<div>FRIENDS Gallery, opened in 2024 as a new community gallery space in East End/2nd ward of Houston, TX with a focus on BIPOC, Trans and Queer local artists from the neighborhood, surrounding areas, and nationally. We are interested in art as a place of community, culture, political education, and a way to shift and improve the conditions of oppressed people. We support artists and communities that are anti-imperialist, decolonial, and believe in the labor rights of all people. We are currently a staff of one, and a community artist volunteer collective. As we expand, our goal is to grow into a cooperative model.

This funding will help procure critical medical equipment, medicine, and support healthcare staff, ultimately improving the overall quality of healthcare available to Sudanese citizens.

<p>UPDATE: The fundraising goal has been reached and the family is currently searching for safe and stable housing near their daughter.  <br />We'll share more soon! <br /><br />--------------------------<br /><br /><br />Since the COVID19 pandemic began thousands of families struggling to make ends meet across Houston have been threatened with eviction for nonpayment of rent or late payment of rent.  As concerned parents to baby Parker, Christine and Phillip did everything they could to avoid getting evicted - they completed the CDC declaration, applied for rent relief and their landlord even got 7k in public funds to help pay off the family’s debt only to have their landlord return the rent relief and evict them. 
</p>

<p>On the morning of August 27th,  Phillip and 18-month-old Parker had just finished breakfast and were getting ready for the day, when without notice or warning  their front door was opened by to 9 constables and 6 apartment employees.<br /><br />Phillip showed his CDC declaration to the officers and when told his family was being evicted for nonpayment he tried to explain how <br />$7000 was just paid to the apartment complex.  No one would listen. He pleaded with the apartment manager and constables to wait 30 minutes for his wife to get home as it was impossible to do anything while holding his crying daughter but was told to "get out of the way."<br /><br />The constables proceed to drag the family's dog outside and tie him to a post, while a dozen people began tossing everything his family has ever owned into bags filled with trash, and the items that were too big or heavy were broken in front of them so that it would be easier to<br />remove. Only one trash bag of clothing was salvageable. Everything else was either broken, ransacked, stolen by other tenants in the complex, or ruined by the rain.<br /><br />Once evicted, Christine and Phillip were given an ultimatum by CPS. Due to what CPS described as an unsafe area of Houston, they had to either let Parker leave them and stay with someone else in New York or a case would be opened and Parker would be put in foster care.  Parker was sent to New York and Christine and Phillip remained homeless and forced to sleep in their car.<br /><br /><br />This fundraiser is being run with the hopes of getting the family stably housed and reunited. Reunite the Tilley Family After Unfair Eviction

Our beloved Lionel Jude Clifton of Houston, Texas, passed away on April 22, 2021 at Texas Children’s Hospital. Though his four years with us were heartbreakingly short, his playfulness, joy and light will live on with us, forever.<br /><br />To honor his memory and legacy we want to encourage his friends and loved ones to contribute to this initiative in Lionel’s name. This fundraiser is organized by Lionel's extended family with the approval and support of Joanna.<br /><br />While our plans are still in development, we intend to use any money to make a charitable donation in Lionel’s name to a worthy cause. Our goal is to raise enough money to sponsor a scholarship, endowment or similar initiative that can spread Lionel’s light to as many people in need as possible. Some of the initiatives that we are currently pursuing which reflect Lionel’s interests include:<br /><br />- Scholarships for students sharing Lionel’s passion for space exploration<br />- Charitable contribution to children’s healthcare or early childhood education <br />- A named scholarship at Rice University<br /><br />We also want to make one thing clear: all donations to this initiative will be used for a charitable purpose only. No money will be used to alleviate any expenses incurred by Lionel’s family or friends.<br /><br />As we firm up our plans, we will put out more specifics on this website.<br /><br />We hope you will choose to spread the impact Lionel made in your life by making a contribution. And even though Lionel’s time with us was cut short, we hope that this initiative will ensure that his legacy and passion for life will endure. Honoring Lionel Jude Clifton

Dina is a Garifuna migrant mother of 3 girls who has been without electricity and water for 3 weeks. The winter storm in Texas compounded the impact of the hardship her family has been experiencing since her utilities were shut off. Her children are currently staying with a friend so that they can attend virtual school due to lack of access to food, electricity and wifi at home. <br /><br />Dina is in urgent need of support and assistance to pay back rent, find safe housing, and feed her family after having to deal with back-to-back disasters. This fundraiser is in solidarity with an AfroIndigenous mother in Houston in the midst of a crisis that has disproportionally impacted Black and Indigenous communities.<br /><br />Dina's story was featured in a recent NPR story about the impacts of disasters on communities color. This national story doesn't translate to immediate support, but we hope that through the creation and amplification of this fundraiser we're collectively able to support her and her 3 girls. <br /><br />We're working directly with Dina and her support system in the wake of the NPR story and will make sure that she receives all the funds sent her way.
