Everesting for Black Lives Matter via NAACP

SOMEWHERE TO START
I've been doing a lot of reflecting as of late, as many of us have. I've come to realize that I have somehow gotten by on the perception (<— note my choice of words here) that I have done little to contribute to racial inequality and injustice. That is not to say that whether through action or inaction I haven't—I'm sure I have—but up until recently, it seemed to be enough to feel like I'd done the right thing. I didn't need to say anything or do anything other than support and love the Black and Brown people I already hold dear in my life.
I'm not proud of it, but I realize now that silence makes me part of the problem. Inaction makes me part of the problem. And while my heart may have always been in the right place unless I speak and act on those good intentions I'm not only letting down the people I love but also I'm not working to ensure the same rights, protections, opportunities, and countless other privileges I've thoughtlessly enjoyed as a White man to everyone else in this country.
I've found it difficult to find a place to start. In the end, I realized it's most important to have started so that you can make progress from there. So while I'm taking different actions in my profession as a venture capitalist, I also wanted to use my masochistic love of cycling to help advance racial equality in America.
EVERESTING
So what's Everesting?
"The concept of Everesting is fiendishly simple, yet brutally hard: Pick any hill, anywhere in the world and complete repeats of it in a single activity until you climb 8,848m (29,029ft) – the equivalent height of Mt Everest."
Of the millions of cyclists around the world, globally only 5,175 people have successfully Everested. The current fastest time is just under 8hr of riding—most attempts take between 12-16hrs. It is hard and, frankly, I'm very intimidated.
Given the undertaking, Everesting attempts have become a way in the cycling community to raise funds for charities addressing a wide variety of causes including providing free meals to low-income students, funding research for a cure to multiple sclerosis, and most recently funding coronavirus research and response.
My Everesting attempt will raise money for the NAACP in support of Black Lives Matter and the advancement of racial equality in America.
I set a goal of $29,029, one dollar for every foot I’ll be climbing. To help achieve my goal, I will be matching every dollar up to $2,902.90.
