This campaign aims to buy reusable masks for open-market vendors in Haiti who cannot afford to stay home as they don't earn salaries: a day that they don't work is a day that they don't eat. As Covid-19 raises havoc around the world, it is particularly destroying already fragile third-world countries. Despite the serious safety measures being taken such as the complete closure of all borders, the pandemic is spreading like wildfire, from 234 cases May 12 to 865 by May 22nd, of only those who can afford to get tested. As a result, medical facilities are turning down infected patients because they don't have the gear necessary to tend to them and cannot risk the contamination of other patients with different illnesses and weakened immune systems.
Open market vendors in Haiti make barely enough to feed their families and are unable to protect themselves as well as they should. Their job requires that they interact with hundreds of people every day, which entails hundreds of money exchanges with no intermittent use of hand-sanitizer. This makes it extremely probable that they get infected by Covid-19, thus endangering themselves and their families, without the possibility of being treated at a hospital.
The entire world is suffering an economic crisis and it is near impossible to raise enough money to afford medical equipment for hospitals in Haiti to tend to cases of Covid-19 but as the saying goes "Evite miyò pase mande padon!", meaning that it is better to prevent than cure. The purchase and distribution of masks ( which will be followed by the purchase and distribution of other preventative gear such as gloves, hand sanitizer, etc) aims to prevent the spread of Covid-19 in open markets to the highest degree of possibility.
All profits will then contribute to the purchase, shipping, and distribution of reusable masks from Alibaba as well as the 2.9 percent payment-processing fee on each donation and the 30 cents for each donation that this site charges.
