Join Us in the Fight Against Hunger!
We are The Hunger Champions—a group of students from the University of North Texas, driven by a shared passion to make a difference in the lives of those facing food insecurities.
What exactly is food insecurity? As defined by U.S. Department of Health and Human Services, it is a household-level economic and social condition of limited or uncertain access to adequate food (Food Insecurity - Healthy People 2030 | odphp.health.gov, n.d.).
Have you ever faced uncertainty about when or where you would eat your next meal? In 2023 there were 47.4 million people, in the United States alone, that were living in homes that sometimes or often did not have enough food to eat (Food Security in the U.S. - Key Statistics & Graphics | Economic Research Service, n.d.).
Every day, millions of individuals struggle to find their next meal. This reality motivates us to act and support The Hunger Project—a campaign close to our hearts. Together, we aim to shine a light on food insecurity and rally support to help those in need.
With your generosity, we can make a tangible impact. Every dollar raised will contribute to providing meals for individuals and families who urgently need them. The fight against hunger is a battle we cannot win alone. Your support can change lives and give hope to those who need it most. But long-lasting change has to be sustainable. We don't just want to feed people for a day - we want them to feed themselves for life. "Hunger is not just about food" (The Hunger Project, 2024). There are so many causes of hunger, and with your help, The Hunger Project will assist in facilitating education for the world's undernourished. Your donations will also help to fund education targeting HIV/AIDS prevention and malnutrition, agricultural programs, and creating and maintaining clean water resources.
"I vividly remember the events of 1985 in Ethiopia, when many people suffered from hunger and starvation due to famine. A prolonged lack of rain caused drought, particularly in the northern part of Ethiopia. This drought led to the death of plants and animals, and many people starved to death. I distinctly recall one rainy afternoon when I stood in front of my house and witnessed a flood carrying a dead body, pushing it around before finally leaving it on the ground.
"That year, it became a daily occurrence to see malnourished people in the streets of our small town, which was truly heartbreaking. Due to a shortage of food supplies, local government officials from the small town where I lived had to travel to the northern region known as Gojjam to purchase food. Gojjam is well-known for producing corn and teff, a grain used to make flour.
"I also remember local officials distributing very limited amounts of food to ensure that everyone received at least a little to survive. Once the famine in Ethiopia became world news, it attracted the attention of American artists. They organized a fundraising effort called "We Are the World" to help Ethiopia and Sudan."
