Our hearts are shattered. Our ancestral childhood home in St. Elizabeth, Jamaica — the area declared “ground zero” after Category 5 Hurricane Melissa — has been severely damaged.

This house was more than a structure; it was the foundation of our family, built by our grandparents, and it is the sacred resting place where they are both buried in the backyard. The loss is the erasure of our collective history.

The devastation is extensive: The hurricane tore the roof away, compromised the walls, and caused parts of the foundation to give way, leaving the home unsafe and unlivable. Two family cars were also destroyed, including a brand‑new vehicle purchased with a JMD 2 million (about USD $13,000) family investment.

Our mother, Sharon, is a dedicated Social Worker with the Ministry of Labour and Social Security in Santa Cruz. She continues to serve as essential personnel — assessing damage, coordinating shelter, and administering grants to other victims of the disaster.

The Hard Truth: While Sharon is helping her community rebuild, she is being left out. She is ineligible for the very government disaster grants she is administering due to complex regulations. Since the ancestral home also had no insurance, this rebuild relies entirely on private support.
