Help Riley and Her Dog Find Safety

A few months ago, I was driving home from work when I saw a young woman holding a sign that said “Jesus.” I pulled over and asked what she was doing.

That’s when I met Riley.

She told me she had just arrived in California and was living on the streets with her dog. I immediately thought how dangerous it must be for a young woman to be out there alone. I couldn’t just drive away, so I put her up in a hotel for a few nights to give her a safe place to rest.

But that was only a short-term solution.

Since then, I’ve helped Riley a few times—driving her to places she needed to go, listening to her story, and seeing firsthand how tough her situation is. Through it all, she’s been respectful, kind, and hopeful for a better future.

Here’s the thing: Riley wants to work. Back in her home state, she worked as a dog sitter and dog walker—and she has five-star reviews so she can get work. She loves animals, and she’s passionate about caring for them. But without a car, she can’t get to clients. And without transportation, she can’t earn a living.

Riley is not using drugs or alcohol. But my fear is, the longer she stays on the streets, the more danger she’s in.

A car wouldn’t just give Riley a safe place to sleep at night—it would also give her the ability to start working again, doing what she loves, and give her a path toward stability and independence.
