Caring by Card is a love letter to the Forgotten: We uplift the lives of the elderly, sick, and disabled one card at a time.
Caring by Card honors my mother, Shaunna Bennett. Her name, her tenderness, her resilience. Throughout her life, my mother sent handwritten cards and letters to friends and family so they would feel cherished, loved, and seen. With every card sent through Caring by Card, her legacy lives on.
I started Caring by Card six years ago with a simple goal: to make sure nursing home residents across America feel remembered and loved. Caring by Card is a love letter to the forgotten. In 2020, during the height of COVID, I watched news coverage of nursing home residents dying alone, no visitors allowed, no hugs, no human touch. My own mother had already passed, after six years in three nursing homes. She had been diagnosed with Alzheimer’s at just 57. If she’d been alive during the lock-downs, I wouldn’t have been allowed to hug her. That thought shattered me.
I knew I had to do something. I began asking friends, schools, and strangers online to make handmade cards for isolated nursing home residents. The response was overwhelming. People across all 50 states wrote back. They wanted to help. Since then, Caring by Card’s volunteers have sent nearly 20,000 handwritten cards to residents in almost 200 nursing homes in every state in the U.S. We’ve also organized youth choirs and holiday concerts in NYC nursing homes, and hosted corporate card-making events with companies including Target, Papyrus, Citibank, JP Morgan, Ally Bank, MGM Studios, and Johnson and Johnson. Our volunteers include Girl Scouts, schools, and everyday Americans who want to connect across generations. We don’t send the cards ourselves. Our volunteers do. Caring by Card exists to facilitate connection. We match volunteers with nursing homes, coordinate card campaigns and programs, and make sure every card reaches a real person who needs it.
And now have some exciting news! Caring by Card is now officially a 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization! We’ve been working toward this for years and becoming a nonprofit allows us to expand our reach, steward donations responsibly, and serve even more nursing home residents. We hope that you will consider supporting our mission through making a donation.
Where Your Donation Goes: People often ask, “Where does my money go?” Each month, our small staff and dedicated volunteers do the following:
- Research and reach out to nursing homes across the country
- Communicate with program directors by phone and email
- Organize nursing homes by region and resident population and match volunteers with participating facilities
- Coordinate card deliveries and confirm distribution
- Gather photos and signed releases
- Share stories to keep the movement alive
- Organize in‑person musical events and card‑making campaigns and programs
It takes an average of 8 hours per nursing home per month to see a program through from start to finish and our small team works with 3-10 nursing homes a month. Your donation supports both infrastructure and program support , because without the infrastructure, our work simply can’t happen.
What Your Gift Makes Possible:
Nonprofit filing and legal costs, postage for cards that Caring by Card sends, supporting the build-out of our new website, social media outreach to connect with new volunteers, nursing home outreach to find new nursing homes to sponsor each month, coordinating musical concerts in nursing homes and covering our first year of start‑up and operating costs. Your donations also help give our staff a modest stipend and support in‑person card-making events. Every dollar helps ensure that no one is forgotten.
Donations are tax‑deductible.
Thank you for supporting Caring by Card and for sharing this campaign. And thank you for helping us remind elderly, sick, and disabled people who live in nursing homes that they matter. Everyone deserves to feel remembered.
With love and gratitude, Rachel & the Caring by Card Team
