Help Camille Keep Her Home: Disabled, Betrayed, and Fighting
Donation protected
My name is Trista, and I’m fighting for my intellectually disabled aunt Camille, who loves math problems, watching Heartland, and whose whole world has been taken from her when she needs it most.
Just before Thanksgiving 2022, a group of people, purporting to act as Camille’s guardians, shielded Camille from her family and deprived her of assets my grandmother intended for her. They then dumped her in a house with very few provisions. Horrified, I immediately started the process to become her legal guardian, which I was awarded in March 2023. But soon after, I discovered something heartbreaking: someone we trusted—family—had allegedly diverted funds meant for Camille shortly after my grandmother was showing signs of dementia. Funds that my beloved grandmother worked until she was 92 to save.
Even worse, they gave away Camille’s beloved home of 30 years.
The Home That Means Everything
If you met Camille, you’d understand immediately why this matters so much. This isn’t just about having any house —this is her sanctuary, her independence, and her security. It’s where:
- We grew up with adjoining rooms with matching furniture, sharing magazines, and listening to music through our connecting doors.
- We spent hours helping Mama in the kitchen, begging her to teach us her secret recipes.
- Neighbors who know and love Camille look out for her, making independent living possible despite her disability.
- She feels safe, surrounded by memories of her parents.
Our mama chose this house specifically for its walkable neighborhood, knowing these familiar surroundings would allow Camille to maintain her independence with minimal support. This wasn't just a house—it was Mama's final gift to ensure Camille's future.
Then Cancer Struck
As if losing her financial security and home weren't enough, in late 2024, Camille was diagnosed with ocular melanoma—a rare and aggressive eye cancer. Despite her incredible bravery through treatment, she's now blind in one eye and faces anxious three-month scans to monitor for spread.
Instead of recovering in the comfort of familiar surroundings, watching her favorite shows, and working on the math problems that bring her joy, Camille now lives with the constant fear of homelessness hanging over her head.
The Legal Battle Ahead
I never imagined having to create this fundraiser. After securing guardianship and uncovering the extent of what happened, I've already exhausted much of my own savings fighting for Camille's rights. My attorneys believe we have a strong case to recover her assets, but they have been transparent about the high cost of pursuing this through to trial.
This isn't just about money. This is about justice for someone who cannot fully advocate for herself. This is about standing up and saying that exploiting vulnerable people will not be tolerated.
How Your Donation Helps
Every contribution, regardless of size, brings us closer to:
- Funding the complex legal battle to recover Camille's home and trust assets. Legal representation is $600/hr. with an average of 50 hours of work a month.
- Ensuring Camille has stability during her ongoing cancer monitoring.
- Sending a powerful message that those who exploit vulnerable individuals will be held accountable.
Any funds raised beyond our legal costs will go directly to supporting Camille's ongoing care and rebuilding the safety net that’s been lost.
Your support today isn't just a donation—it's a lifeline for a woman who has already overcome so much and deserves to face her health challenges in the home she loves.
Please share this campaign with everyone you know. Together, we can right this wrong and restore justice for Camille when she needs it most.
Thank you for standing with us in this fight.
With gratitude and hope,
