Greetings to all!
We are writing to you from Ibarra, Ecuador, here for a clinical rotation as occupational therapy students. We have been lucky enough to spend some time getting to know the ‘Ruedas Sin Fronteras’ (Wheels Without Borders) wheelchair basketball team here. The team consists of 20 men who have sustained spinal cord injuries and other disabilities. The team is currently raising funds to order sports wheelchairs from the USA so that they can begin to compete in wheelchair basketball competitions. The catch — the team has to order the chairs from the States, and it costs $3,000 alone just to ship them here to Ecuador. We are hoping to raise this $3,000 by July 1st to assist with expenses. What is occupational therapy, you ask?
Occupational therapy is a rehabilitative profession that works to enable people ranging from babies all the way to older adults to participate in the meaningful activities in their lives. Occupational therapists work with individuals with mental health diagnoses, physical disabilities, and medical conditions in different settings such as hospitals, schools, nursing homes, and the community. Occupational therapists look at the person in a holistic manner so that everyone can live their lives to the fullest.
That’s why we are asking you to donate to this great cause — help provide these players with the equipment necessary to play competitive wheelchair basketball!
