Radiating Hope

According to Cancer Research UK 1 in 2 UK people will be diagnosed with cancer in their lifetime (global statistics are similar). Fortunately, for those of us living in the developed world if we are diagnosed with cancer we will have access to the most modern and effective treatment modalities. However, this is not the case for those living in the developing world such as in Africa. Today, cancer is the leading cause of death in Africa, killing more people than HIV/AIDS, malaria, and tuberculosis combined. Radiating Hope is a charity dedicated to addressing the lack of cancer care in Africa with a focus on improving access to Radiotherapy treatment.

As a radiation oncology professional for almost 20 years, I am passionate about supporting the provision of potentially lifesaving radiotherapy to the less fortunate in the developing world. I have thus resolved to conquer climbing Kilimanjaro Africa’s highest mountain and the highest freestanding mountain in the world as a fund raising effort and a symbolic gesture of conquering cancer in Africa.

Cancer is among the leading causes of death worldwide. While more than half of cancer cases occur in developing countries, many patients still have limited or no access to cancer care, particularly radiation therapy. In parts of Africa, for example, there are as few as one radiation machines per 10 million people, compared to the United States where there is one per 100-200,000 people.

Radiating Hope is a nonprofit organization dedicated to improving cancer care around the globe, with a focus in radiation oncology and underserved areas. I am asking for donations to Radiating Hope in support of my first half-marathon, which I will be running later this month.

A few of the many accomplishments of Radiating Hope include:

-Bringing the first HDR brachytherapy unit (machine needed to deliver curative radiation for cervical cancer) to Senegal in 2012

-Facilitating the donation of multiple radiation machines to Honduras and Guatemala

-Working with the Foundation for Cancer Care in Tanzania to acquire and ship a radiation treatment machine to Dar Es Salaam, Tanzania.

I am running the race on November 21st, with one of my best friends, Raman Muhar, who is doing her Radiology residency in Michigan. It is a first half marathon (or run of any kind greater than 5 miles) for both of us and we are actually having a great time with our inter-state training!

HELP US PROVIDE BETTER CANCER CARE IN THE DEVELOPING WORLD

The background: In the USA, patients generally have access to excellent cancer care, and radiation oncologists are not too hard to come by (you may know more than one!). In developing countries, the situation is often quite different. Access to care is limited, and curable cancers are a common cause of morbidity and mortality. In Tanzania, there is only one cancer center that offers radiation therapy to serve the country of 44 million people.


The mission: We are traveling to Tanzania in March 2013 with a small non-profit organization called Radiating Hope. The organization has already procured land in the city of Moshi to set up a cancer center. We are asking for contributions towards the ultimate fundraising goal of $150,000 to place a cancer center with a linear accelerator to serve this area of need, which serves a population of over 11 million people.


What are we doing to earn your support?
First, we plan to hike the highest mountain in Africa, Mt. Kilimanjaro (19,341 ft), over 5 days with a group of ten other radiation oncologists. We will be flying prayer flags at the peak of the mountain to recognize our supporters. The prayer flag can bear any name you wish to assign on it "“ yours, someone close to you, or anyone you know who has been affected by cancer. Next, we will work alongside local physicians in a clinic and participate in a full-day conference (Greater Horn Oncology Symposium) that will help to establish best practices for cancer screening and cancer therapy.



What can you do? We are excited to take part of this effort and would be honored to have your support! Your tax-deductible contribution will go directly towards the cost of building a cancer center that WILL result in better quality of life and lives saved for those in need.

Hi! I am raising money for an incredible organization called Radiating Hope! Radiating Hope is a nonprofit 501(c)(3) organization founded by radiation oncologists and mountain climbers wanting to help cancer patients around the world, our goal is to raise money to provide and update radiation equipment in countries where radiation therapy and cancer care is hard to find, and optimal treatments are sparse. We will create sustainable change as we educate communities, preserve cultural values, and build community relationships. One way we will raise money for the project is through our mountain climbing guide services. Climbers raise tax deductible pledges to purchase a climbing package. The money raised is used to purchase and update radiation equipment for developing countries.

We will be embarking on this adventure next March 2014 to Tanzania to climb Mt. Kilimanjaro. Along the way we will be carrying prayer flags. After the climb, we will be breaking ground on a brand new cancer center in an area where 41 million are without cancer care!

We also raise money through selling Tibetan pray...er flags, which have long represented health, strength and hope. Cancer patients and their families can purchase a prayer flag in the patient's honor and a designated climbing team will carry the flag on their expeditions, flying the flag at the peak.
