Running for Suicide Prevention Awareness

Tax deductible
I love long distance running. In August, I ran over 50 miles total, and decided I wanted to set the goal for myself to reach 100 running miles in a month... something I don't think I've ever done in the roughly 10 years I've been running on and off. Running is my spiritual happy place. It recharges and refreshes me, and it does so much more for me than just its physical benefits. The psychological impacts of running are so strong that it can even lift the spirits of those with major depressive orders (according to the American College of Sports Medicine ).

September 10 is National Suicide Awareness Day and September is National Suicide Prevention Awareness Month. According to the World Health Organization , nearly 800,000 people take their life each year globally. 2020 has been a particularly hard year, with the COIVD-19 pandemic disrupting our lives for several months now. This year has mentally and emotionally taxed many people, myself included. In August, per Politico, the CDC reported that 1 in 4 young adults (ages 18-24), have contemplated suicide in the past month.

I decided for the month of September, I'd like to donate $1 for every mile I run, to an organization that helps raise awareness for suicide prevention. I've chosen the American Foundation for Suicide Prevention (AFSP), an organization I've supported in the past. For those who'd like to join me in supporting this cause, I've created this GoFundMe page. I've set the total goal at $1,000.

Things will get better, and there is always hope and good things if you know where to look and stick to doing the things that recharge you. And check in on your loved ones and your friends, ask them how they are doing, don't settle for the cliche "I'm fine." *Really* ask them. it makes a difference!
