It’s almost my birthday and I find myself wishing for the impossible: that no child in the USA (no matter where they came from) be trapped in a detention center. So, for my birthday this year, I’m asking you to join me in donating to the Young Center for Immigrant Children’s Rights, a group whose soul purpose is to support and represent children alone in detention centers.
As I write this, I’m watching my healthy daughter sleep in her warm crib, with a full tummy, surrounded by her favorite stuffies. My heart breaks thinking about the innocent children like her alone in immigration custody—scared, eating rotten food, drinking contaminated water, not given medical care, and unable to communicate their suffering to the outside world. No child should have to go through that. Anywhere. Ever. Period.
The Young Center for Immigrant Children’s Rights helps children in this exact situation get the advocacy and support they need to be released and reunited with family. Specifically they:
- Provide legal advocacy and support, ensuring children have representation.
- Advocate for children’s wishes and best interests.
- Fight for children’s right to be with family or facilitate safe placement when needed.
- Keep children safe in and ultimately free from government custody.
I researched several non-profits serving people in detention centers but The Young Center’s mission aligns the most with helping children. I planned to do this fundraiser through Meta but this organization wasn’t an option. Somehow that solidified for me that it’s the right one to support.
Thank you!
