It’s hard to forget what she said: “War taught me to be the pillar of the house… the foundation and the head of the family.”
This was shared by an anonymous woman in the Voices of Sudan series. It captures the resilience, strength, and heartbreak that so many refugee women experience. When I think about this woman, she could be my friend, my sister, my cousin, or my neighbor.
Since April 2023, conflict in Sudan has displaced over 11 million people, with more than 2 million fleeing the country. The country of Chad now shelters over a million Sudanese refugees.
The EmpowHer Initiative was created to support the Women’s Refugee Commission (WRC) and its mission to protect displaced women and children.
Founded in 1989 and independent since 2014, WRC champions the rights of displaced women, youth, and children. In 2023, it raised $11.6 million—99.2% from donations—and invested nearly $9 million in programs for education, reproductive health, financial aid, and protection for vulnerable groups, including people with disabilities, LGBTQI individuals, and adolescent girls. Partnering with organizations like the Gates and Packard Foundations, WRC improves crisis health responses. Their work remains vital, as 70% of women in emergencies face gender-based violence.
Support the Women’s Refugee Commission through the EmpowHer Initiative, helping displaced women and girls reclaim their futures. Your donation provides safety, education, and vital resources to those affected by crisis. Together, we can uplift and empower every refugee woman and girl. Join us—every contribution creates change and hope for women.
The Women’s Refugee Commission is a safe place created in 1989 by Liv Ullmann, Catherine O’Neill, Susan Forbes Martin, and Susan Alberti. They focus on women, children, and youth.
