Our daughter's heart stopped beating. At 37 weeks. The long awaited arrival of our very first beloved child. And the wait was over. But it was the worst possible outcome. The doctors frantically searched for a heartbeat. Her life was over before it started. I was induced for two dreaded days of terror and anxiety as I was forced to do what no mother should—give birth to her stillborn child. When those grueling two days were over and she came into the world- unsettling silence filled the hospital room. No cries. Not a sound. All my doubt of being a good parent, and of her being mine were gone. But so was she. The only time I smiled and felt some relief and comfort was when I was leaving the hospital empty handed and was given a box to fill those empty hands. A box full of hope, a box full of not being alone, a box of something to say someone understood. The items in the box were filled of loving and special gifts to help comfort in a time when there is none.
