There's crisis at our southern border. A Crisis of Love. Migrants are fleeing Guatamala, Honduras, El Savador, and other countries due to violence and fear. Our country is not honoring our own laws for asylum seekers.
This administration is separating children from their parents, older kids are caring for babies, and the conditions they are forced to live in are squalid.
I've been despondent as images have come out of Texas. I've donated. Called my elected officials. Shared info on social media. I still feel useless and helpless.
That's why I've decided to take five days off from work/life and go to El Paso with some other fierce female activists to volunteer with a variety of organizations that are helping migrants who have just been released from ICE/CBP custody. They're dropped off at various sites with no food, no money, and sometimes no shoes.
We will help them make travel arrangements to their family in the U.S., get them fed, and help them with any medical issues they might have from their time in detention (many of them are sick, have diarrhea, many of the women have UTIs and yeast infections from not being able to shower). We will run to Costco to buy supplies for the charities when they run low on things like tampons or underwear.
We will hug the asylum seekers. We will tell them that we see them. We will tell them America isn't what they just experienced. We will play with the kids.
We will respond to this crisis with love.
I'm asking you to help me get there. Flights from NY to El Paso are about $600. Lodging and ground transportation will be around $400 - $500. I will cover my own food and incidentals.
Anything above my exact travel costs that I raise will go directly to buying supplies for migrants or giving them $5 or $10 to use on the bus for food during their travel.
Please give what you can. So many of you have said things on social media about how insane this is. How scary it is to see our country devolving so quickly into authoritarianism. You can't make the trek to El Paso to help. I can and I am. Please help me get there and help provide basic needs to these terrified human beings.
I will bear witness to these atrocities. I will share what I learn with you and anyone who will listen.
