Look closely at the cover photo above. It captures our entire reality in a single frame. You see our sweet 1-year-old, Emelia, reaching out for her mother's hand, her little arm wrapped in bandages from her latest round of chemotherapy. And in the background, you see her big brother, 7-year-old Eli—watching from the corner of the hospital room.
They should be playing. They should be at home. Instead, they are living in a hospital room, facing a world that has been turned upside down twice in a matter of weeks.
We are organizing this emergency fund for Alexa and her two children as they face a catastrophic medical diagnosis and a devastating family tragedy simultaneously.
The Medical Crisis: Emelia’s Fight Against AML Baby Emelia has been diagnosed with Acute Myeloid Leukemia (AML). She has already endured several punishing rounds of chemotherapy and is now preparing for a critical, life-saving bone marrow transplant.
The road to a transplant is grueling. As you can see, Emelia is a fighter, but the treatment requires 24/7 care, isolation to protect her immune system, and months of hospital stays.
The Family Tragedy: Losing Patrick While Alexa has been by her daughter's side fighting this medical battle, the unthinkable happened. Patrick (31), Alexa’s husband and the children’s devoted father, died by suicide.
For years Patrick struggled with mental health issues. He was the primary breadwinner for the family. His passing has left Alexa not only grieving the loss of her best friend and partner but also facing total financial uncertainty.
The Situation Now: A Single Mom Fighting Alone Alexa is now a single mother of two, unable to work while she acts as Emelia’s full-time nurse and caregiver. The logistics of the next year are overwhelming:
Immediate Relocation: Alexa, Eli, and Emelia must relocate immediately to temporary housing closer to the hospital for the bone marrow transplant.
Separation & Support: Because Eli cannot stay at the hospital during Emelia's transplant, family members are pitching in to help care for him nearby, but the family is constantly being pulled in different directions.
Returning Home: Once Emelia’s medical team gives the "all clear," the family plans to relocate back to the Chicagoland area to be surrounded by the family support system where Alexa and Patrick are from.
Why We Need $150,000 We have set a goal of $150,000 to ensure Alexa can focus on saving her daughter’s life without the terrifying fear of homelessness or financial ruin. This fund is not just for bills; it is to rebuild a life that has been shattered.
Your donations will go directly toward:
Survival & Housing: Rent, moving expenses, housing, food, and utilities, etc while Alexa is unable to work during the transplant recovery (which can take up to a year or longer).
Patrick’s Memorial: Covering the dignity of cremation and memorial services.
Relocation Costs: Moving expenses to get near the hospital now, and the eventual move back to Chicago to secure a safe home near family.
The Children’s Future: Any funds remaining after stabilizing their housing and getting this young family a fresh start will be set aside for Eli and Emelia’s education—securing their future.
