Our family is heartbroken. On September 12th, my cousin Katherine’s son, Omar—just 16 years old—was tragically taken from us in a senseless act of violence in Panama.

Omar was full of life, a loving son, brother, nephew, and grandson. He was an excellent student, only a year away from graduating high school, with dreams of building a brighter future for himself and his family. He had so much promise ahead of him, and his loss leaves an unfillable void.

This tragedy is especially devastating because of the journey this family has already endured. After years of hardship in Colombia, Katherine, her sister Angelica, their mother Claudia, and their young children had recently immigrated to Panama in search of safety and opportunity. Like so many immigrant families, they left behind everything familiar to work tirelessly for a chance at a better life. Despite humble beginnings and daily struggles, they remained hopeful—putting family, faith, and love at the center of everything they did.

Now, instead of celebrating Omar’s bright future, Katherine and her family are facing unimaginable grief and the unexpected expenses that come with such a tragedy. Although our family is doing everything possible to provide support, the situation requires more help than we can offer on our own. Omar estaba lleno de vida; era un hijo, hermano, sobrino y nieto cariñoso. Era un estudiante excelente, a solo un año de graduarse de la escuela secundaria, con el sueño de construir un futuro brillante para él y su familia. Tenía un porvenir lleno de promesas, y su pérdida deja un vacío imposible de llenar en nuestras vidas.
