FRIENDS Gallery, opened in 2024 as a new community gallery space in East End/2nd ward of Houston, TX with a focus on BIPOC, Trans and Queer local artists from the neighborhood, surrounding areas, and nationally. We are interested in art as a place of community, culture, political education, and a way to shift and improve the conditions of oppressed people. We support artists and communities that are anti-imperialist, decolonial, and believe in the labor rights of all people. We are currently a staff of one, and a community artist volunteer collective. As we expand, our goal is to grow into a cooperative model.
We are fundraising to cover the costs of rent and laboring as an almost entirely volunteer-run operation. Friends is by and for the community, trying to hold onto space for QTBIPOC artists and cultural organizers under an increasingly hostile environment.
Our name reflects the idea of friends coming together to build something powerful. Through art, we create space for political education, decolonial practices, and collective transformation.
Come meet us, experience the space, and celebrate this new beginning. Whether you’re an artist, organizer, or someone curious about what we’re building—we’d love to see you there.
