The Cat and Dog Protection Association of Ireland

For several years, I’ve been helping manage a large cat colony in D7. Currently, two volunteers, Bia & Ed, and a few neighbors are focused on trapping the new cats that continue to appear along the lane.

Since December of last year, 15 cats have been trapped so far, including kittens and senior cats. Some are being TNR, kittens and the friendliest ones are being placed into foster care. Others are sick and need an extra care, like Hope, who was spayed years ago but now urgently requires dental treatment.

The cats are full of worms due the conditions they survive, so all of them are being treated for worms and fleas. They are also being spayed/neutered and health-checked.

CDPA has generously been covering all veterinary bills, which continue to increase every rescue.

Yvonne Gallagher passed away peacefully on February 6th, 2026, surrounded by her family at a Hospice in Dublin, Ireland.

As we all know Yvonne Gallagher had many loves, but among the closest to her heart were cats and dogs. Over the years she did her very best to give a home to dogs and cats in need and I know that in her heart she would have liked donations on her death to go to a cats and dogs charity. This is why I am launching this Gofundme.

The Cat and Dog Protection Association of Ireland is a no kill volunteer run charity and uses funds raised to help stray and abandoned cats and dogs through rescue, rehoming, trap-neuter-return. It also helps people struggling financially to access vet services.

It doesn't have to be much, just whatever you would like to offer.

One of our volunteers came across a very sad situation where an elderly, sick man is struggling with approximately 10 very hungry cats in his garden. He is doing his best but with bearly being able to look after himself, it is very difficult for him. The cats urgently need vet care, neutering and ideally a few could be placed in foster care. There's a pretty rough looking male, a heavily pregnant female and a little kitten (there was 2 more but they've disappeared).

Our amazing volunteer already rescued the kitten and we'll be looking for a foster for him.

Help Travis Fight On!

Rescued as a sickly little thing, Travis has already battled through antibiotics twice. His two buddies from the same location didn't make it - they had panleukopenia ... but Travis is a FIGHTER!

Earlier this week, Travis was all set for surgery to remove his sick eye removal and cryptorchid neuter... but things took a scary turn. He had a bad reaction to anaesthesia, had to be intubated, and the vets had to stop the surgery for his safety.

After x-rays we discovered sweet Travis has pneumonia and possibly lungworm. He’s on strong antibiotics now, and we’re hoping to get him back for surgery once he’s recovered and stronger.

We’re appealing for help to cover Travis’s care.

This poor little tortie girl has been fighting a tough battle on the streets, alone and without a home. Blind, with sick eyes causing her constant pain, she's been surviving on her own for far too long. When she was finally rescued, the vets told us that her condition is heartbreaking - her eyes are a source of immense suffering, and she's currently relying on three types of eye drops just to get some small comfort.

But there's hope! With your help, we can give Turtie the gift of no more pain. The eye enucleation surgery will cost 450€, we would also like to test her for FIV and FELV and her fosterer thinks she might need dental care soon too. Right now, she's safe and sound with an incredible fosterer who loves her dearly, snuggling up with fluffy blankets and making biscuits - it's the first time she's known true comfort.

The Cat and Dog Protection Association of Ireland: We rely 100% on donations from our kind hearted followers in the general public. We are all volunteers working together to provide rescue, rehoming and TNR to cats and kittens in Ireland. We get cats and kittens adopted to loving forever homes and help sick and injured animals. We do not have a facility therefore we rely totally on our foster carers in their own homes.

Many of the rescue cats CDPA takes in suffer from dental issues, which can cause pain, infection, and difficulty eating. Sadly, untreated dental problems can severely impact their overall health. But with your help, we can provide these cats with the dental care they desperately need to live happy and healthy lives.

Recently CDPA has had to cover the costs of extensive dental procedures for 5 rescued cats.

These dental procedures involved multiple extractions, cleaning, pain medication, and antibiotics for each cat, costing just over €1,100 for the charity.

