Family and Friends Rally for New Lenox Toddler
Two-year-old Lucas Nagel of New Lenox loves cars, trucks, trains and construction equipment. He enjoys playing outside and loves swimming. His favorite movies are “Cars” and “Toy Story.”
Lucas was diagnosed with High Risk Acute Lymphoblastic Leukemia in April, 2020. He is being treated at the Loyola University Medical Center.
Friends and family have organized an online fundraiser to help the Nagel family.
“Lucas is our first grandson and he’s a very special little boy,” said Pam Nagel, of Oak Forest. “He’s always smiling and my husband, Mike, and I just adore him and our three month old granddaughter, Leah.”
Nagel’s son, Eric, is a Union 597 pipefitter and their daughter-in-law, Samantha, works part-time so that she can oversee Lucas's medical care and appointments.
Lucas was recently hospitalized with a blood infection that caused him to go into septic shock.
“Because Lucas is neutropenic, we don’t take him anywhere in public and we don’t have people over to our house since any type of virus or bacteria could put him back in the hospital,” Samantha Nagel said.
“We want to do all that we can to help Samantha and Eric get through this,” said Joe Copeland, Samantha’s father. “This is why we’re asking family, friends and the community for prayers and donations to help with their expenses,” he added.
“Eric is our only child and to witness him going through this with his first born is heartbreaking,” Pam Nagel said. “Sam and Eric are dealing with so much and sometimes have to take off work for Lucas’s hospital stays. We all want to help them as much as we can.”
While plans for an in-person benefit are on hold because of the pandemic, online monetary contributions are being accepted at https://www.gofundme.com/manage/hope-for-lucas-nagel-family.
“Lucas is a fun little boy, always laughing and smiling,” Pam Nagel said, adding, “He loves anything with wheels, Buzz Light Year, Mickey Mouse, and laughs when his Papa Mike does his Donald Duck voice.”
“We’ve had a number of people ask what they can do to help,” Pam Nagel said. “The best way is to let people know about the online fundraiser.”
Joe Copeland added, “We’re hoping that people will share the link and that people will reach out to help this young family that is very dear to all of our hearts.”
