Imagine the pressures, anxiety, and stress you are feeling during this crisis. Now imagine being significantly impaired - reliant on equipment, reliant on carers, and being stuck at home 24/7 because you're at very high risk of catching the virus. Many disabled people have had to sacrifice their independence to move back in with family. It's a nightmare.
More than 1 in 5 people are disabled in Britain - that's 22% of the population that, some could argue, have been hit the hardest by COVID-19. We want to reach as many vulnerable people in self isolation as possible.
Our goal is to help unite the disabled community in a shared experience - to help reduce stress and improve wellbeing.
Adaptive yoga is designed to make yoga accessible to more people. Especially those who have injuries, limitations, disabilities or those who are elderly. Adaptive yoga combines gentle movement , meditation, and deep breathing. The efficacy of these interventions to help manage pain and reduce anxiety has been long established.
Adaptive Yoga LIVE has been created by two disabled founders, Miranda McCarthy, CEO of Wavelength VR, and Louise Edwards, Founder of the Non-For-Profit organisation Adaptive Yoga Network . We met just over a year ago at the first adaptive yoga class in the UK. We both have experienced the enormous benefits the practice has given us and we have made it our mission to make more classes available for the people who need it most.
Our live-streaming classes are taught by expert yoga teachers, volunteers, each with more than 500 hours yoga teacher training, both specially trained in adaptive yoga. The online classes include only seated poses so they are suitable for all ages and abilities and anyone sitting at home!
We hope to invest your generous contributions of our first GoFundMe campaign in the following. We are also 100% committed to keeping you in the loop on where we are investing your funds and will update you with our progress.
The first £5000: With your kind donations will be able to guarantee free live-streaming sessions for the rest of 2020. We will be able to cover our company expenses including our webhosting, streaming software, and instructor payments. We would like to spend money on a good CRM tool, marketing during live streaming, and Google Ad Words to ensure we are visible to all online.
People: People are at the heart of this business and we will need support to make this an internationally recognised service. We intend to use your donations to introduce these sessions to groups of elderly and infirmed people in care homes. We will spend money on marketing in order to find volunteers, disabled ambassadors, and international representatives to help raise awareness. Funds will also be used to attract and recruit more yoga teachers.
Charity: We are working with the Non-For-Profit organisation Adaptive Yoga Network. This charity provides financial support for existing yoga teachers to retrain in adaptive yoga and helps fund new classes by donating equipment and supporting other costs. Together we plan to utilize the live streaming to assist in training new yoga instructors interested in adaptive yoga – hopefully providing new employment opportunities. 10% of all funds raised will go to this charity.
The Future: This may have started in response to COVID 19 - but we are thinking long term. We would like to offer tailored classes for specific limitations, incorporate more offers and tools for self-improvement, and create a library of dedicated wellness content. This is just the beginning! Thank you for your kind support.