We are tackling yet another colony this week, and are running low on funds. So far we have trapped & neutered 9 cats out of 18. Many of the cats in the colony are pregnant. One cat was so small when she gave birth, none of her kittens survived their first night. Little mama is now doing well though after getting help. This colony started as a few cats last year, but left un-neutered the colony has since grown out of hand. Seeing the numbers escalating, a kind person who does their best to feed & provide shelter for the cats that visit their garden, called us, desperate to get them to help, but simply unable to cover the costs of neutering 18 cats alone. We are looking to raise funds to cover the TNR costs for this colony. If you can, please contribute to our ever growing vet bills so that we can continue our TNR / rescue work. We appreciate & utilise every penny. Un-neutered cats can have multiple litters of kittens per year, they continously fight to breed, for food, mark territory & spread disease. Here is a primary example how two cats can turn into fourteen in the blink of an eye. Unfortunately situations like this can get out of hand really quickly and leave people feeling defeated and helpless, especially when the funds aren't there to support such an undertaking. When we got a call about this colony and heard no local rescue is available to help due to many otbers in need, we simply couldn't decline. We really want to help neuter these 14 cats, treat them for parasites and hopefully even place a few in foster care. The costs of such a mission are huge! We are not only talking about the cost of spaying but also medication, parasite treatment, diesel and supplies.

06/02/25 Update! 8 cats trapped, neutered and treated for parasites so far. We are hoping to place 4 in foster care to give them a chance to find loving homes 4 males have been returned.

4 more cats trapped and a surprise kitten

Just when we thought all the cats were neutered, I got a call from their feeder that there's probably 3-5 more cats that need to be trapped. When I went down there at the beginning of the week I just spotted one teenage kitten. I noticed she had a bent tail but quickly set a trap, moved away and had her within a few minutes. When she was checked by the vet, we discovered that her tail was badly injured and completely dead. It was a nasty injure and the tail needed to be completely amputated. There was also a risk that she may not be able to control her bladder as the amputation would have to be done at the very base of her tail. We decided to go ahead and give the surgery a try anyway. We had to give her a chance. This little girl is about 8 months old but she is the size of a 4 months old kitten very malnourished. She was spayed at the same time and now recovering quite well with me. She's also using the littertray which is a huge relief. She is a pretty spicy girl but I don't blame her. She has peace and quite to recover now. Hopefully she'll realise she's safe soon I'll be back down to Louth for any remaining cats.

Recently we found out about a colony of cats at a service station in County Kildare. So far we have have rescued 3 kittens and a young adult cat from this location. They are safe in foster care and getting ready to find their forever homes.

There's approximately 7 cats left to either TNR (Trap Neuter and Return) or place in foster care. We would like to give as many of them a chance to have better lives. Unfortunately, we are limited for resources. We do not have a facility therefore we rely totally on our foster carers in their own homes.

Imagine the horror of seeing your cat being hit by a cat, rushing her to the vet only to realise that you don't have the money to save her?

Katori was the victim of a hit and run that left her barely able to walk, urinate or defecate. Her owner rushed to the vet where they discovered her pelvis was broken in multiple places.

Can you imagine the amount of pain the poor kitty was in?

Her only options was to have a specialist surgery costing over €2000 or be put to sleep. Although Katori could barely walk and had to be brought daily for the vet to help express her bladder - Katori has a strong spirit and her owner couldn't bear the thought of euthanising her when she was fighting to stay alive.

The surgery had to be performed by a specialist orthopaedic surgery to repair her pelvis with bilateral lag screws.

Unfortunately, Katori's owner could not afford the surgery and already borrowed from friends and family to cover the multiple vet visits she needed to stabilise her.

Katori's owner reached out to the Cat and Dog Protection Association and we agreed in the hope that we could fundraise to cover Katori's vet bills.

Across Ireland, kind-hearted people are doing everything they can to care for forgotten stray and feral cats. They feed them daily, watch over them in all weather, and try desperately to stop the cycle of endless litters. But they cannot do it alone.

Right now, we've been asked to help spay and neuter almost 70 cats in Cork and Galway! They are a mix of older cats, young kittens, pregnant, nursing mothers - their carers are completely overwhelmed and we cannot ignore their plea for help.

Their carers are ready to trap them, transport them to the vet, and continue caring for them for years to come. The only thing they’re missing is the funding to stop these numbers from spiralling even further.

Our own resources are now completely exhausted because so many of the cats we’ve already helped this year required extra veterinary care: antibiotics, wound treatment, and additional medical procedures.

It feels overwhelming, but we know it IS possible.

If every person reading this donated €10, we could spay and neuter these cats treat any illness and injuries and prevent thousands of future births and ensuring an increased quality of life for these cats.

Last week, a member of the public contacted CDPA for help with a stray cat he found in Waterford city. The poor cat was limping and we suspected her poor back leg was broken.

