If you are new to Velesha’s story, this nightmare began on December 25, 2021. Velesha and her children fled their home in Sindelfingen, Germany, seeking asylum from the severe domestic abuse and violence inflicted by her husband, Ivan Beauchamps.

The abuse was both physical and psychological. For months, Ivan locked the doors to every room in the house—except Velesha’s separate bedroom and the children’s rooms—frequently restricting their access to basic human needs and technology.

A System Stacked Against a Survivor:

After fleeing to a domestic violence safehouse, Velesha attempted to fly back to her home country (the U.S., where she is a citizen). She couldn't. Months prior, her husband had stolen the children’s passports and refused to return them.

Velesha immediately contacted the German police and the United States Consulate for emergency passports, only to discover her abuser had placed a travel ban on her and the children. Despite Velesha being the daily, primary caregiver—and despite her living in a protected safehouse to escape his violence—a German judge initially ruled in her husband's favor.
