1 July 2026 - Run 1 - Oh Here We Go
Like most military veterans, I was unaware of the metaphorical double edge sword awaiting the impenetrable soldier.
Fort Sill, OK 2011:
I sat in an out processing building with a checklist of off boarding details followed by a neat, orderly packet of documents behind it. A PFC sat before me excited to be finally ETSing. He elaborated on his home country, Germany, and would not shut up about all the sex they have… just to be having it. Every one of his phrases ended with “sergeant” cause his mouth couldnt fold “Sarn’t”. I acted as though he was entertaining me while reading my very first resume out of the army, wondering what was ahead.
All felt right. All felt good. Until all felt questionable. I began an ugly cycle of drowning myself in double arrogant bastards on the daily, eager to feel right. For years this internal destruction was a practice while leaning on my age to recover and build someone else. Hopefully professional, hopefully right.

This month I will push miles for those internal battles that I’ve slowly learned are not my own battles. I will run for all the good and bad memories of my post military career. I will run for the first time I gave in and asked the VA for help. I will run for those who know it’s best to stay quiet and in the shade. I will run for those whose service is corroded with questions and worst of all, guilt.
I assume not many of us expect the wild elusive chase after a successful military career. The stride to be on the right side of history is a daunting task. While no explanation will be sufficient, each breath accompanied by a forward progression is the best feeling. A feeling that is being over shadowed by back pain, ptsd and constant chaos.
Today I run as one of the toughest fuckin diamonds you’ll ever have the pleasure of knowing. My red leg standard spirit will strike the ground and my posture will be correct. Until my bones collapse on my nerves.
I run for military mental health and the ghost battlefield whose smoke has yet to leave the battle ground.