She is so friendly we think she definitely belonged to someone and while we search for her owner, we thought it was best to get her seen by a vet asap.

She was examined by our vet, her leg x-rayed and it turns out her poor leg is badly broken in two places. The vet recommended a leg amputation and gave her medication to help manage the pain.

We know from experience that while this is a big surgery, and that she will still go on to have a good quality of life once she recovers. Thankfully, her finder has committed to care for her in the mean time and she is affectionately named 'CookiesnCream'.

While her finder wanted to do the very best to help, they are not not in a position to pay the vet bill. So once again, with hope in our hearts, we are appealing to you for help with the cost of her vet bills. We believe every cat, whether stray or owned, deserves a good life free from pain and we know you do too.

CookiesnCream is scheduled to have her leg amputated today and we are continuing to search for her owner in the mean time so please share this appeal.

We are extremely grateful to Tir na Bhó Vets and Highfield Vets New Ross for helping CDPA with this stray kitty, to Adam from the Furs Things First for transporting her to and from her vet appointment and finally to her finder who chose not to look away and has then her into his home.

Benji is a much-loved family cat that was adopted from LAW as a kitten 8 years ago. He was attacked on the 11th of October by 2 dogs that were with their owners in a deliberate attack. He suffered severe injuries, a fractured sternum and abdominal wall hernia from the pressure of being bitten that caused a tear in his muscle wall that intestines protruded.

Benji has had 2 major surgeries for abdominal wall and hernia repair and another for necrotic tissue debridement and wound closure. Benji is having his wounds managed with tie over bandages and he will need at least 3/4 more bandage changes that are costing 140 euro each time if he needs sedation, his owners have spent over 2500 already. Currently he is being seen daily for check-ups and injectable medications. They are unable to keep affording the vet care he needs so they contacted CDPA for help.

Benji is a fighter even though he has been through so much he is trying his best to keep going. He is the most placid and affectionate ginger cat. Please help fund Benji’s vet care so he can return to the life he had before the deliberate attack.

Some days are more heartbreaking than others. Yesterday was one of them. On Sunday a kind lady contacted us for help with a severely neglected, painfully thin stray cat she came across in Monaghan.

The photos are so shocking and even though the cat is over 90kms from our volunteers we knew we had to set up and today we are full of hope. This boy has arrived at our vet in Carrickmacross where he is being assessed.

After luring him into a cat carer, his finder noticed that his paw and tail are potentially broken. So on top of the open sores, malnourishment and neglect - this boy has been struggling to get around with broken limbs. We don't know how long he's been suffering but we will do everything to make sure it ends today.

With your help, he will;

No longer have to fight for a meal, being pushed away by stronger, healthier cats.

No longer search for warmth and love - this will be guaranteed in foster care.

No longer be in pain - we will treat his wounds, breaks and help build up his immunity once again.

We badly need to fundraise to cover the costs of his rescue as we anticipate that his treatment, medicine, tests, potential x-rays and surgeries, high-quality and nutritious food will cost hundreds of euros.

This boy is so desperate for love, although hesitant we're told he yearns for a safe lap to crawl into and we will do everything in our power to make it happen.

Today we come to you with a heavy heart, and a reluctant plea for help

We need to pay a big vet bill for a specialist surgery for a kitten ‘Blessing’ who we tried to save but her little body was unable to make it.

A few weeks ago, we were contacted by our partner vet in Limerick about a small 3-month-old kitten who was found in a ditch and had difficulty walking. ‘Blessing’ was the sweetest little thing, so full of love and purrs but also in some pain. Her x-rays showed that she had a double hip fracture which was mostly likely caused by being hit by a car.

The treatment for this was a salvage surgery costing over €1,200 and we were understood that her small size and light weight made her an ideal candidate for this surgery.

So full of hope, CDPA agreed to help. We found an incredible local fosterer who smothered Blessing with so much love and affection until it was time for the operation.

When the vets opened her up, they realised she had a right-side inguinal hernia they had to repair first. However, not long before they started fixing this, Blessing stopped breathing. The vet immediately commenced CPR but despite their best efforts – Blessing passed away.

The shock of losing such a vibrant, happy and adorable kitten has left us devastated. Her loss has hit her fosterer hard, and we are all so very sad.

Unfortunately, Blessing's vet bill still needs to be paid so despite this tragic outcome, we are turning to you for help. We always knew we’d need to do a fundraiser but we never imagined it would be this.

Paying off this vet bill means that we chance on a future cat in need.
