My name is Gabriel Plaza-García. I am a speech-language pathologist working in the public schools with children with complex bodies and exceptional communication needs. In the search of making our schools and communities more inclusive, last year, my colleague Dana Arce and I came up with the idea of creating an inclusive event for the community where kids could come have fun and pick a fully adapted toy of their choosing to take home. Hence, our first Adapted Toy Wonderland was born!
Here’s why we need your help. We want to make this a yearly event and we can’t do it without your support!
Why we’re doing it?
Off-the-shelf adapted toys for individuals with access differences are extremely expensive and sometimes cost-prohibitive for the families in the community. To give you an idea, the same toy that you would get from Walmart or Target that would cost you $25, if you buy it adapted from one of the websites available, the price would be triple or quadruple ($75-$100), making it inaccessible.
We are on a mission to adapt 100 toys to give back to the community for FREE!
This fundraising will help us to:
- Buy toys
- Buy the materials and parts for the adaptations
- Buy materials for 3D printed switches
The toys will be fully adapted by high school students, providing opportunities for real-life experiences with adaptations and opportunities to make the world a more inclusive place for people with diverse bodies and needs.
❄️Please consider donating to make this year’s Adapted Toy Wonderland a success! ☃️
