supportive therapies such as physical therapy, occupational therapy, and psychological support—resulting in significant downtime.
To help ease the financial burden, we have set a fundraising goal of $35,000. These funds will go toward covering her copays and deductible, as well as essential expenses not covered by insurance, including household help, specialized recovery garments, meals, childcare, and more.
