LEGAL EXPENSES FUND FOR THE SCV JUNETEENTH ACTIVISTS
On Juneteenth (June 19, 2020) several local Santa Clarita BLM youth activists participated in an art protest. They used ages 4+ non-toxic washable paint, the kind used in kindergartens, to write "BLM" on a street during non traffic hours well after midnight. Before they could finish, local LA County Sheriff's deputies arrived, confiscated the washable paint and took the kids' information. Since that night, the sheriffs have begun to search out, arrest, jail and charge two of these youth activists with felonies. There may be outstanding arrest warrants against the other youths. The first activist, a minor, was arrested, jailed and charged with a felony on July 31 (41 days after the art protest). The second, who had just turned 18, was arrested, jailed and charged with a felony on Friday, August 29 (71 days after the art protest). Neither youth was asked to turn themselves in. Both were cuffed and arrested at their homes, with the minor while she was home alone with a friend.
Incredibly, the arrests came soon after each activist had spoken publicly at an SCV City Council meeting in favor of Black Lives Matter and against racism by local elected city officials. Can these arrests have come as retaliation for the kids' outspokenness?
The Juneteenth Activists' trials are set for September and October and we're reaching out to the community in hopes that we can raise funds for the legal defense of the activists involved. All proceeds from this fundraiser will go to protect the rights of these youth activists from the overreaching charges.
