Hurricane Melissa has devastated Jamaica in a way the country has rarely experienced.
Entire regions are without power, running water, or basic essentials — and many families have been displaced from the only place they have ever called home.
Our family’s district of Thornton, Saint Elizabeth, and the neighboring community of Borewood were hit especially hard.
This is a small, close-knit community where neighbors care for one another, where elders are protected, and where land and family homes carry generations of history.
But today, many of these same families cannot help themselves or each other.
Roofs are gone. Foundations have shifted. Walls have collapsed.
Homes that stood for decades crumbled in a matter of hours.
We're starting this fundraiser to help three families who urgently need support — families who simply cannot rebuild on their own.
THE FAMILIES WE’RE HELPING:
1. The Morgan Family
• The grandfather is blind and unable to care for himself.
• The family is currently living in the emergency shelter at the primary school.
• The granddaughter gave birth in the shelter just three weeks ago.
• Their entire home was reduced to rubble during the storm.
They have nowhere to bring the new baby home to.
2. Aunt Lilly
• Her roof was completely torn off during the hurricane.
• Everything inside her home was destroyed and must be thrown away.
• She cannot stay in her house due to the level of damage.
She lost the place she worked her entire life to build.
3. Miss Jess
• Her roof also blew off during the hurricane.
• The only room she can safely stay in is her bathroom — the rest of her home is unsafe.
• Her property is severely damaged.
She is elderly, alone, and unable to rebuild without help.
WHY THIS MATTERS
In places like rural Jamaica, land and homes are generational.
Most families cannot simply “move” or find an apartment to rent.
Their homes represent:
- decades of sacrifice
- community roots
- inheritance for children and grandchildren
- identity, stability, and belonging
When a home is lost here, it is not just a structure. It's a lifetime erased.
